Let's Play: Pokemon!

Welcome to Let's Play: Pokemon!

Since I'm pretty much on bed rest, I have plenty of time to do this, this time around. Let's see if I can keep from fucking it up this time.

I'mma throw these questions out- I need an answer to all of them, if you would.

ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS:

1) Which Pokemon Game? I'm talking Red, Blue, Gold, Silver, one of the Game Boy /DS titles, and none of this 'Ranger' bullshit.

Rather then just going with "most votes" I'll be checking which GENERATION has the most votes first, then picking the game in that generation that has the most votes. Kapiche?

2) What should my starter be? [Fire/water/grass/electric if you picked yellow but who the fuck would pick yellow]

3) what should my TEAM consist of? [I will be ignoring anything that says "magikarp" "Hoppip" or "Fenris' mother" as she's just about as useless, although I'd accept 1 Magikarp or 1 Hoppip on my team]

4) Restrictive or open catching? Should I only catch the pokemon on my list or their earlier incarnations, or should I huck a ball at everything, and just keep my main team leveled and ignore the others?

Polls would be about useless here, but if Fenris or some other moderator feels like they can throw up a poll consisting of the Pokemon Titles for Gameboy to help me count votes.
[being Red, Blue, Yellow, Silver, Gold, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Pearl, Diamond, Platinum]

Flarecobra 01-04-2010 10:42 PM

Blue. Charmander starter. We'll get that when we get there. Open.

Jagos 01-04-2010 10:50 PM

DS series - Pearl - Grass.

With Flare on the "get there" part. Open catching

Loyal 01-04-2010 11:00 PM

Ruby preferred, but anything gen 3+ is fine -- Water type starter -- We'll see when we get there, but at least ONE of the rattata equivalants must be incorporated into the team. -- Open Catch.

Corel 01-04-2010 11:04 PM

I would say no Pokémon that were ridiculously powerful (Ie. Legendaries, but catching them would be fun)

I would also suggest not levelling on every trainer; let's make these gym battles quite close!

Mm, First or Second Gen is my vote; more so Second because that would mean you could go back to the first area but this might make the LP quite longer than anticipated!

P-Sleazy 01-04-2010 11:09 PM

I vote Pokemon Red Generation 1. And your starter should be Squirtle. Why? because then you can fuck up Gary when he picks bulbasaur.

Your overall team should consist of, Farfetch'd, Mr. Mime, Blastoise (evolving squirtle of course), Flareon, VilePlume, and a random pokemon of your choosing. Oh and be sure to get your Warturtle to learn Megapunch. Its a beast. And Farfetch'd should learn Cut. Oh and Mr. Mime should also learn Thunderbolt. And you can have one random pokemon for everyone else to decide on.

Yes. That is what you should do. Also, do open catching. Some of these pokemons require other kinds to get (farfetch'd and mr. Mime) and the others don't show up till much later (Flareon).

Mr.Bookworm 01-04-2010 11:09 PM

1) Gold/Silver/Crystal (I picked Gold, because that's what I had).

Where the series pretty much hit it's peak.

2) Cyndaquil.

I love me some awesome fucking flaming porcupines.

3) Don't care.

4) Also don't care, but I'd really just say catch as much as you can.

Even if you don't use the Legendaries, just kill them and mount their heads on your wall or something (that is an option in Pokemon right?).

Yumil 01-04-2010 11:26 PM

1. Gold
2. Don't care...
3. Only care about having a sneasel and a wobbafett, pick whatever else.
4. Open

Geminex 01-04-2010 11:34 PM

I'm torn between the good old nostalgic Red/Fire or a 3rd gen. 3rd gen, because then you could eventually catch absol. And I like absol.

Regulus Tera 01-04-2010 11:36 PM

I voted Blue because FUCK YOU PIKACHU WHY WILL YOU NOT EVOLVE INTO RAICHU FUCK YOU

Go with Squirtle.

Also your team should be Blastoise, Pidgeot, Raticate (cause I hate you), either Arcanine or Rapidash or Ninetails, Rhydon, and Alakazam.

Open-catching.

Everything she said. Old school fun that pokemon fans of all ages can join in the fun. Otherwise we'll end up with people talking about odd little monsters that make even less sense than some of the original 150. That and we'll end up with Hot Skitty on Wailord Action if we don't stick to the original games. Is that what you want? Is it!?

CABAL49 01-04-2010 11:51 PM

Yellow. Then put Pikachu into a box and never use him again for no reason.

Nikose Tyris 01-04-2010 11:52 PM

Actually Raticate was one of my favorites when I did an all-mouse playthrough.

@Tev: That is exactly what I want.

Yumil 01-04-2010 11:57 PM

2nd Generation, though containing some weird ones, was far better than the first generation. Pokemon got ridiculous after that.

Lost in Time 01-05-2010 12:01 AM

I voted for Blue version because that was my first pokemon game. Starter of Squirtle, open catching, and I don't care what's in your party as long as it has a haunter in it. (Gengar is preferred, but I don't think you'll put that much effort into it to trade him.)

