I'm giving it one month until the gov'mint bans videogames targeted at underage children because of the danger of perverts drawing Mario porn.

I can't think of anything to say, but I have to say something. I really didn't expect Galaxy 2 and Metroid to come out less than a year after they were announced.
HEY GUYS, I'M EXCITED TOO, OK?! There, that sums up my feelings on the matter rather well. |

Also, yeah, I'm probably overreacting to the suit... I'm still used to the non-spherical-shoulder power suit from Zero Mission, Prime, and Super. /shrug |

And he had only one more day until retirement, too.

If the trailer's any indication, that would be the ubiquitous MBD. His one line, "Remembah me?" *visorflip* followed by its memetic mutation .0953 seconds later, means he's probably a semi-major character.

I'm reading about how Other M's gameplay is supposed to work, and it sounds.... schizophrenic. If it works, it'll be an interesting way of using the Wiimote, but switching your brain between playstyles rapidly sounds frustrating.
I remain cautious of the game in general. It sounds more plot/character heavy, which would make me concerned at the best of times let alone when the guys behind DOA Beach Volleyball are in control. Seeing so much suitless Samus in the previews is not exactly serving to allay my worries. Mainly though these things almost invariably detract from elements like sequence breaking and the feeling of isolation on a hostile world. The gameplay looks cool, although worrisomely combat focused, which could just be trailer-syndrome, although even then it still looks like it's been built for a more combat oriented game. I'm not trying to write it off before giving it a chance, but it's got me a little edgy. Edit: Reading this on wiki is really not helping: "Yoshio Sakamoto confirmed that Other M will feature story progression in the same manner as Metroid Fusion." Other quotes I'm seeing make it sound a lot like Fusion in a not-too-good way. I'm getting the feel that the exploration will be limited to areas instead of just plunking you down on a planet and saying "have at'er." Although if they did a lot more like that one bit in Fusion where, after a really complex piece of sequence breaking (it was present in the game, just not much), Adam was like "how the fuck did you get there?" That would be a bit fun. A plot that evolved around your sequence breaking would be a bit cool. I doubt they'll do it though. |
Hmm, had a quick look around, still no sign of the trailer.
Did find this hands on review though. Reviewer seems to like it, although I have to admit I'm not so impressed by those dialogue snippets he quoted. Still, sounds like it'll be a solid game, and hopefully it won't end up too linear. |

Keep in mind that Team Ninja has not handled a Metroid game before; of course it's going to be different. [edit] By "vague", I mean your entire post consists of "It might be different and I don't trust them because I think they'll make it different; It would be just terrible if they made it different." |
Quote:
I also said that what I'm reading gives me the feel that exploration will be limited to specific areas instead of being entirely open-ended. I think why this is a negative thing is pretty self-evident. If that's not specific enough, I'm not really sure what you want from me, as the game isn't out yet, and all I really have to go on are trailers and vague statements from the developer. Thanks for reducing everything I said to "they changed it now it sucks" though. I guess it's a lot simpler? There's nothing wrong with making it different - Metroid Prime was different, and it was awesome. It's taking away the things that make it unique and good that I take issue with. However, I'm not saying that they're doing this, so there's no point in arguing that matter yet. I'm just saying that the way it's being presented is making me leery. Edit: Oh, and I pointed out a very specific interface issue right off the bat. |
Noncon and I are on opposing ends. He thinks it's going to be awful, I'm cautiously optimistic that new Team Ninja isn't going to be nearly as boob-jiggly awfultastic as before.
The fact that her military outfit looks respectable without showing tons of cleavage shows Samus Aran to be very tough but also really, really cute. It's one step in the maturely handling the subject direction and away from the Maturely handling the subject. Plus Team Ninja's pretty much entirely new since Itigaki left and half of the team quit and sued Tecmo. Noncon's not convinced Team Ninja learned their lesson from last time, if Ninja Gaiden "Sexaxis" and DOA Paradise are to be remembered. |
Team ninja is not really a "1 note" kind of team. They certainly have a general direction they go trough, but c'mon...
So far what i got from Another M is that it seems to be a more personal story about Samus and her Inner Feelings. The Zero Suit stuff doesn't botter me, because unless she is in action she doesn't need her Varia suit... so, it does make sense to have her around a bit more in "normal" clothing. I'm glad they are trying to explore a new dimension of the character of Samus, instead of just shaping a new chapter in the Metroid book... they can fail, but i would bet if they do, they will do it on poor execution or making the work feel "disconnected" from the rest of the series. But not by any "oversexualization" |
Retro was also the one who came up with the Zero Suit, and they made Metroid Prime.
Sooooooo.... |
My main worries about this game aren't limited to OMGSAMUSBOOBIESLULZ.
Basically, and perhaps I'm way off base here, but when I hear Team Ninja, my first thoughts are Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden. I thought Ninja Gaiden was fucking awesome, and Ninja Gaiden II was also pretty great, though not as good as the first game. My problem is that they decided that they're going to try and flesh out Samus as a character and have a deeper story or some such nonsense. I am not inherently opposed to this idea either, though I do worry, like BitVyper said, that it'll detract from other positive elements of the Metroid games. However, I have seen nothing that suggests that Team Ninja has ever had writing that even the nicest person would call mediocre. When I hear Team Ninja and writing in the same sentence my first thought is "SO. BAD." Maybe I've missed some fifty other titles they've done that have had writing amazing enough to bring me to tears, but I doubt it. I just think that the group trying to flesh out Samus' character, something prior games have gotten along fine without, should be a group better known for their writing ability, instead of Team Ninja. Furthermore, I'm not sure how I feel about the gameplay. 2D? Awesome. Great. Fantastic. 2D that can switch into first person whenever? I worry. It might be good and evolve the gameplay like never before seen, but I'm suspicious because it is new. Plus, as far as I know, Team Ninja doesn't exactly have experience making this type of title, and as such I don't know if it will have any of the qualities I enjoy in a Metroid game. |
Quote:
Cause I mostly agree - their writing hasn't been anything to jump and wave a club around about, but this seems like they're at least trying. Even if it isn't Mass Effect 2 it certainly won't be Bayonetta, and nobody really checks out Metroid for the story. |
Twitter is kind of convenient though.
Quote:
But yeah. Dammit Twitter. |
Fair enough!
Quote:
At least Zero Mission went back to basics and ruled because of it. |
I find it ironic that people are worried about Metroid when Retro did something entirely new with Metroid after such a long time of NO M games.
And let's be reasonable, Itagaki is no longer a part of Team Ninja. While that was known for "OMGBOOOOOBS!" while he was around, perhaps even Team Ninja wanted to take a new direction after so much work on the DoA and Gaiden series. |
This year has killed me for being excited for stuff.

