Vacation '05: Field of Battle

This thread is for all your comic discussion needs while I'm out of town.

Prelude:

Yeah, yeah. The first one's all text. It picks up after that. Stay tuned.

PyrosNine 07-30-2005 11:16 PM

Hm...EZ company, Eh? I somehow get the feeling Battlefield 2 was a helpful research tool. Anyway, I eagerly await the next one. Fo real.

The Fifth Power 07-30-2005 11:29 PM

I like the idea, and stuff. Is this going to be geared to more humor, or more plot?

Hybrid 07-31-2005 12:14 AM

I was kinda hoping for a straight week of 8BT goodness, but I guess we could go for a change of pace, so no complaints here: 7 days of new comics. . .

:fighter: Hey look, we're being replaced!

:thief: Over my dead body. . . and my loop-holed contracts we are. . .

:fighter: I think we'd be perfect! I know EVERYTHING there is to know about modern combat.

:bmage: Fighter, Zodiac Kenshido Style isn't considered modern. . . Now that you think about it, neither is your future. . . (Charges Hadoken. . .)

Carnivore 07-31-2005 12:24 AM

Wooo! Military stuff! I'm also a giant history geek, and, though I'm not big on war, military history is way more interesting than the immigrant clothing styles of the 1920s.

Tyrion 07-31-2005 06:22 AM

I want to see how Brian does this with the humor intact but still with enough respect so that he doesn't come back with a machine gun at his door eager to be friendly...

Staizer 07-31-2005 06:38 AM

if its humorous at all that is . . . I can't really see such a thing being very funny, but if he pulls it off, more power to him.

Desmant 07-31-2005 10:17 AM

This should be interesting. Knowing Brian it should be humorous but as recently shown by Fred from Megatokyo who did a more serious little comic then this one might be serious too.

Myst 07-31-2005 11:19 PM

So true, how in FPS games everyone wants to be the sniper. I thought it was quite funny. Especially the harsh language part.

Hybrid 07-31-2005 11:21 PM

Heheh, pretty funny team. . . Very satisfying and nice change of pace, bringing us a short new storyline with the same Clevinger Flavor.

Zebasiz 07-31-2005 11:44 PM

"We could snipe it"
Oh i loved that line.
XD;
Snipers rule!

Waylander 08-01-2005 12:24 AM

I get so pissed off at the amont of people who want to be snipers i mean seriously how much skill does it require half the time its just hiding.

and so that im not accused of being off topic.

I think that a change will be alright. 8BT rocks and i want 7 days worth but hey whos to complain with something else as long as it's funny

The Fifth Power 08-01-2005 12:30 AM

The question is, will brain let this die and go back to the FF1 comic when the week is over, or will he keep updating it now and again?

Waylander 08-01-2005 12:36 AM

well i suppose that depends on how popular it is if it is unpopular he'll probably drop it. But i doubt he will continue it because 8BT is so popular.

CHICAGO¤lollie 08-01-2005 12:50 AM

YES! RIVER CITY RANSOM SPRITES WITH Clevinger™-BRAND HUMOR! XD

...but now we've gotta wait a whole 22 hours and 10 minutes for the next installment. Oh misguided time, why can't you be fast for a change and fly on by? We, the petty reader folk of Internetopia, live in torment because of your 24-hour days!

Waylander 08-01-2005 12:52 AM

Just imagine if Sarda hadn't messed with causality and left it as 36 hour days

Cybren 08-01-2005 03:37 AM

pfft, Brian goes from saying First Person Shooters are horrible, to opening his own server, to mocking the people who play it openly?
That takes atleast two years for most people!

Great Cartoonist 08-01-2005 07:56 AM

First he uses FF1 sprites, then Mega Man sprites, now RCR sprites? It's like he's making old classics look new again, with extra awesomeness.
On a side note, I did play the BF2 demo once. I had this scenario happen while I was playing against the computer. I took the anti-tank weapons, then I changed my mind so I got myself killed, then this medic comes along and revives me, then I get killed almost immediately, then I get revived, killed, revived, killed, etc.
I got stuck in this loop for a while until the computer wisened up and killed the medic.

Desmant 08-01-2005 10:14 AM

HA FOOLS!! I TOLD YOU IT WOULD BE FUNNY! I myself am I sniper but if there is somebody else on the time I will gladly pick up my machine gun to even things out. But some just wont let get of the sniper even if their lives depended on it.

ElfLad 08-01-2005 10:38 AM

Remember what happened to Dynasty Warriors?
Now, as for me, if Brian could do FoB, whatever the FF comic's official name is, and DW at the same time, 8-Bit Theater would truly live up to its name. But it would be an enormous workload for one person to simultaneously do three comics.