PCD 01-05-2010 12:01 AM

I prefer Gen 2 with Silver, but Blue's a good choice, I suppose. I always went for the Fire starter, simply because it's a lot easier to find water and grass types throughout the game. Worry about your team when you get there. I, for one, always tried to only catch the earliest incarnation of a pokemon with hopes of having to train it up myself, which could maybe encourage the idea of having a team that isn't the same 6 throughout the entire game.

Bells 01-05-2010 12:10 AM

The older games are also shorter, so i think you should pick any of those. Do open catch, but if i may suggest you should have one Butterfree on your final team.

BUTTERFREE RULES ALL BITCHES!

Lost in Time 01-05-2010 12:18 AM

Also, if you end up choosing between a second gen game, make it silver, because Lugia beats the living crap out of Ho-Ho, and I've never played Crystal.

Daimo Mac, The Blue Light of Hope 01-05-2010 12:30 AM

I vote Blue for pure nostalgia.

Starter Bulbasaur.

BitVyper 01-05-2010 12:56 AM

Blue and everyone voting for Blue is stupid. Red is king.

And start with Charmander.

Azisien 01-05-2010 01:42 AM

I voted Platinum but I am also cool for Yellow. Pikachu follows you + all starters = best.

Mirai Gen 01-05-2010 01:58 AM

Blue/Red cause classic is way less painfully enormous.

Eldezar 01-05-2010 01:58 AM

Although I liked yellow and having the three original starters, everybody has to have done that. If they didnt do it, they watched the show. We need a more creative team. I think it should consist of all mid to low tier pokemon so it is an interesting challenge.

Kyanbu The Legend 01-05-2010 02:31 AM

I vote Platinum.

Premmy 01-05-2010 02:55 AM

Red. Bulbasaur. Open catching. Include Scyther, A ghost, A good lightning type, Hitmonlee(or maybe Hitmonchan for all the elemental punches) Gyrados, and Venasaur, don't forget sleep powder and solar beam.

Azisien 01-05-2010 03:18 AM

Beedrill and Clefairy!

Ravashak 01-05-2010 04:33 AM

Considering I've (only) played Red in ages past, I'd prefer to see a newer generation game.
Starter should be a grass-type.
The team should have a Scyther and a ghost-type, don't remember enough to talk about the rest.
Feel free to catch (and use) whatever you want, just try to keep some in the team constant.

Corel 01-05-2010 05:07 AM

Mankee->Primeape all the way baby.

I too would like to see this. Open catching too and have more than a 6 man squad if need be.

Also, barring the Elite Four I would also like to see a lack of Item spamming on things when in battle (Or as much as the opponent uses). I would like to see this be a challenge for you, as I think nearly everyone here has beaten Red/Blue before.

Edit: Also, I'm not sure if you should use the remakes or the classic games; the former are much prettier to look at, but some of the older graphics were pretty hilarious if I remember.

Listen this dude.
But choose Crystal instead.

And fuck you if there's no red Gyrados in your team and Poliwrath. And Cyndaquil.
Team water, ready, set, go!

edit:// I know Cyndaquil isn't water type, but, but..

greed 01-05-2010 07:13 AM

I voted Gold, but Platinum or it's generation is also good.

As for starters, go for the Water dude, it's good in every gen. Grass and Fire both have weak points.

If we're going with the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum generation (unlikely? I dunnoVery likely, it seems), you may wish to choose Fire regardless.
There are only 2 Fire types in the whole game (initially) and while Ponyta/Rapidash isn't bad, they're available late in the game, if I recall correctly, leaving you without fire-support.

Pun fully intended.

Ryong 01-05-2010 08:42 AM

1) Crystal.
2) Fire.
3) Any teams are fine, as long as they have the starter. You could try something absurd with, like, your starter + every Eevolution, but I'm okay with anything that keeps the starter.
4) Open-catching.

Revising Ocelot 01-05-2010 09:18 AM

I owned Blue and Silver, but the internal batteries died in both games long ago so I can't play them now. I'll vote Platinum as I'd like to see the current generation, but my old games would be fine too.

EDIT: Oh, here come the memories... my first starter was Squirtle because I knew he evolved into Blastoise on the game cartridge + box, and I had to justify them! I spent ages wandering around Viridian Forest for a Pikachu because the anime had just started showing in the UK and apparently Pikachu was overpowered, never did find one though.
I caught a Magmar at some point. I was so proud.

BloodyMage 01-05-2010 09:36 AM

Silver
Fire
Whatever
Open

Nightshine 01-05-2010 10:55 AM

I am highly disappointed with whoever voted for the 3rd or 4th generation atrocities disappointments.

Red for the win.

EVILNess 01-05-2010 11:04 AM

I say go for Crystal, the second gens are probably my favorite and Crystal has all those extras.

Tev 01-05-2010 11:52 AM

We need more votes for Red or Blue. Platinum is winning by a tiny margin.

Anyway Gen 1 combined is still beating the pants off of all the others.

