Portal is free until May 24th. Also, it's on Mac now.

Exactly what it says on the tin. All you'll need is Steam.

Lost in Time 05-12-2010 03:11 PM

Now I wish I didn't have it so I could get it again, and again. I love Valve.

Token 05-12-2010 03:16 PM

Sadly, Steam isn't working for me. Curses.

Of course it isn't. C'mon one of the biggest games is being downloaded for free.

Aerozord 05-12-2010 03:27 PM

I beat it, but traded it in when I got TF2 for the PC. please, PLEASE let this include the extra levels

Amake 05-12-2010 03:38 PM

There are extra levels? O_o

Ryanderman 05-12-2010 03:45 PM

Oh thank you Token a thousand times for announcing this. I tried to buy Portal last year, but my computer (purchased in 2004) could not run it. I've since bought a new computer, but haven't thought of trying to get Portal again. Now I can for free! HAHA!

they released it as a DLC for 360 version awhile back, not sure what they did for it on the PC end

Donomni 05-12-2010 04:19 PM

Not being able to afford everything at once has it's advantages... for once!

PyrosNine 05-12-2010 05:45 PM

The extra levels are FREE on PC, you only had to pay for them on the XBOX 360, as they needed editing to work on that. They were borrowed and modified from Portal the Flash Map Pack.

Sadly, I already own the game, the mods, and have beaten it to every possible extent possible. Lucky blokes, something made free that I already paid for, when I'm the king of the free lunch!

Doc ock rokc 05-12-2010 07:42 PM

I love Portal To bad I bought it long ago. who is expcing that Valve will release Portal 2 this fall and reveal that in e3?

are they already in this or do I need to download them?

Viridis 05-12-2010 08:04 PM

From what I understand (Wikipedia) the extra levels were exclusive to the XBox Live Arcade.

The Extra levels can be reached by a mod.

Aerozord 05-12-2010 10:29 PM

so, whats a good place for portal mods? or feel free to share any of your personal favorite custom levels, because I need me some extra content

Sky Warrior Bob 05-13-2010 05:14 AM

That prior link, was it for this Portal Prelude, or is this something entirely different?

mauve 05-13-2010 01:49 PM

Probably a dumb question, but does anyone know if Mac users will be able to play on Steam with PC users?

That's something else. I've downloaded both and just started the prelude. It's not bad.

For TF2 I know the answer is yes. No idea for other games.

A: Mac and PC users will all play together, on the same servers. We're not creating two separate universes. We're all going to be one big, happy family with guns locked in a bloody, never-ending struggle for cap points.

atleast with TF2 they said you could

mauve 05-13-2010 02:31 PM

Yay! I hope it works for the L4D franchise, too.

I mean, I know a lot of macs aren't one-click-only anymore, but obvious joke is obvious.

Viridis 05-15-2010 03:38 PM

The Portal Prelude mod has pissed me off more than it should have.

Aerozord 05-15-2010 03:41 PM

I tried it myself, it lacks the balance of the games actual maps. I cant even move beyond like, the second section

Viridis 05-15-2010 03:51 PM

It seems to rely on your being pretty good at Portal. Mostly the double fling and stuff like that. I'm having a hard time placing a portal mid-fall because of the way the orientation/camera changes after passing through one.

Aerozord 05-15-2010 03:54 PM

which is what I meant about it not being balanced, asks way too much for early levels. More about twitch then puzzle solving

Viridis 05-15-2010 04:02 PM

Yeah. More than once I've known the solution but haven't had the reflexes to act it out.

Edit: Just finished the Flash Mappack. Very fun.

Ecks 05-18-2010 05:19 PM

Just finished Testchamber 19 (So I'm several years late to the party, so what?).

Holy shit, I only had under a minute to go to pluck the red module out of the air, get it over to the incinerator, open it up and throw the bastard in. I had literally 1 second on the clock when GLaDoS asploded. Talk about close call.

It might not have been that close. You have a few more minutes than they make it seem. If you don't get it done by the time the clock ends she says she doesn't have enough neurotoxin to kill you and has to synthesize more, putting a few more on the clock. Then you die.

I suggest trying the Flash Mappack mod now, but not the Portal Prelude. The former is more testchamber goodness. The latter is frustratingly hard.

Fuck you, GLaDoS!

Also, will have to look into that. I heartily enjoyed the testchambers. Well, the ones that weren't crazyhard groanfests of "Oh man, I have to do more of THIS?"

Especially the second half of testchamber 19. Fuck that part SO HARD.

Not last I checked... which was earlier this week, when I downloaded and played it. Maybe it did that at some earlier point in the game's history, but in the most recent version it doesn't.

Viridis 05-19-2010 12:48 AM

Weird. I clearly remember some line about making more. I'm inclined to now sit in the boss room until the timer ends. Off to prove I'm not crazy!

Edit: Seems I'm crazy. Just flat out died when the timer ended. At SOME point she says "Huh! There isn't enough neurotoxin to kill you, so I guess you win. Ha! I'm making more. That's going to take a few minutes though. Meanwhile, oh, look, it's your old pal, the Rocket Turret." but it seems to be unrelated to the timer. *shrug*

Ecks 05-19-2010 06:42 PM

In light of this new evidence, hurray! My last second foiling of the bad-thingie's plan is still a valid moment of "Whew! That was a close one!"

Also, anyone else laugh at the song she sings during the credits?

Loyal 05-19-2010 07:00 PM

I'm trying to do the Transmission acheivment, but for the life of me I can't do jack squat with the one in Chamber 06. I can never grab the radio in midair without getting it perfectly stuck in its little cubby hole, and no matter how I place my portal I can never seem to grab the radio THROUGH the portal.

Could someone provide a screenshot or something of where and in what direction exactly the portal must be for me to get this?

That's the one with the hole in the wall above an Emancipation Grid, right? I just put a portal on the ceiling, fell through and grabbed it as I was falling. Took quite a few tries but it worked eventually.

Loyal 05-19-2010 07:19 PM

Which as I said isn't working. A combination of low FPS and poor timing makes that perfectly impossible for me. Hence my request for a stationary solution which from what I've heard is possible; however the source in question failed to specify how.

Viridis 05-19-2010 07:34 PM

I just realized we were talking about different chambers. The one you're talking about... yeah I couldn't get that one either. Since I was just dicking around, though, I turned on cheats and noclipped up to it. The achievement system didn't seem to care.

Here's a video. Go to around 2:15 for the chamber you're talking about. They get it without falling through.

Oh yes. In case you don't know, it was written for them by Jonathan Coulton, who has since become a major part of my music collection for his unique style of, what Yahtzee put it as: "upbeat folk music about robots."

Of course I did!

Aerozord 05-20-2010 06:37 PM

then you now know that the solution to all things, is rhubarb

Ecks 05-22-2010 06:41 PM

I say, that is truly liberating information.

My LP chapter won't finish writing itself? RHUBARB!