Myst 08-01-2005 10:35 PM

Well, Brian already does three comics a week, so really, it would just go into rotation, something like Tuesday: (FF1 comic) Thursday: Dynasty Memories Saturday: FoB.

ElfLad 08-02-2005 08:52 AM

Yeah, but then people would start complaining about how slowly it's going, etc.

Really, it's a pity that DW and FoB won't be continued though. They're every bit as funny as most of 8BT.

Skyshot 08-02-2005 12:21 PM

Roy G. Bivowitz? Yeah, that's convincing. :)

Waterfall_robot 08-02-2005 02:24 PM

These are not turning out to be very interesting. I'm depressed that this could of instead have been 7 8BT comics instead*. The misery.

*Oops, that was redundant.

Great Cartoonist 08-02-2005 04:11 PM

Maybe not for you, but for me they are.
What's not to like about it? It has the same brand of Brian Clevinger humor as in 8-Bit Theatre and Dynasty Memory.

Desmant 08-02-2005 05:24 PM

The FF's comic is 8-bit theater. The site is Nuklear Power. And that might take too much time. What he needs his like every so often he does DW or FoB weeks.

netrider6 08-02-2005 11:09 PM

Wow, Tex has just become my favorite character...

pendejochy 08-03-2005 12:34 AM

"What's he gonna do shoot at us?"

I think I'm starting to warm up to this new comic already.

Waterfall_robot 08-03-2005 12:43 AM

I'm wanting to like this, but I'm not getting it. I think my humor function broke.

Tebor 08-03-2005 01:06 AM

I like it, but what does: Arghit'satankjesusgodwhy mean?

I can make out:
Hit
Satan
Jesus
God
and Why

So like what?

SnoopyG 08-03-2005 01:34 AM

i think its
Argh it's a tank jesus god why
i dont really know whats going on but since its from Mr. Clevinger, it must be good.

PyrosNine 08-03-2005 01:45 AM

I like the plot and the idiots who all use the sniper rifle. For you see, in every other fps game, the sniper rifle pwns. So naturall anybody who wants a few easy kills gets their diry little mitts on it, so you end up with everyone thriving on sniping.

But in battlefield 2, and in real life, sniping's effectiveness is minimal, especially when you are up against a tank, which you learn quickly that you need something more explosive, as your pathetic sniper bullets just bounce off. And if everyone's a sniper, the tank wins. And dont' get me started on choppers.

Archbio 08-03-2005 01:45 AM

Nope. Not getting that whole comic either.

MetalPsycho 08-03-2005 06:13 AM

Tex..........hmmm. There's a reference there. I just know it.

Anyway, I see Brian has not abandoned the sheer awsomeness of his funny. But what I really loved about the first comic was the guy's silent expression at "We could snipe it."

Reaction humor always gets me.

I feel sorry for the guy with the huge dishpan sized eyes and the hard to pronounce name. Seriously, he has some pretty bad luck right there. Not a good sign of things to come.

But I REALLY like the third one for one particular line. "I have no idea what that means and that only makes it worse."

Something about that line reminds me why I started keeping up with 8 bit theater in the first place.

So keep up the good work Clevenger, you master nerd you. =P

Only Tex I know is from Red Vs. Blue. I see similarites in character....

Meister 08-03-2005 01:43 PM

What's not to get? Roy is utterly terrified by the psycho mechanic, an enemy tank is approaching, the Sniper Squad is running away from it in a mindless panic, it turns out they had Tex' gear with them, and Tex has apparently watched them and is, indeed, pissed at them for taking his stuff. Perfectly normal day. :p

pendejochy 08-04-2005 12:28 AM

"You ate mt falafel!"-good ones.

I like the comedy of the strip (of course, it is brian's) but my main problem is telling the difference between the charactors. They have somewhat of a tendency to look the same to me. I just know that there is the wide-eyed Noob, the crazy mechanic guy, one of the people is called Tex (I'm not sure which one is tex, though.) Meh, maybe it is because their forms of dress are not a distinctive as the 8-bit cast.

The Fifth Power 08-04-2005 12:45 AM

And the fact that most of their bodies are hidden, and most of them haven't had an devolpment...

Tebor 08-04-2005 01:12 AM

Gotta love racist jokes. Okay, screw racist jokes, it's all about the THUNK of the tank barrel running into the soldier! GENIUS!

Drece 08-04-2005 02:12 AM

I would just like to point out one thing thats bugging me. Well it seems some people actually think that every time a Muslim bombs something that the muslim thinks its "holy". This is not the case, any one who thinks that people who blow them selves up to kill every person around them are evil (Although some times those guys just claim to be Muslims and are doing it for other reasons) need to be told something. This is that those suicide bombers are trying the best they can to show they will not give up, if you don't know, America is carpet bombing, cluster bombing, and in all just killing for oil.

