Dr. Laura is absolutely terrifying

As is the fact that people actually listen to her.

My mother listens to Dr. Laura, and I just heard some guy saying that he saw his thirteen year old daughter making out with a boy, at which point he yelled the boy off his lawn, had a two hour talk with his daughter, and is gonna get his daughter tested for drugs and STDs, and Dr. Laura is telling him he's doing the right thing. What the crap.

I also strongly suspect she is sexist against women, but I don't listen to her enough to confirm this.

Loyal 12-21-2009 04:40 PM

......who the hell is Dr. Laura?

Tev 12-21-2009 04:43 PM

Wait, they were making out on the lawn? Of all the places….man kids are dumb today.

I think the boy got off easy. Also, while jumping straight to illicit substance and STD testing seems a bit of a leap, if I ever have a daughter and she pulls that kind of crap she should at least expect a good two hours of stern talking and a threatening of at least five years of grounding.

A radio version of Dr. Phil. She's been around forever.

Kim 12-21-2009 04:47 PM

True fact. I heard about it on the liberal media.

If your daughter ever has a boyfriend and makes out with him? Really?

Fun fact: If you have a daughter, she is probably going to get a boyfriend, and she will probably make out with him. They might even have sex, as that is a thing people do.

No…..no no no no no. I accept that my daughter will make out with boys. I even accept that it’ll start sometime around 11-13 years of age. I refuse to accept that she’ll be dumb enough to do it on my front lawn, especially while I’m there to see it. I would hope to have raised my daughter better than that. She can get her jollies off with her boyfriend in her room, or the basement, or somewhere not on my damn front lawn.

OH SNAP!

To be fair Tev's daughter will likely be so ugly that he'll never have to deal with this problem

Amake 12-21-2009 05:01 PM

Are you going to tell your daughter beforehand that kissing in public is dumb?

I know I could never figure out a single rule for social behavior before someone yelled at me for breaking them.

I draw the "make out" line somewhere past second base. Kissing in public, that’s fine. Hands in the pants? Do you really need to share that kind of intimacy with everyone?

Amake 12-21-2009 05:11 PM

Well, porn stars draw the line of "making out" at penetration. . . it's a tricky phrase. Especially when you add in baseball terminology.

I think of it primarily as a synonym for kissing. >_>

They don't do it on our front lawns, though.

Lady Cygnet 12-21-2009 05:33 PM

Unfortunately, I'll probably have to deal with this in a little over a decade with my daughter. Unless the boy and girl were going for a little public frottage or handjobs, I wouldn't blow my stack. What constituted the "making out" anyway?

I'm planning on talking to my daughter openly and honestly about sex. She's a bit young yet, but I'm trying to help her figure out "good touching" versus "bad touching" so that she doesn't have to go through what I started going through when I was four years old. I want her to feel like she can come to me any time she likes to talk about sex, especially if she wants to have sex or feels like she's being pressured to have sex. While I wouldn't mind being a grandmother someday, I'm not in a hurry to become one, and I only want my daughter to have children of her own when and if she is ready to have them, not because her partner is trying to force her into it.

ETA: Dr. Laura is not a person that I would turn to for parenting advice. Her head-in-the-sand attitude regarding matters like this one undermines relationships rather than building them up and creating an environment of trust and responsibility.

Madcow9000 12-22-2009 05:26 AM

I hope to avoid this whole situation that parents inevitably go through by never having children.

I worry too much about the few people that I do care about. There's a reason I blow off the vast majority of people around me. I can't handle them making stupid decisions that ruin their lives.
The best defense for this, (to me at least), is never forming attachments in the first place. Much easier to let people murder themselves without me getting involved.

Bob The Mercenary 12-22-2009 08:38 AM

I only catch her on the radio on trips back home at around 11PM. She is slightly more closed-minded then Ann Coulter, but not as shrill. She has a sense of humor that I can actually chuckle at every once in a while. But, if there was ever someone whom I'd be confortable calling an extremist, it's her.

And Cygnet is on-point about the head-in-the-sand attitude. Calling her the Dr. Phil of radio is giving her too much credit, though.

Mirai Gen 12-22-2009 01:41 PM

She's got more of the whole "protect from and fear change" bullshit philosophy that ends up with kids fucked up in the head. Yeah I'd say 'terrifying' is about right.

Funka Genocide 12-22-2009 05:53 PM

I don't think wanting to stick your tongue in an attractive member of the opposite sexes mouth is a good indication of substance (fucking unicorn bullshit!)abuse.

Doing it on the front lawn of your obviously batshit insane father might be though.

Premmy 12-22-2009 06:14 PM

Honestly Cyggy said all that needs to be said about all this. Close the thread.
