On a stiiiiiiiiiiiick!

Okay folks, it's summer time. Time for us to break out the stick based foods like corndogs and ice cream bars....maybe get a little wild with corn on the cob....on a stick, and other such mobile food-stuffs.

For the adventurous, Japan has a new offering to the gods of stick-based eatery: Sushi on a stick!

Sushi Poppers are, well, sushi on a stick. Made fresh daily, wrapped in paper, and intended to be shoved free of their papery cocoons and eaten on the go. By people who are willing to eat sushi on a stick.
So yeah, there's that. What is the yummiest thing you've carried around on a stick? What was the worst?

Man, I would totally go for a Sushi Popper.

For other stuff on a stick, not much really. Roasted marshmallows. Or burned, rather. I have a habit of setting mine on fire.

Frozen, chocolate-covered cheesecake slice on a stick.

Dark chocolate-covered caramel apples on a stick.

These are fantastic, magical things.

I've heard rumors that at the local county fair this year, they'll have Deep-Fried Ice Cream.

I'll see if I can get one, and get a picture of it.

I'd have to agree with Seil on the kabobs, but I have a box of pancakes and sausage on a stick in the freezer.

Deep fried ice cream is possibly the best thing in the universe. I wouldn't doubt it.

Mm, iced sweets (Chinese characters appear not to be working) are a pretty fun festivity food.

They're pretty much caramelised fruits on a stick.

Do a number on your teeth I would imagine if you ate too many though.

Caramel, Peanut-covered apples, Best part of the fall.

It comes with its own stick!

And grilled banana on a stick is the worst. Well, cooked fruit in general have an unbearable texture, but banana is the worst, it's kind of leathery, yet gooey and spongy and it bursts in your mouth and tastes like burnt sugar. And if it's on a stick you have to eat it fast or catch it in your hands when it falls apart.

Wow, what a lovely waste of resources.

Steak on a Stake! One of the best things about going to RennFest.

(Also the giant smoked turkey legs, agreeing with IQ on that one.)

mauve 05-28-2010 07:18 PM

Rick, is that picture from the Bristol Rennaissance Faire in Wisconsin?

RickZarber 05-28-2010 07:55 PM

No, it is (allegedly) from the Maryland Renaissance Festival. I got it off of Google though, so who knows.

No, you put the frozen ice cream inside gulab jamun then batter and deepfry it.

Man deep fried ice cream is good. All the Chinese restaurants here do it, fry it in a batter of diced coconut, flour and sugar. Hey Corel, is that an Australian Chinese thing or do they do deep fried ice cream in China too?

Geminex 05-29-2010 07:49 AM

I don't think they do it in China. They do it in Germany, though. I got it once, didn't like it that much. Ice-cream, plus chocolate chip cookie dough is far superior. You bake the cookie dough slighly, scoop ice-cream on, serve it while the dough's still warm. That tase is pure love.

Why hasn't anyone linked to "This is why you're fat" yet?

Corel 05-29-2010 10:35 AM

China has got a lot of different regional foods.

Haven't seen it done before but in my experience most countries will have somewhere that offers it (even if it isn't that common). I've found battered bananas and the like before in China though which are pretty nice. Also had sweet potato that had been coated in a sugar that made it taste somewhat like candy floss.

This talk about fried foods reminds me that I haven't had a battered chocolate bar since I was a youngling. Man those were good.

Edit: Going to festivals in Scandanavian countries to eat a tonne of meat on a stick is fantastic, as previous posters have mentioned! Especially if it has crackling (pig's skin) still on it.
