LETS PLAY POKEMON EMERALD! Yeah, yeah, I know, there's enough of this crap already that isn't being updated on a regular basis, and I've been dissuaded from starting an LP before, but eh, whatever. I have a working copy of Emerald, and a high threshold for pain, suffering, and unappreciated work. THEREFORE! I'm doing Emerald. Because nobody's doing a Gen III game. We have one Gen I game that updates and one that doesn't exist (I blame Nikose), and one Gen II game that's been on hiatus for a while (Token, you asshat). My girlfriend's playing my physical cartridge, so when I booted up my ROM, I decided to start screencapping stuff for an LP. I have a couple of rules for this LP: You guys don't get much of a say in this one. I know, I know, GC is a little more democratic with his, but I will be taking SOME things you guys say into consideration (i.e. what starter I pick - though I may override your votes if I really feel like it, which Pokemon I capture at each Route, what their nicknames will be; this last one I WILL always abide by whatever gets the most votes). I'm not Nuzlocke-ing this one. I hate the whole idea of treating a KO'd Poke as dead, and being restricted to capturing the first Pokemon you find in a route. So Nuzlocke can fuck off. Because Emerald is already fucking HARD. I will be taking my own route through the game. If there is something you really, really, really feel I must do before I go anywhere, please state so, and I will take your posts into account before making my next decision on where to go. I dislike Treecko. I don't really know why but I just dislike the look of it and it's evolved forms, so I'd personally suggest either of the other two.

Must disagree on the subject of Mudkip. While I to do enjoy the partaking of Mudkipz and value their use in battle, I further condone the use and appliance of Torchiks in battle.
I say a new day and age is here, one in which Torchikz are properly appreciated for their pros and cons, and can leave the shadow of the much adored Mudkipz. |

As most of you seem on the fence between Mudkip and Torchik, Imma put my foot down and go with Torchik. I can always grab a Barboach later, and there are more than enough grass types to not pick Treecko. The other fire types in Hoenn are REALLY SLOW.

Yeah, I went with Mac's suggestion for Torchic's name. I figured it would go right along with my entirely-spur-of-the-moment decision to make frequent fast-food chain references. I'm very sad that I didn't get to Mauve's suggestion until AFTER I'd already played and written the update. Also, I'm planning on doing mini-updates each time I add a new Pokemon to the team, kinda like character profiles. This way, I can sort of explain each team member's personality in full, along with various other random unnecessary factoids. There won't be too many - when I play Pokemon, I don't swap out team members very often unless one of them becomes obsolete. I try to put together a team that will last right up to the end of the game. Hence, when I ask you guys for input on what Pokemon I should pick up for the team, what I really mean is SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY No 6 Beautifly team, no "Not Fully Evolved only" team, nothing like that. Each team slot has to be filled by something that will at least get me through the next Gym, though something I can keep long term would be preferable. Next leg of the journey is Oldale to Petalburg. I would like to ask from you: a) which Pokemon (if any) should I capture (keeping the previous couple of paragraphs in mind) along the way b) how should I go about trainer battles, etc? I know I wasn't too good about it in this update, because apparently despite the HP bar moving back and forth, my opponents never hit me with an attack. Emerald doesn't stop after the opponent makes a move, and it goes right to your turn, and I'm horrible with savestates. c) am I doing a decent job for my first LP? Granted, this is only the second update but given a couple of comments I'm wondering if I'm barking up the wrong tree. Sounds great. Was already figuring a Slaking and a Breloom, though Breloom might push it once we hit Mossdeep (as I recall, the twins are master trolls, and I'll already have Combusken/Blaziken by that point, amplifying my Fighting weakness).
Not too sure if I'll go for Swellow... Altaria sounds fantastic, but I won't bump into Swablu until just before Meteor Falls. I'm thinking Barboach is gonna be my water type... if I can remember where to find it. Whiscash is a serviceable substitute for Swampert (Used him in Diamond against E4 to great effect, despite his speed). I've also been thinking about picking up Ralts, as I've found Gardevoir to be a decent substitute for Alakazam (especially given the fact that you can evolve Kirlia in a ROM, whereas Kadabra requires some trickery). Only problem with Ralts is it will need level grinding to actually get it to learn Confusion. |
I'd go with a sold well balanced team. I suggest getting Gyarados as soon as possible (ie Magikarp and grind it). They may have a x4 weakness to Lightning, but i find them to have some powerful early game movies.

