I see things like this and think, "Hey, at least it's not the Open Source Boob Project." |
i wanna say a thousand things... but the only coherent thought i can form after seeing that list is "this is dumb"... so...
This is dumb. |

I get the feeling most of the people who voted didn't quite understand what they were voting for.
|
Jesus Christ, why did I look at it.
Fallout 3. The ending nobody liked. The ending that everybody agreed was stupid, pointless, and against the spirit of the game. The ending the developers fixed with DLC by having a character point out it was stupid. Is on the list of greatest endings ever. Conversely, Metal Gear Solid 3. The ending that is generally agreed to be the high point of the game. That reduces me to tears when I watch it. That cleverly homages and pulls apart both action films and power fantasies*. Is lower than Super fucking Mario Brothers. What the everloving fuck. *Spare me your lolwuts, I know I'm pretentious. |
Sonic the Hedgehog is in the list... for fuck's sake!
Also No game that has an "open ending" (as in "in case we can sell you another one of this" should EVER belong in a list of the better ENDINGS. It's not a fucking ending, it's a cliffhanger! |
Guinness gamer edition is known for being cancerous shit and basically all around stupid.
Nothing out of place, nothing to see here, move along. (also I too teared the hell up at the end of MGS3, holy fuck man I refuse to believe the same Kojima that did MGS4 did MGS3) |
Wheres mah Tetris, dammit.
Fine, I'll forgive you for Tetris but, not having the Windows Solitaire is bad. |
Man, I've always thought the Guiness World Record books were generally trite and superficial. I mean what the hell. I have spent the most time out of anyone posting on internet forums under the name 'Geminex'. I should get a mention.
|
Wait, how is this a record? And can we extend it to other media?
I'm voting "The castle" for best book ending and "Monty Python's holy grail" for best film ending. |
The entry is stupid to begin with. You can't quantify the quality of a game ending. You can't have a fucking world record for "best ending ever"!
|
Honestly, I really can't make myself get worked up about this. There are a LOT of terrible, terrible game opinions out there (Example: Did you know some people like Suikoden?!), even after accepting that video game opinions are subjective in the first place. When something like Guinness World Records, of all things, tries to have video game opinions, you're pretty much guaranteeing they're going to be worse opinions than normal. As a result, this is just kinda, "Well yeah the opinions are terrible. So?" to me.
|
People need to start making giant cookies and walking backwards for extended periods of time again. The Guinness World Records office must be getting bored.
|
Quality is in the eye of the beholder.
And it seems most have catarats. |

They put Kingdom Hearts's ending higher than MGS3?
Wait, they put Kingdom Hearts's ending higher than Kingdom Hearts II's ending? They put Assassin's Creed's ending higher than Assassin's Creed II? They seriously thought that no ending other than the scientists leaving the room and you seeing symbols was better than a plot twist that made the player character go "What the fuck?" http://i42.tinypic.com/28qvuw4.png |

... Liz Liz Liz did you Did you go there Do you know what you've done Do you know how you've broken my heart Suikoden 2 is the best RPG ever shut your face Also the original Suikoden, while not Suikoden 2, was still above average |
We need to do a holy purge by fire, removing all of the "gamers" who can't go deeper than CoD and Battlefield.
|
Actually, basically everything gaming that isn't done by legitimate up-to-your-balls-in-games-that-were-on-sale-on-steam gamers is shit. Like, get someone like Penny Arcade to do a hostile takeover of these award bullshits.

Isn't Call of Duty's ending the multiplayer? It was pretty rad okay!
I am glad Portal was in the top 10. Arguing over lists like this, though, is stupid. Nobody's will be the same. I imagine we can just mostly agree Black Ops being on top is ridiculous, but on the other hand, AMERICA IS DOMINATE. |

Liz I want you to return that card I sent you Because I need to burn it Seriously how is it possible that our gaming preferences agree on so much, yet disagree on this |
But the people beyond the first superficial layer of mainstream gaming WOULD NEVER FUCKING AGREE ON A BEST LIST OF ANYTHING. EVER.
We bicker far too much and have different opinions on too many things. Honestly I think our priority should be purging the VGA because I find that far more offensive (and hilariously bad) then this list. |

Listen, say all you want about opinions being opinions, but there are two fucking Call of Duty games in the Top 10, I'm pretty sure that has to objectively be wrong.
Like the only game in that Top 10 that had an ending worthy of best Top Ten endings would be Red Dead Redemption. I mean, there are probably ten games in there with great endings (maybe) that if you rearranged this would be in a decent top 10, including MGS3 as well, like, switch it with MGS4 and it starts to look a little better. But look. This list doesn't include Final Fantasy VI. It doesn't include Final Fantasy Tactics. This list doesn't include motherfucking MOTHER 3. This list is therefore invalid. Guinness should stick to re-reporting Twin Galaxies scores because they apparently cannot handle anything else regarding video games (except maybe like, biggest NES controller or whatever. They have a big giant one they built, you know. It's some bigass shit). EDIT: I'm going to go with the author of the article in assuming that whoever the 13,000 voters were, the majority confused "best ending" with either "best game" or "favorite game". Like some of these do not even have real ending-type endings, or the endings are utterly trite (Super Mario Galaxy 2, for instance). Just looking at the end results shows that something was pretty skewed in how the voters made their decision: either they were confused about the question, or their experience with video games is woefully inadequate to be voting on this. |
the other issue is to really judge "best ending" you must compare it to all endings. Even the most avid gamers has only legitimately (by that I mean actually beaten the game because perception of an ending is based alot on the lead in to it) seen a fraction of all the game endings.

Notice how no game was there before 2007...
|
So many endings that could have been there instead.
Secret of Mana, KH 358/2 Days, Terranigma, Mother 3 (again)... |
Top Ten Endings of All Time

Mother 3 clearly comes before Mother 3. Quote:
All I know is that each game manages to have more characters than Chrono Cross and STILL manage to make them more interesting than a giant pink dog or a cyborg named Grobyc. |

It's not as good as I pretend it is, nor as good as Snake seems to think it is, but didn't strike me as GODAWFUL as Liz says it is, either :D
It was very...average (in my opinion). I enjoyed it at the time because at the time I was still a jRPG fan. Soooo....I would buy it at your own risk. |
I always found Suikoden to be very meh.
It always felt like a case of why play this when I could play any of the better JRPGs that were coming out at the time, or even a generation before. I actually don't remember much of it at all now that I think of it, I just remembered you could recruit a lot of guys to your party. |

If we're talking about Suikoden as a series, then Suikoden 2, Suikoden 3 and Suikoden 5 were all great games (2 being the jewel of the bunch, though 5 isn't too far behind) and the series has a better track record over the course of its lifetime than Final Fantasy does (the FF series only 'wins' by virtue of having more overall titles, but the best three Suikoden games are better than the best three FFs -- disclaimer of course, this is just my opinion.) Also, the original Suikoden benefits tremendously from the existence of Suikoden 2. Like Suikoden on its own merits was just okay, but as a prologue to Suikoden 2, which continues the stories of several of its major characters, it has far greater merit. |
I've only played the first one, I didn't even know they got further along than three :D.
I always wanted to play the others, but it was one of those things where I never found the time. |
