Lucasarts runs an adventure game poll...

Thus, loyal adventure game fans, show your colors and take part! I want a decent adventure game in the near future, and that all depends on YOU!

Whatever game the produce, if they bring Jolee and HK-47 back I'll buy it.

I'll take it that you haven't played one of Lucasarts classic adventure games, as KOTOR does not fit into that genere.

Here's a pair to look into...

Curse of Monkey Island:

Full Throttle:

There are also, the more recent titles of Grim Fandiago & Escape from Monkey Island, but I'm rather turned off by the new 3D-ish interface, and suspect it wouldn't appeal to a newcomer to the adventure game genre.

... if you, however, do like these adventures, there's ultimately no way around Grim Fandango.

Bestgameever.

And if you want to play one of their older games on a modern OS, you might want to take a look at ScummVM.

Actually, it looks like ScummVM is rapidly becoming an all-purpose adventure game emulating system. They're even working on getting the Broken Sword (a.k.a. Circle of Blood) games running on it. Kickass. I wonder how long it'll be before I can play The Longest Journey in Linux...

Probably not that long since the ScummVM team is actually receiving support from the companies that produced most of the best adventure games.

You can get a full copy of Sam and Max Hit the Road if you go and buy the "Armed and Dangerous" demo, and supposedly it's "updated to run on Windows". My guess? Some sort of frontend for ScummVM, since it runs the game perfectly.

In addition to SCUMMVM, there's also some other Utilities you might want to check out:

Of note, there's DosBOX, which is a Dos emulator w/ Soundblaster support.

Then there's VDMSound which gives Soundblaster support for Windows 2000/NT/XP. Which doesn't help me much, as I use ME and I'm too paranoid to upgrade or trying going backwards...

There's also DosFix for users of Win ME...

I personally can't comment, as while I did get as far as Downloading it, I never got around to installling the thing to see what its like...

SWB
- Since this has turned into a topic for adventure games, in general, here's a good link for some freebies. Haven't tried any myself, but I only found out about this recently...

Also, since it was a *REALLY* good game, and I want to see the sequel (already in the workings), I recommend Runaway: A Road Adventure

Plus, there's of course: The Longest Journey

SWB, Iguana, thanks guys... maybe I'll get my Day of the Tentacle to run properly with that stuff. Stupid sound bug.

Atronflame 12-28-2003 03:05 PM

I wanna play another Grim Fandago. That game was bad-ass.

Meister 12-28-2003 03:13 PM

I agree, but I also think no direct sequel could ever be as great as the original. As we see with Monkey Island, too many sequels make the story go sour...

I wouldn't object to another "game noir" in the Land of the Dead, though, not necessarily including Manny or anyone of GF's cast, but with similar atmosphere and... stuff.
