What? I'm a fighter. I really do like swords.
I took the priviledge of starting the I like swords thread again.
Anyways, do continue. |
(Wow, a thread opened and closed in two days. Many xiphophiles here [for those who don't have have a ancient greek-english dictionary handy, xipho means sword])
|
Whoever thought this conversation would get this long. Jeebus.
Anyway: Yes, Priest, I realize that they are more predictable, but when used with a sword that is capable of both can be quite effective. You do a bunch of slashes and then a thrust or what have you. That way they're both less predictable (assuming you don't give away what you're doing beforehand) and a bit harder to get the sword around to parry it. Which is why I prefer swords, like the rapier, which are made for both slashes AND thrusts. Either one has it's weak points, and god knows I hate limitations. |
Just out of curiosity, what is everyone's favorite type of sword? For me it would have to be greatswords or kukris (even though they aren't actually swords).
|
I think I just said... although I prefer the more modern and slightly shorter versions, because they're a bit faster. I also like wakizashis.
|
Lightsabres.
What? |
Need I say rapier? Next in line Claymore, followed closely by Bastard Sword, Longsword, Broadsword, then Falchion. I don't know enough about Japaneese swords to comment on them, although I know of their craft and almost preternatural sharpness. I am sure to recieve countless people attempting to correct my ignorance on the subject.

My favorite weapon isn't a sword, since I like less practical (And probably crappy in combat) weapons... Sword wise... I'm going to say a Machete
|
If I had to pick, as I do like so many, I'd go for the bastard/long sword. The hand and a half types, since they are so very versitile. You can use them one handed or two handed. On horseback or foot, and with or without a shield. Big enough to intimidate but not so huge as to be cumbersome, and one can even thrust with one to a certain extent.
PS. I forgot the best part about the wide slashing weapons like the bastard sword: room for engraving/cool patterns on the blade. I'll bet part of the reason the rapiers got these really elaborate hand guards over time was to compensate for their skinny ass blades. What good is it to have a cool damascus pattern or nifty engraving and/or inlays if the blade's a glorified knitting needle? :D |
Well, when that Vorpal knitting needle +5 of everything slaying starts poking you in battle I doubt there'll be much of an issue with its adornments...
Being a larger guy I favor bastard swords. Also because of my email. |
