How many games did you buy because LPs
I say let's plays promote sales for one reason, cause I have personally bought several because of a let's play. Especially indie games. I wanted to see how many people have done the same.
A ground rule, this is a list of games where a let's play or similar video was the deciding point on whether or not you got the game. Meaning before those videos you either had no interest in the game or didn't even know it existed. Reason for this exception is then I think it would fall under the "try before you buy" category and I am more curious about it as a marketing tool. Some I bought purely thanks to Lets Plays Little Inferno Bro Force Minecraft Saint's Row 3 |
I don't buy many games, though.

Mass Effect Final Story Eternal Darkness (this is older, and I'm unsure if this counts: it's actually due to a "live" Let's Play that I watched a friend do, instead of one of my own.) That's the top of my head. EDIT: also, I don't think this counts, as I haven't actually put money down on it, yet, but I'm looking to buy the Baldr's Gate series exclusively due to Let's Plays of the thing. I would never have attempted such if it weren't for that. I'm kind of waiting to run into a good deal when I have funds for Planescape: Torment as well, though I've heard that doesn't run on modern boxes, and I'm about as adroit at making such things work as a Monkey is at writing Shakespeare (so give me a few million Mulligans and I'll get there in the end). |
The Last of Us, Metal Gear Rising and a few others on the Two Best Friends channel, will possibly buy a few more that showed up in recent shitstorm of scariness stuff.

The main reason i like Two Best Friends play as a reference for games to buy (and avoid) is how they treat the game and how they show knowledge of what they are doing. They know how to break a game apart or explain why it deserves praise in current context. Which a lot of Lets Plays don't do (some just drool over the game because that's what they are playing).
I can't really say that there many games they "made me buy" by watching, but i know for a fact quite a few i decided not to buy because of their videos and let's plays. They just shoed me why the thing was shitty, so i saved some cash for other better games. ...still i'm just waiting for half a chance to get Metal Gear Rising on PC.... |
Minecraft
Dishonored Skyrim The Walking Dead The Wolf Among Us Gunpoint Trials Evolution XCOM: Enemy Unknown Trine Civ 5: Brave New World Rogue Legacy Orcs Must Die FTL Alpha Protocol So yeahhh, I'd say LP's are really, really effective in terms of making me want to play something for myself. As long as devs structure a game so that gameplay is fun enough and story elements are varied enough, you're probably going to want to try a game for yourself. |
I can only think of Tower of Guns and Race the Sun that I bought solely based on LPs. But that's also the only games I've bought voluntarily in over a year.

Finally completing a dissertation does tend to drastically narrow your focus.

Unlike when I was a child, I tend to only purchase a game if I know I really want to play it -- if I am strongly interested in its single-player and completing its story or campaign(s), or if I know I will come back to it again and again (online or offline). Thanks to LPs, I have been able to enjoy plenty of games that I honestly do think are good games but have had no desire to own overall. Maybe if rentals were still a thing I'd actively play more games myself. But I did download and start playing Star Trek Online as soon as it went free to play as a result of Poptartsninja's LP. edit: Re-reading this, it sounds like I don't play that many games. Compared to many of you, that may be true, but I still would say that's not a fair representation of me. I just don't buy games based on LPs, even if they are immensely entertaining. |
None in particular. The closest would be Hotline Miami, but the LP mostly just made me aware it existed. I didn't really follow it to its conclusion.

Scribblenauts Unlimited (Thanks to Two Best Friends Play)
Ghostbusters: the Video Game Don't Starve (Thanks to Sips of the Yogscast) |
Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Luckily, I only watched a few sections of the game. Would ruin it otherwise.
I would also say MGR: REVENGEANCE, except the PC version seems to be stuck in limbo. But if it ever comes out, I'm definitely getting it. |
A solid decade of Poké-sobriety down the drain.
Gigi D.G.'s P4 comic and DFM's VtM:B led me to buy both of those games. I'd also like to take this opportunity to blame Nuzlocke for my relapse back into Pokémon games.

FTL because, seeing Pip fail at it was wonderful.
I'll eventually get Papers Please because of another friend I saw playing it. Also, X-CCOM: EU because Max "Nitro" Harakiri's legend has to live on; when a GoTY version comes out because I GOTTA HAVE ALL THE THINGS...unless 2K pulls out another GoTY with mostly but, not everything again .-. |
Saint's Row 3
Terraria. And I've played a number of NES titles because of "Let's NOT Plays." |