That being said. Tailow for something that can learn Fly. Zigzagoon because as I understand it he learns way too many HM moves to NOT make an HM bitch. And Ralts so that you can have a team member plant creepy dreams into the minds of your opponents. |

Like the Torchik and its name, as I am a denizen of KY.
I suggest a Ralts definitely, and maybe a Breloom. If you don't want a Gyrados, maybe you can use a Crawdaunt, or a Wiscash as you yourself suggested. I'd recommend a Bagon or Trapinch to at some point. Both of those were always useful in my opinion, and Trapinch is easier to acquire and train than most dragon-types. |
Ooh, ooh, this looks very promising. You should try and catch a slakoth and make it usable, because there's lots of fun to be had with a Slaking that can punch through Rhydons.
Also, I get my sprites from The Spriters Resource. Mostly from the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon section. I use Graphicsgale to cut out the individual sprites and add alpha transparency. Also also, my next update is coming soon I assure you yes |

Brock can be easily dealt with by using a Butterfree, Mankey, or either Nidoran (double kick). Oddish and Bellsprout can be found just north of Misty's gym, and if you're planning ahead you could've gotten a Pikachu in Viridian Forest. You don't need the starter for them.
The Fire starter is always a solid choice for pretty much every other aspect of the game, including the Elite Four. Hell, the fire starter is good in every game. Particularly because it's often a pain to find fire types otherwise. |

Calling it "more challenging" based on its performance in the first two gyms hardly holds much water. Particularly when considering its excellent performance in all other gyms except possibly Giovanni.

Even then, the fully evolved Charizard is useful because it's flying second type gives it resistance to Goivanni's favourite move ever, fissure. Them being half rock puts a somewhat dampener on this, but regardless, it's not like the fire type is totally useless against Goivanni either.

I just recently finished Yellow with a team of Pikachu (Yes, I didn't ditch it), Dugtrio, Venusaur, Blastoise, Charizard, and Snorlax. Between Blastoise and Dugtrio, Giovanni rarely had time to attack.
Hell, Pikachu was USEFUL during the E4, right on up to Champion. Not saying everyone else didn't have it covered, but still. I still had to level grind an hour straight to get everyone to at least 50 and even then I was still underlevel compared to E4. MINI-UPDATE TIEM! By the way, you guys looking at the filenames? I like to insert a little wordplay in some of them, if you've noticed. Yes. Ecks hates his dad. As I'm sure I've stated, Ecks is not an author avatar. I actually love my dad, who has been there for me my whole life. Also, I began to set up Norman's backstory way back in the first chapter, where I was still struggling to find Ecks' motivation to continue on past "leaving this hole forever." I figured, hell, we can spend the first half of the game on Ecks' quest for vengeance against his father, and then by that point, he'll already be on such a massive power trip that he'll just have to go all the way to the top. Also, how do you like Aryll? I have this cool idea where as a Ralts, she's the clingy, jealous younger sister typical in most anime; When she evolves to Kirlia, she'll be the overprotective, jealous older sister; and when she makes the jump to Gardevoir, she'll be full blown Team Mom with shades of Hot Shounen Mom (in the sense that she'll still tease the hell out of Ecks with suggestive jokes). Not sure whether or not Kentucky is going to go through personality changes as he evolves... I'll need a tad bit more time (I better hurry, I think Torchic hits Combusken at 14 or 15...) to think on that one. Slakoth's next on my list. I already know what I'm doing as far as his personality is concerned (here's a hint, when he hits Vigoroth, he's gonna be an exercise nut), however, I would again like you guys to give me some ideas on nicknames. You guys have no problem doing it for Cartoonist when HE askes for nicknames, so quit being slackers. You need a grass type AND a water type. Go for a Shroomish, preferably female. That way you can make a Beatles reference by naming it Lucy. I'm not sure what water types there are between the two towns, probably not many, and as such I have no ideas on names.