Vauron 01-05-2010 12:23 PM

Gen 4, don't care which. Also, build your team like a gym leader. By that I mean pick a theme and stick with it whenever possible.

I agree, should be fun. Maybe using only fluffy Pokemon... which're also pink.

Also my: Anything post 2nd gen, because I haven't played any of those yet.
And with the plant type Pokeyman or whatever I don't know what they called it in the English version. Heck. I don't even remember how they called it in the German version

Nikose Tyris 01-05-2010 01:01 PM

Generation 1 is in the lead.

Would people be okay if I played the remakes instead of the Originals? The graphics are nicer for a let's play, is all. If you really want the original roms, though, that's fine.

[I also own pretty much every pokemon game hardcopy and do not endorse the use of roms at all ever of course.]

Edit: Also, going from what I'm reading, I'd like to play a theme, to make the game more interesting to me. Also, regardless of votes I'm getting a Raichu in here because fuck you he's my favourite.

Also, this will be done in a story-telling style, I think. Because that'll be fun for me as well.

Also, Blue is in the lead and I want Red so some people better start voting fucking red.

Tev 01-05-2010 01:07 PM

I'm cool with the remakes because I've not seen them yet. Also, while I chose Blue, I'd not be angry with you for going Red because I like Mankey.

EDIT: I don't want to change my vote though because it would put Platinum in the lead.

Flarecobra 01-05-2010 01:07 PM

I'd rather it be the classic ones. None of that "Special ability" stuff.

Nikose Tyris 01-05-2010 01:12 PM

Blue: My special ability is to ignore your special abilities.
Red: FUCK YOU.

Mr.Bookworm 01-05-2010 03:04 PM

I'm going to officially change my vote from Gold to Blue, because fuck Nikose. A distant secondary reason is that I got Blue when I was like six from my dad one random day, and I thought it was the most awesome thing ever. My entire team was made up of level 100s, I caught every single Pokemon you can catch in the one game, and the Hall of Fame data got corrupted from me playing it to much. Then I lost the fucking thing and now I can't find it.

Also, start with Charmander. Charmander is pretty fucking awesome too.

synkr0nized 01-05-2010 03:24 PM

I am an oddity in gaming, I guess, in that I don't like Pokeymangs.

There's no option for "No." :/

Also another reason I never liked blue version: Butterfree has always been one of my staples, and Blue gives me weedle instead.

Also bellsprout versus Oddish, Oddish wins every time in my books.

I think you got that backwards. The Catterpie line was easier to get in Blue than Red. You can't walk through Varidian Forest in Blue without tripping over like fifteen Metapods. Also, Bellsprout was in Blue. Oddish was in Red.

Nikose Tyris 01-05-2010 03:32 PM

first part okay yeah fair enough.

second part was EXACTLY what I said though, I hate bellsprout and y'all want me to play blue. jerks.

Azisien 01-05-2010 03:47 PM

Someone brought up a good point earlier. Why not use FireRed or LeafGreen? They're almost the same as the old ones, but they don't look like complete ass.

Though then it'll be impossible to fight Missingno?

Nikose Tyris 01-05-2010 03:52 PM

Hey good idea and since there is no blue guess I'm going with FireRed. :D

Flarecobra 01-05-2010 04:06 PM

Because it's basically Gen 3 set in Kanto, and people want Gen 1?

Revising Ocelot 01-05-2010 04:08 PM

So why have the poll when you just ignore it? This is blatant post canvassing and I will not stand for it! Intolerable!

Well it has special abilities too but jesus, suck it up.

Nikose Tyris 01-05-2010 04:13 PM

I'm downloading both roms and comparing now. [FireRed is ridiculously similar to Regular Red, and if push comes to shove and I do choose FireRed, then I'll skip every non-Kanto Pokemon and be like "what the fuck, is some sort of hideous mutant, oh my gaaaawwwwwwd"

The Argent Lord 01-05-2010 04:17 PM

I say go with FireRed, it'll be all the nostalgia that the Gen 1 voters want, with better graphics.

Daimo Mac, The Blue Light of Hope 01-05-2010 04:17 PM

If memory serves, all the non Kanto Pokemon are only on the Seven Islands.

Nikose Tyris 01-05-2010 04:22 PM

Which I doubt I would be participating in anyway.

Loyal 01-05-2010 04:30 PM

Fire Red gives Charmander Metal Claw.

Seriously what the fuck. That COMPLETELY defeats the soul-crushing hilarity of him vs Brock and turns it into something just plain sad.

The Argent Lord 01-05-2010 04:32 PM

Honestly, I never had trouble with Brock, even the first time I played when I took Charmander and had no idea what I was doing.

Nikose Tyris 01-05-2010 04:32 PM

I could not take Metal Claw?

Loyal 01-05-2010 04:41 PM

I don't think there are any TMs available before Brock, and Charmie gets it pretty early.

He also no longer gets Rage, and Rage is boring now anyway.

Lost in Time 01-05-2010 05:57 PM
