Here, we rant about how unwanted spoilers have ruined our gaming experiences.
Allow me to begin this post by offering you the forewarning my friend never bothered to grant me: There are massive Valkyria Chronicles spoilers ahead. Apparently. (I'll spoiler-tag 'em so you don't have to read them and you can still read everything else.)
I mean I'm holding out hope that my friend totally lied to me just to get a rise out of me, and that the plot twist he "spoiled" turns out to be a gigantic hoax. If so, hopefully someone here who's played Valkyria Chronicles will respond to this topic and say "Snake, your friend was just bullshitting you, that plot twist doesn't happen at all" and I'll be very happy. But judging by his reaction, I doubt that's the case. So, earlier this evening, a phone conversation between me and a RL friend took place that went a little something like this: Me: "I'm so excited, I just got my PS3 back and I've been playing Valkyria Chronicles ever since. It's really starting to get good." RL Friend: "Oh, that's a great game. Phenomenal game. I played it a year or two ago. Loved it." Me: "Really? Heh, I didn't know that. I just beat Chapter Seven. Damn, that mission was tough. I had to play through it three times before I beat it." RL Friend: "Oh man! So, what'd you think about Alicia being a valkyria? That totally caught me off guard." Me: "..." RL Friend: "...What?" Me: "........." I was seething mad. That sounded like a damn good unexpected plot twist, and I had set myself up to know absolutely nothing about the game as I was playing it. Up until this point Alicia just seemed like a typical Gallian militia chick, but it turns out she was apparently working for the enemy all along! I mean I just bet there's this great epic moment where Alicia stabs Welkin in the back and says "You never asked where I was from. I've been working for the Imperials all this time," and she turns blue or something and Welkin suddenly realizes his "pseudo-girlfriend" was a traitor. And now that moment's been ruined. That moment could have defined this experience for me, and now I already know what's going to happen. Turns out my friend (according to him, anyway) thought I said mission seventeen instead of seven: however, I wouldn't be shocked if he purposely attempted to find an excuse to spoil the experience for me because he can be a real jerk when he wants to be. So, in this topic, you'll relate to my pain and share similar stories about how so-called "friends" and "acquaintances" and other sources have ruined games without giving you a proper forewarning first. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's suffered because of someone else's loose lips. (Of course, I remember in 1997 when FF7's big plot twist was spoiled for me, but I find that somewhat more permissible because the game was just so huge and that spoiler was everywhere. But this? This obscure, cute, fun little strategy RPG most people haven't heard of? Why would anyone take this away from me?) |
I had Kingdom Hearts DS plot twist spoiled for me, and the one for Birth by Sleep. I'd be upset, but
they're both the same plot twist and not really that good either.
|
Spoilers never really bothered me. If anything, I find sometimes that knowing what's going to happen accentuates its impact for me.
|
I'd be more mad about the spoilers my friend tended to heap on me if all but one of them hadn't turned out to be utter bull. The one that was actually true was that Aeris dies.
Well, I suppose that's not true. He also got it right that Rose is the Black Monster, but that was so obvious that it barely counted. |
I usually don't believe anything about a game's plot that a friend of mine says ever unless I see it my self since they have been wrong before. However me and my friends have different interests when it comes to games and are respectfully about each other when it comes to spoilers so we usually never have this kind of problem.
Although learning nearly everything about FFX (largely due to my friend and my uncle both playing the game when I visited them each a few times) has prevented me from ever buying it. Not that it really bugs me that much. |
I don't have a problem with this, as this occurs mainly when I spoil the game for myself.
Point in case, Bioshock - I was convinced that I wouldn't be able to play it, owning a PS3 before it came out for the 360, and thinking that "Wow, that looks totally awesome." So I looked it up and found out about the "Would you kindly" bit. I was like "That's really cool." It was an awesome game, though, so I'm not complaining. But yeah, most of my woes come from me spoiling the games for meself. |
I feel abit bad for you Seil, since what made that twist great is it didn't even occur to you. Kind of like that lingering sense you got in Shadow of the Colossus, the nagging feeling that something just isn't right
|
Well, most of what I choose to spoil for myself are scenes from awesome games, like Bioshock, and it doesn't matter to me as much because it's... well... Bioshock.
|
Doesn't bother me at all, really.
|
You guys actually spoil a lot of games for me. I read your spoiler tag stuff, thinking that it's a game I'll probably never play, and then three months later I inevitably end up buying it for myself already knowing the plot twists because listening to you guys talk about it made it sound really awesome.
I'm pretty sure that happened with Shadow of the Colossus, at least for the very ending of the game. I don't mind, though, since Shadow of the Collossus is fantastic. |
I'm actually going to buy Okami the next time I order a game off Amazon because of spoilers I read for it this week. I just gotta figure out something else (that I haven't already pre-ordered) to get with it so I can get free shipping.
|
I spoil most stuff by myself. Mostly when I go to tvtropes and start reading and reading...and reading. My RL friends are nice enough not to spoil things for me :). And you guys, sometimes spoil things but luckily for me it's not from games I want to play, or am already playing.
|
But I survive.
I'm pretty damn good at yelling at people if I think they are in the process of or will be revealing a spoiler that I don't want to know, so I've avoided them unless I have actively sought them out myself. Man, I don't know how people can sit back and let that happen -- and I know there are situations where it just happens, I'm not talkin' about that. I had a friend sit there and stare at me as I made a
Snape Kills Dumbledore
joke during one of the movies [we had rented it as I had still not seen it; they had seen them all and, as far as I know still, own the books] while his girlfriend - who knew the joke and the spoiler - and he let it happen -- I mean, the build-up to the punchline was very obvious, as I was aiming for lame.
A side effect is that sometimes I can't/won't read threads here even though I feel like I should as per my responsibilities. It's a conundrum! |
To show off the battle system, a friend loaded up a copy of KotOR 1 that was right before the final set of speeches with the main villain. At this point in time, I'd heard a lot of good things about KotOR, but didn't have an XBox and so hadn't bothered playing it. The speech wouldn't have really spoiled anything for me, had my friend not freaked out upon realizing the villain calls you by your name. So yeah, I wouldn't have caught on (Or really remembered it), unless my friend hadn't reacted the way he had; kinda ruined KotOR's story for me, but I never ended up caring about the story and have more fun abusing the battle system so it all worked out for me.
Actually though, I've been pretty lucky avoiding spoilers for most games. Like, I know most of the spoilers for Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, but I've yet to actually play those so I don't consider it a problem >.> Edit: WAIT I JUST THOUGHT OF ONE. Kingdom Hearts 2. I was a member of some forum right around the time KH2 got released, and there was one asshole who's sig read GOOFY DIES AT THE END OF KINGDOM HEARTS 2. Now anybody who's played this game knows that something VERY similar to this happens mid-way through the game, but that he gets better. I played through the game, dredding every single cutscene near the end of the game because I was afraid this was going to happen and I would be mad. |
Yeah, I sometimes get spoilers, erm, spoiled before I play the game. FFX, Bioshock, SotC, inFamous, etc, but it doesn't really bother me strangely.
The only times I haven't had stuff spoiled was for Heavy Rain and the ending of Half Life 2; Ep 2, which are prety much the greatest plot twists in gaming, so it's all good. |

