Forum Trends.

Shiney and I were just looking through some folders of mine. I tend to collect random pictures, and we came across a file with capcom cards.

Anyone remember this? Or the whole nickname based 'Ninja' or 'Bean' trends? Or the avatar based trend of 'Pirates'?

I'm pretty sure some people don't have a clue of what I'm talking about, but of those who do, do you miss it?

Any suggestion on new forum trends? It's all just for fun!

I remember the capcom cards. I thought it was pretty nifty... I would've liked it for everyone to be somewhat standarized in their avatar, but still unique.

Which reminds me... I got to change my title to 'Excellent Vigalante'

Yeah, Shiney and I spoke about how we miss the EZboard format of not allowing people to choose their own custom titles. I remember how priviledged and 'loved' we felt when Brian eventually deemed us worthy of title changes, though I cannot for the life of me remember what mine was.

As a little more of an explaination, what I'd like to call a forum trend is a certain thing that users pick up on and then all take in within their user CP.

For example, the 'Bean' trend was changing our names to something with the word 'bean' in it and changing our avatars to suit. Mine was 'Rai Bean' and I had an avatar with a woman holding a floating black jellybean. Shiney's was 'Bean McJustice' and he too changed his also. (He recalls that our friend Brandon was the 'Baron of Beanery', his 'arch nemesis'.)

A lot of that kind of stuff I usually percived as over my head or some kind of in joke...

One big thing right now is to quote other users in your sig... Maybe thats something thats always been done but it seems pretty prevelant right now.

The title thing is nice the way it is for me... It allows for more uniqueness amoung the users profile and such... Otherwise, it seems to act as some kind of gauge of your worth, like the postcount can be in some forums.

RaiRai 07-03-2005 05:37 AM

Yeah, quoting people in your sig is a regular thing. I kind've miss being able to have a picture based signature, as I was prone to having a vast assortment back in the day.

And I do agree with you on the 'gauging of worth' comment, but those people who have made themselves part of the community probably wouldn't take long to gain a custom title at all around here.

Demon with a Glass Hand 07-03-2005 05:46 AM

Ah, yes. Card Fighter Avatars.

I remember when I was trying to get as many people to use them as possible. I had a blurb about it in my sig. That was when I first started out here.

Didn't catch on at all. Gawds I'm a lousy trend setter ...

Skyshot 07-03-2005 03:27 PM

On another forum, the administrator asks that no sig picture be more than 100 pixels tall. That wouldn't be such a bad requirement here if space were the only issue, but I'm not complaining.

Here's a trend idea: Every week, the people involved dedicate their accounts to a particular, reasonably active forumite. By "dedicate" I mean title, location, signature, and possibly avatar in some way referring to that person -- i.e. "Location: at [forumite]'s feet." Title: Servant of [forumite]. Everyone involved would have to come up with a different role. Just be a lousy suck-up for that person. Next week, someone else takes the celebrity role.

It'd be interesting to see what would happen, at least. It would certainly give the NP Member Comic/et cetera thread an interesting twist.

That's a really interesting idea, Skyshot. I'd be up for it. We'll idolize you first since it was your idea.

Well, there was that time Shiney had CT as his jester. That was pretty amusing.

Say Rai, if you got to pick someone who'll let you mess with their SN and title and stuff, who would you like?

synkr0nized 07-03-2005 11:16 PM

I remember more of the older ones than newer. I frequented the boards more often, especially in the TWC days, before the move here. This was probably because of my time spent with clanBOB, and TWC made it very conveniant to enjoy both communities.

This combines with my recent lack of participation in most things Internet related. Unfortunately.

I would say the stint of moderator-powered name changes was quite amusing, of more recent events. I never was interested in the cards, though I applaud the fact that such a large number of people banded together with them.
