Movies of 2003
Post what you think to be the best and worst movies of the past year.
Best (no particular order): Rules of Attraction After a novel (or short story?) by Bret Easton Ellis; a satire on college life. Features pretty dark humor, interesting editing (parts of the movie run literally backwards), a great soundtrack and the funniest suicide scenes ever. Even for non-cynics. 28 Days Later What I expected was good old zombie-splatter-action, what I got was a sinister social drama about the human nature. I was quite content with that. Kill Bill Vol.1 Tarantino. Nuff said. Oh, and blood. Lots of it. Might be the best thing I came across in the ol' movie theater this year, except for my paycheck. X-Men 2 Very fitting sequel with, as in the first, the right mix of action and story. And don't let anyone fool you, that is not proper German what Nightcrawler speaks. Worst (aka biggest disappointments): Once Upon a Time in Mexico While it does have good moments (=all scenes involving Johnny Depp and some instances of Rodriguez' weird humor showing up), the film itself was a horrible mess with far too many characters and subplots. Desperado is still great, though. Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions Reloaded promised far too much for Revolutions to keep. Deliberately, methinks. Dreamcatcher Worst. Ending. Ever. The more disappointing after the most accurate book-to-movie-port ever, up to I think an hour into it. And I know people will read this and wonder "What about Return of the King? What about Last Samurai?" Not seen either yet; I'm not particularly interested in RotK and LS has yet to hit theaters over here. But I've a feeling it will show up in my Best Movies of 2004. |
BEST
The Matrix:Reloaded/Revoultions Hands down their action beats the rest LOTR: ROTK Soo actiony and dramtic and sad Last Samuri Just cool POTC: One thing it has Captain Jack Sparow Worst Kill Bill vol1: Just soo stupid X Men 2- It was really dull |
ne one forget like those two horrible movies Gigli and Honey by far the worst all year guys
|
Best:
LOTR: ROTK--Come on, its Lord of the Rings! But seriously, it was another beautiful movie and I really enjoyed every minute of it. X-men 2--A lot of fans of the comic book told me they didn't like the movies, but I've been reading since I was a kid and I still enjoyed both movies. Especially this one because Pyro was always one of my favorites (even if he is slightly modified for the movie). Kill Bill Vol. 1--Even though it seemed like there was very little exposition compared to the copious amount of blood, I really liked this film. I'm a collector of Japanese imports (i.e. Battle Royale, Suicide Circle, etc.) so it was cool to see a film like this come from an American director. Mystic River--It's a very complex crime drama, but it has this cool ominous feel to it. I just liked the way the story was told. Worst: Cabin Fever--If you haven't see this, just rent it and see what I'm talking about. At first I thought it was just going to be another random teen horror flick and then it turned out to be even worse that that. Why? Becuase it threw in a stupid twist at the end in an attempt to save the plot, or lack thereof. Texas Chainsaw Massacre Remake--Uh...what was wrong with the first one? The gritty film was partly what made it so scary. It's always been one of my favorite horror movies, but the remake just didn't have what the first one has (even if it was filmed by the same cinematographer). Timeline--such a terrible disappointment after the awesome Michael Chriton novel. I don't know...it just seemed like the medieval setting from Timeline was something out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but it was trying to be serious. Gods and Generals--I love war movies, but this was just terrible. It was slow, boring, and the actors couldn't convey the emotion that the story deserved. |
BEST-