Just out of curiousity I did a google search for 'Samus' and 'Team Ninja'. I'm sure you can guess the sort of thing that came up. Oh well, here is a picture of Samus kicking a pirate in the face. |

Oh please..... i had to search for was "Samus" and i got Bikini Samus, Zombie samus and Zelda Making out with Samus while peach watches within the first 5 pages. Uh, what? The Zero Suit is named after Metroid Zero Mission, which was made by Nintendo R&D 1, aka Sakamoto's team. The Zero Suit was then inserted into Prime 2 and 3 because Nintendo has been trying to nail out Samus' design since then. Retro had nothing to do with that. |
Ohh, that's right, for some reason I always thought Metroid Prime 2 released before Zero Mission. I thought the ending with Samus shedding her armor in front of the Lumoth was the first appearance of the ZS.
...Goddamn that was dumb. "Duhurrr Zero suit first showed up in a game that isn't Zero Mission." Quote:
Team Ninja is aping old school side-scrolling with first-person perspective gameplay. Retro at least did something entirely different that many fans chided them for early on. Before they found it it was, you know, perfect. Plus Team Ninja kinda has a bad rep anyway. |
Irony is the buzzword of the internet.
Quote:
|
Let's look at the situation that I'm describing:
A company with no track record makes a good game. A company with a bad record pulls out a game that awes fans, with a character that they're used to objectifying. The irony comes more or less from the fact that they're doing something outside of their zone with a company that's just about as bad as Disney when we're discussing IP. If that's not situational irony (and a ballsy move on Nintendo's part) then I don't know what else could be crazy about this team up. |
I rather like that Other M is focusing on some of Samus' more physical talents (like kicking pirates in the face) as it fleshes out the fact that she's not just some cyborg with a gun-arm and a bitchin' suit. She's a superhuman athlete with a gun-arm and a bitchin suit.
Also, I have to say that (minus certain parts of Prime 3) I rather enjoyed the direction Retro took with the Prime series, and I think I like the idea of melding 2d AND FPS action into one. The problem is going to be, as several others have put it, how they pull off the writing, dialogue, and story progression. Plot in Metroid has always (barring Fusion and the more linear parts of Zero Mission, for those of you who did not sequence break the hell out of that game) been a background thing. You have a general idea of what's going on at all times, where you need to go, what powerups you need to get there, etc. Fusion was annoying because it was fucking gated from the start. You had to take orders from a goddamn computer EVERY TIME you entered a new sector through the front door. For those of you with the patience to shinespark your way to the bonus cutscene where Adam goes How the Hell did you do that?, you had to backtrack all the way back to that area and go through it again ANYWAY. I actually LIKED Fusion as a game (mainly for the SA-X sequences, those fucking had my heart racing), but the linearity was terrible. |

I find it kind of strange that Samus' power suit has gotten more feminine over the years. It seems like a really odd and unnecessary shift.
Like, if she's in that suit, how the hell thin is her waist? So okay you look at those suits and you see the first one, and it's totally androgynous. Then the middle one you look at the waist and thighs and go "Huh...looks kinda feminine," then the Fusion Suit looks a damn bit like they padded out her breasts and thighs and calf muscles. I guess it kinda makes sense since it's all biological/technological now what with her Metroid status, but...still. |