As far as the Water-type is concerned... I've been thinking about a Marill. But then I may just as well NOT use one... because the LAST time I played through Emerald I ended up relying on Rollout WAY TOO MUCH. But damn, was it fun to troll with. Name: Aryll Species: Ralts Age: Approx. 2 years Sex: Female Aryll was born to a Ralts pair on Route 102. As with most Ralts born in the wild, Aryll could sense the emotions of both Pokemon and people. One day, she found herself wandering into nearby Petalburg City, where she happened upon a teenage boy followed by his younger sister. After observing them for some time, Aryll noticed that the younger sibling constantly pestered her older brother for attention. Holy crap, it took so long just to get there... and I wanted to start on the write up. I had saved 217 pictures, and I had to split the last update into pieces because I had over 50000 characters... so I cut it shorter than I intended to. After I finish the write-up, I'll post it, and do the next character profile before I actually get up to Rustboro. This way, once I GET to Rustboro, we'll have more than enough room for the Gym Battle. I'm still debating on whether or not I want to change the sprites I'm using. Cartoonist has offered to do some animated GIFs for me to replace the ones I've been using. And if I do that, the change will be retroactive. I will go back and edit the urls in the image tags. On that note, I'm really sorry that I'm not as uber-awesome at manipulating sprites and animating as Cartoonist is. Considering how much time I waste recoloring sprites (and occasionally editing them entirely) you'd think I'd invest more time into learning how to do these awesome things. I'd like to apologize for not having an update out last week. Only thing that really needs to be done at this point is replacing the placeholders I use for the Pokemon when I write the dialogue for the image tags so the sprites appear...
...but I still haven't decided if I want to continue using mine, or let Cartoonist do something he mentioned in a PM last week. A big factor of my indecision is lack of word from Cartoonist, whom I have not HEARD FROM since last week. I think what I'm going to do is, providing I get some time to do it between now and tomorrow night, I'm going to go ahead, put in the image tags for MY sprites, post the update, and then when Cartoonist comes out of his coffin or wherever he hides from the sunlight and torch-bearing villagers, we'll iron out whether or not he still wants to do sprites for me. |

OKAY! I'VE GOT SOME GOOD NEWS AND SOME BAD NEWS.
BAD NEWS FIRST! I won't have the update ready tonight. Might not have it ready for tomorrow, either. GOOD NEWS! CARTOONIST IS ALIVE! And he's got some sprites for me! In fact, go back through the first couple of updates and check out Kentucky's new look. Don't have the time or patience to go in and edit ALL of the goddamn image tags tonight, so I'll leave it to just those updates for now. I will go in and edit chapter 3 parts I and II and Aryll's character profile tomorrow night... maybe. And now that I have Cartoonists sprites available and up on photobucket, I can now insert the image tags for Chapter 4, and I will have THAT up at some point, followed by maybe a character profile. Think we'll take a break here. --- And that wraps up this update. I'll be doing Worf's character profile in the next update, Mac's following the Rustboro update. SURPRISE! Worf snuck up on me. It was a very spur of the moment thing. I weighed my options and decided I absofuckinglutely NEEDED Rollout. I was watching a Star Trek: TNG marathon last Tuesday and that got TNG stuck in my head... And thus I named Marill Worf and Mac was planned though. I dunno why, but I kept missing screens right around the time I caught him and started using him. For starters, I've been trying to do that thing Cartoonist does where he shows one screen at the Pokemon Center, which tells you all you really need to know about what he did, without any explanation. I forgot to do that shortly after catching Mac. I also forgot to screencap the part where I put him in front of the party. I forgot several screens during the battle with James, mostly the "Bug Catcher James would like to battle!" part. The part where I sent out Mac, etc. Dunno what my problem is, but I'm too lazy to go back and fix it. The dialogue somewhat glosses over this, but I'm not gonna rely on that to put it out of your minds. I'll do better next time, I swear. I have room for two more permanent party members. At this point, I've got a Fire-type (which will eventually dual-type in Fighting), a Water-type, a Psychic-type, and a Normal-type. What should I grab to round this out? I'm figuring on a Trapinch at some point, but that's damn near halfway through the game. It'll be months before I even reach Mauville City. I may cave in and carry an Aron, because I've never had an Aggron before, and I want to see how it plays to decide whether or not I want to put one together for HG. Any advice on what to pick would be appreciated. |

You're so much kinder in regards to naming your Pokemon than I am. I woulda named the Marill Vermin, especially since he seems too dedicated to Ecks to protest it. I also woulda named the Zigzagoon Rabies.
But then, I named my Stantler after a hunting rifle, my Togepi after an egg-based breakfast food, and my Arbok after a company that makes shoes and purses. I'm a good Pokemon trainer. I'm enjoying this LP so far. :D |

Chimchar ~ Sun Wukong (so bleedin appropriate) Gyarados' ~ Shin Ryu and Shen Long |
Man I got a Tauros and Miltank named Angus and Wagyu.
