The 'Rep' disscussion
Didn't think this was silly enough to put in 'off-topic'.
I was curious about the habits of forumites when it comes to giving out reputation points. What does someone have to do to earn a positive rep from you? What about negative rep? Does their *actual* reputation around the forums affect that decision? Do you rep much at all? Feel free to branch this out into a disscussion about forum behavior in general... The online commuinty is an interesting thing to observe. |
I rep lots - it probably averages out to about 1/day. This is my criteria:
Positive Rep - Thoughtful, reasonable, rational, logical, polite, passionate, honest, funny, helpful Negarep - Sheer stupidity, self-absorbedness, hypocrisy, using deep |_337$|>34|<, cockiness, inability to admit own faults. I'm far more likely to give out positive rep than negative rep. I try not to be influenced by who's saying whatever it is I'm repping (read: it doesn't matter how much rep you already have, I still have the same standards). How does the rep system work, again? /me has heard multiple answers on how the amount you give gets raised. |
I rep a lot. Atleast I have done so lately. I just like giving out rep. And receiving it too... (Hint, hint...)
I give rep for funniness, good posts, opinions backed with fact etc. But I also give rep for just being on the forums and/or for being a friend. Simple. |
I normally don't rep much, but I'll give rep if a post if particularly informative or if it's info/a link that I haven't seen before, but it has to be something I'd want to know anyway. For example, I repped someone for posting a link to the Serenity trailer back when it first was available online, since I hadn't seen it before, and I'm a big Firefly fan, so it was something I wouldv'e sought out had I known about it.
Did that make sense? Bottom line is, I don't rep much at all, maybe 2-3 times a month. |
Sometimes I randomly rep people, but if I go on a rep spree, I try to find something that I feel deserves the rep, be it positive or negative rep. The negative rep that I give out is few and far between, but the criteria is about the same as Link1209's for negative. For positive, if it's informative, helpful, impressive (art stuff for that one, mainly), well thought out (discussion posts for this one, usually), hilarious on a 'R.O.F.L.' scale (and yes, I have given out rep for that quite a few times), or bein' a friend, or an all-around nice person. I've also given out positive rep in a supportive kind of way.

If you have 0-49 posts, you'll have zero rep points. 50-999 is one rep point, 1000-1999 is 2, 2000-2999 is 3, 3000-3999 is 4, etc. If you have 10-99 rep, you won't get this rep bonus. 100-199 rep will give you an extra point to give out, 200-299 will give you two more points (cumulatively speaking) to give out, etc. You can give out an extra point of rep per year that you've been a member here. For example, I can give out four points of rep. Two points for post count, and two points for amount of rep I have. Dante can give out nine points of rep. Seven points for post count, 1 point for amount of rep he has, and 1 point for being here for more than a year. See how it works? As for the 'levels', they're as follows: User is infamous around these parts -50 User can only hope to improve -25 User has a little shameless behaviour in the past -10 User is an unknown quantity at this point 0 User is on a distinguished road 10 User will become famous soon enough 20 User has a spectacular aura about 35 User is a jewel in the rough 50 User is just really nice 75 User is a glorious beacon of light 100 User is a name known to all 150 User is a splendid one to behold 225 User has much to be proud of 325 User has a brilliant future 450 User has a reputation beyond repute 600 These levels brought to you by shiney. |
I rarely ever rep, but when I do rep it's almost always good. I tend to give negative rep to people who act like complete retards, such as when I have to give a warning or a ban. Not always though.
Rep itself has nothing on this forum, no power, no prestige. It is for all intents and purposes a popularity contest, even affecting *sniffle* my own wife. When a person is seen going too rep crazy they are to be put in the brand new "no rep" category, with their current rep deleted and their ability to give/receive gone. Whether or not we restore users is based on how we feel, but once placed in that category it's not likely that a return will happen. Cloud was right on the sheer numbers, though. |
I generally don't give out rep too often, but when I do, it usually starts with a post so high on the awesomosity list that it simply cannot go unrepped. Then that makes me feel generous, and I'll hand out a few other reps over the next few days for just plain cool stuff.

I give rep for people who do stuff for me, i.e., make an avatar that won't load into the system for no logical reason actually work. If I find a post hilarious, I occasionally give rep for those too.
I've received rep for various reasons -- avatars I've made (often blue rep since the reppers didn't have 50 posts) are probably the most common source; the asylum comic netted me three consecutive posireps, and this got me two in slightly less than in hour. I've also gotten rep for things like changing my name and avatar from Sarda, being a good spriter, turning 17, and offering advice to BMG! EDIT: You choose a clever way to control me from afar, Nikose. But I'm keeping the courier. Also, it's dark gray, not black. |
I've only gotten rep from the following:
1:Avatar Making 2:Meaningless green bars. (You'd have to ask Osterbaum) 3:The "Don't you just hate that?" thread. 4:Me wishing videogamerz2000 good luck with his ordeal with lukemia. 5:My comic. |
Well, as I posted in the former forum, I have standards for what I'll rep for. A certain etiquette. But generally, if you amuse me, or post something I find particularly relevant, whether I agree with it or not, I'll toss a point your way.
I've never neg-repped, and have only been neg-repped by someone who thought it would be cool to try to disguise a flame as one. Hope he's enjoying his well-earned ban. Fair warning to any negs out there, the mods ARE watching. Play nice. Basically, if I like your avvie, or thought your post was cool or made sense... or both... or if I happen to have a whatever moment, someone will get rep. Happens about... maybe twice a week. I dunno... I keep seeing the same people over and over.. and dammit! I have to toss rep to others first before they can get rep again. There's a question for ya, Cloud... how much rep do you have to toss others before you can rep someone for a second time? |