It's because the torso is bulky and then it has heavy armour on the legs. Some art exaggerates it a bit more. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...troidSamus.gif But once again, it's hardly anything new. |
Besides, considering all the acrobatic stuff she does in that suit (not counting the morph ball), a bulky suit likely wouldn't fly.
The Varia suit, well, it's the Varia suit. I'm not sure what purpose the Shoulders of Doom or the massive hip plates serve (temperature regulation maybe?), but you can bet there'd be hell to pay if they were removed from the design. :P |

Fun fact: Chôzo (彫像) means "statue", not the people represented, which is reffered by "bird people". And it's been leaked: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFmzH52YrCk Watch it before Nintendo pulls it. |
Ah, so it's just a reenactment of the mother brain battle. Pity, I was hoping for a second showdown.

I just dislike the waist, since it makes it look like she's about as big around at the waist as my thigh.
Did I mention I'm really thin? |

You can trace an undercurrent of stupid sexualization all the way back to "Justin Bailey" but at least so far it's an undercurrent.
I liked the Zero Suit segment in Zero Mission and the Brawl incarnation evoked that, so I liked it. There are people who couldn't get past the fact that it's a form-fitting catsuit and I can't just straight up tell them they're wrong. Team Ninja has a reputation for two things: legitimately difficult games (Gaiden) and "Every man loves tits." But good news, everyone! This guy is in control of scripting. "One of my goals is to present Samus as an appealing human character, and that involves explaining a little bit about what happened in her past as well as the characters that influenced her. The story will play a big part." He never comes out and says so but I'm pretty sure that the whole story thing is going to be his bag, and he's been with Metroid since the beginning. |

Regarding that 2D-3D switch controversy back on the first page before we started talking about how hot Samus is, Shadow Complex had something similar and it being "Controid", no one seemed to have much of a problem with it and most people seemed to like it.
EDIT: Also they totally padded out that 100 Classic Book Collection with like twenty Shakespeare plays, AND included Call of the Wild and White Fang for Jack London but no Sea Wolf. I also see neither Dracula OR Journey to the Center of the Earth. Quite the farce indeed! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100_Cla...ook_Collection |
I have nothing to contribute to this thread but that is one of the most fucking awful collections of books I have ever seen. Ho shit- are Nintendo up Dickens ass or what?
|
The six hundred stories that Dickens' wrote about young London rapscallions with strife-filled lives ending with heart-warming endings never fail to bring a tear to the eye of any Nintendo executive.

I am worried about not being able to move or dodge when in first-person. I don't like the idea of having to take damage because I need to fire a missile but there's more than one baddie around. I'm also worried about the auto-targeting, just because when auto-targeting goes wrong, it goes wrong. It probably won't go wrong, though. Probably. |
Murphy's law makes me think otherwise. But if Ninja and Nintendo are known for, it's that controls work rather well.

I...have no idea what she's talking about. I think that was the most ambiguous trailer I've seen in ages.
But holy shit that's some good direction and voice acting. |

EDIT: Also, my post count now matches my Pokedex number. |
What the hell was that about? The Nintendo Power comic with Samus being an orphan of a space pirate attack and raised by the Chozo was a better backstory than whatever this is (unless its like her emo teenage bounty hunting years).
Also eagerly awaiting the day they announce the English release name, since "Other M" is idiotic. Unless they're just going to go with that, in which case I can safely say I don't know what they're doing over there. This appears to be what happens when you try to add a backstory to something which heretofore has basically been "fight space pirates, save ancient civilization, kill Metroid, save universe, repeat". |

EDIT: Well, for what little has been released anyway. |
Oh c'mon you guys are going way too hard on the writing here...
Sure, you can SEE they are pushing very very hard for a "this is a deep personal story" angle here, but the effort itself is totally valid, and considering all the variables surrounding this title, i think we should be glad they are going for a more "Personal Drama" angle... Samus could easily be another One liner spouting cardboard cutout, they seem to be at least giving it a honest try to give her another dimension, i would wait a little longer before going after the writing |

I don't know about you guys, but I never cared about Samus. She always felt bland and nothing more than an avatar for you to use and explore this world with. Considering I never cared for games with little sense of direction, Metroid and Super Metroid never really managed to catch my attention the way it seemed to do with everyone else (On that note I don't get all the hatred for Fusion just because it couldn't be sequence-broken like the others, but w/e). Then Metroid Prime (At least I think Prime did it first >.>) brought the concept of reading all the lore and backstory of the planet gradually as you explored to the game, and kept me interested enough to finish the game.
Other M is trying to make Samus, not her environment, the rich experience this time around. I'll have faith in them, and will probably enjoy the game regardless because I'm a sucker for the Metroid series after Prime. Then again, I only just started Prime 2 last week, so I'm probably not a big enough Metroid nerd to have an opinion here :P |