I don't mind it all that much, though, even when I end up knowing all the main plot twists in advance I just keep watch for how they set things up, and that's fun as well. Or to put it another way, if an entire game stops being worth playing just because you know one plot point, it's probably not that great a game to begin with. (Although I'd argue Bioshock is an exception to that - great game either way but not knowing it in advance makes it much better still.) |
I had a friend completely spoil Mother 3 for me. Like out of spite, he has never even played the game before. He looked up the spoilers on the internet cause I mentioned trying to stay spoiler free.
Then as I am playing the game, running through the burning forest he busts in my room yelling " HINAWA DIES, CLAUS DIES, PORKY IS THE PIG KING, CLAUS IS THE MASKED MAN, FASAAD IS THE LAST..." He never got that last bit out cause I hit him in the face with a complete copy of the Lord of the Rings. |
I've never been too bothered by spoilers. If some amazing twist is going to happen, KOTOR's famous twist for example, and I know about it in advance I feel great about the build up to something I already know is going to happen. To me, if the game was too relient on the twist itself and doesn't stand up to a second playthrough to enjoy the plot a second time, then it just wasn't a good plot.

Someone told me Aeris dies.

I'm pretty sure at this point Bulbapedia had changed the face of Pokemon gaming forever. Back when I was playing the old Gen I games we didn't have some crazy website that gave so much detailed info about the game we were playing that each and every step we took along each route was analyzed and documented. I find it really hard now that I'm finally moving forward with the newer games to play for more than an hour without siting next to my computer with that stupid site open telling me where every thing is and how it all works. I've not had a singe surprise yet since I started Fire Red because every Route is mapped out to the Nth degree.