Return of The King: With the amazing effects, awesome actors, its bound to be the best. Even if I only remember it being so awesome cuz the dude jumped off a cliff while on fire, and the thing with the elephant. ....and if I spent the 4 hours watching the movie sitting next to my girlfriend and holding her hand... eheh... >_> 28 Days Later: Dude, this movie scared the living shit out of me. And not many movies manage to accomplish that. I actually had to leave the room during the movie, it was so disturbing. Blah. Death death death and lots of thinking involved during it. But it was a friggin awesome movie. Bruce Almighty: Funny as HELL. Funny funny funny. I loved the part where he was messing with the anchors face. I have never laughed so hard in my life. I was actually struggling to breathe when it was over. Worst- Dreamcatcher: I had the strange fortune of reading the book the week before the movie came out. It was fine for a little while, and yes, it seemed like it was getting good, and the aliens were... alright, at best. But you lost a lot of the characters emotions and some of the characters actually went insane in the book, but it seemed like nothing in the movie. Although, after the aliens started coming in, and the military quarantined everyone, the movie started to suck. The ending was horrible. It absolutely smashed Duddits. For one he didnt get killed by an alien, and he didnt turn into one to face off against the other. I mean, dude, it was all psychological. But then again its a movie and its kinda hard to portray that, but still. Not exactly the best movie, but a good book. I cant really think of any bad movies, I didnt watch a whole lot this year... but yeah. |
Best:
The usuals: ROTK, X2, Kill Bill...yadda yadda, great stuff Scary Movie 3: I laughed so hard, Diet coke splurted out of my nose... Worst: Cat in the Hat: NO MIKE, NOOOOOOOO! The Core:...Wha? House of the Dead: Cmon, the game is all about shooting anything that moves, you cant write a screenplay outta that. Haunted Mansion: NO EDDIE, NOOOOOOO! |
Best, in order (And this one will surprise some people):
Runaway Jury: Whoever wrote this one was a genius. There wasn't a single wasted frame in this. The fact that I think that it was based on a load of bull is meaningless. Return of the King: It's Lord of the Rings, and it takes a profoundly disturbed mind to ruin Lord of the Rings. 'Nuff said. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Despite the blatant, burning cliches, this was, in my supremely arrogant opinion, far and away the best comic-based movie I've ever seen. And they have a pimpin' tank. Worst, also in order: Timeline: The scriptwriter should be shot. Chris could have seriously competed with Tidus (of FFX fame) in a pussiness contest. There are substantial differences between Old French (Which was spoken in 14th century France) and Modern French (which was spoken in the movie). Likewise with Middle and Modern English. Either Matrix movie: These were hella badass, but they sucked. Period. I don't watch many movies. :( |
Best:
Kill Bill-- intentional cliches in every scene, best fight scenes ever, crazy storyline that isn't SUPPOSED to make sense. Best soundtrack ever. Great movie. RotK-- the best of the books is a great movie, despite the tacked in stuff. Nearly 4 hours of awesome. X-Men 2-- Nightcrawler. Nightcrawler. Terminator 3-- Awesome. Just plain good. Arnold's the comic relief, and the story does something that just isn't done in hollywood.... it surprises you. Overrated, but still cool: Last Samurai... Great Story, ruined in parts by Cruise's bad acting. And the cinematography is excellent. PotC: for a disney pirate movie, it still manages to be entertaining. However, this movie is strictly a kids movie. Flat out bad: 28 days later-- this movie blows. The plot is filled with gaping holes, and the "disease" concept is downright retarded. And those crazy monkeys were better actors than the entire human cast. Not scary at all. Matrix Sequels-- I don't think I need to elaborate here. We can only take so much melodrama, DBZ style fighting, and black leather. And Gili and Glitter aren't movies. They're abominations. They shouldn't even exist, let alone be discussed by civilized humans. |
Best:
LotR - RotK : duh Something's Gotta Give : I like Jack and Diane, put 'em together and its almost heaven (minus the whipcream) Pirates of the Carribean : will probably get a best picture nomination and best actor for johny depp. it's about time, he deserves it. Worst: the Matrix movies : enough said 28 days later : beyond sucked, as in they had to invent a whole new catagory of sucking just for this film Timeline : I hate that stupid boy/man! my friend tricked me into seeing it, i didnt know he was in the movie, he still hasnt learned how to act. The Hulk : yeah, aside from destroying San Fran, this had nothing good going for it. |
Best: Bad Santa was cool, and I don't remember watching any other movies
Worst: Was "The Ring" this year? I hated that movie! |