They some times blow up the oil rigs just to show that if they don't get it they won't let any one get it. Well I'm done babling about a bunch of diffrent things that are only somewhat connected.

Either way with that out of the way, it was a good comic. Where exatly did he get all these ideas? Hmmm well seeing how he shows all the characters as evil... oh GOD HE MADE A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL!!!

Meister 08-04-2005 03:30 AM

Folks, we're not getting into that here. If someone wants to reply to this, and oh they will, PM or Discussion is the way to go.

That said, it's good to see that Brians narration style ("Everyone's a moron!") works in that setting as well. :p

I mean it, not in this thread.

MetalPsycho 08-04-2005 06:33 AM

Poor poor newbie. He never had a chance with these crazy people.

You know he's going to get blown sky high.

I'm only saddened by the thought that there's only one more to go. ;__;

Taren 08-04-2005 07:29 AM

Meh, I haven't liked these as much as some of Brian's usual stuff. Not that I don't like the escapades of the EZ company, because they've had some funny lines, (Sniper 4eva!) but this filler hasn't been as good as say...the Dynasty Memories stuff.

Edit: That being said, ten bucks says that Newbie'll die before the end of the week.

Great Cartoonist 08-04-2005 07:30 AM

Oh look, Juuki and Asaji, two of my favorite badguys from Technos Samurai. Wimps.
With a tank like that, who wouldn't be cowering in fear? (Except for the guys driving it)

G.I.R. 08-04-2005 12:50 PM

Best line in the whole thing...

When we are done slaughtering the Americans, I am so declaring a holy war on you!

Flamehead6544 08-04-2005 01:55 PM

heh, IMHO, I think that ths comic could go somewhere very funny very fast. I remember the first couple of 8BT's comics weren't so great, because I didn't know what to expect. Maybe these are the ramblings of an ADD afflicted boy, but when I go back, I can still laugh at the first Hadoken... and the first Boatdoken... actually, anything ending in Doken is good for me.

ElfLad 08-04-2005 02:05 PM

Poor newbie...

Waterfall_robot 08-04-2005 02:54 PM

I didn't feel this comic either.

Bizzaro_Exdeath 08-04-2005 04:19 PM

I love falafel. I can certainly relate to that character who wants to declare holy war.

talse 08-04-2005 11:16 PM

this is where we're getting into it. you know, with this thing starting over, we get to observe brian at a dry run, with plenty of time for contemplation on his method, and at this point, i can safely say that he would take a similar amount of time for set up to get to the good stuff. think about it, you can't reference jokes from no where and expect most people to get them, you have to set the mood first, and he achomplishes that very well.

and tyranosaurs were the tanks of the prehistoric world, all 3 and half of them.
:edit: you really don't want to hear the math on that one, suffice it to say, you wanted out of canada at the time.

pendejochy 08-04-2005 11:25 PM

Number five is the best yet. If this becomes a running series, I thikn my favorite charactor will be the "upside-down-guy" as I don't know his real name.

talse 08-05-2005 12:07 AM

i counted it up, and i'd be willing to say there are 6 jokes in that last one. i could list them tomorow when i wake up if you'd like.

pendejochy 08-05-2005 12:16 AM

Go for it.

I'd like to know whta upside down guy's suggestion for a nickname for the nwebiw was a refernce to.

yoav 08-05-2005 04:20 AM

You mean Methuselah ? If thats so, it's sometimes a nickname to a person who has lived a very long time*. Also belonged to a man in the Bible/Torah that lived 900+ years.

*Or at least I think it is.

Flamehead6544 08-05-2005 08:23 AM

I still like the guy behind the crates advice to noobie, "I heard if you don't move they can't see you" and the proceeding talk about the T-rex.

talse 08-05-2005 10:59 AM

frames 1-3 are one joke, frames 3-4 can be an independant joke, frame 4-6 are brilian, wait, thats 3 empty frames, so 4-8, so thats 3. 4 would 9 on it's own. 10 i think is just funny that the newbie would think the reason they weren't shooting was he was in the way, so thats 5. 11-12 are joke 6 with T-rexs and 13 is joke 7. i guess my early estimate was a bit off. though joke 7 kind of needs the aimless banter of the previous to work.

MetalPsycho 08-05-2005 12:28 PM

Hehe. Focus. Focus is for smart people who aren't in a Brian Clevenger comic, silly newbie. =P

But really, this is dang good. This could turn into something really funny if Brian ever descides to continue it.

talse 08-05-2005 11:17 PM

another piece of gold, time for a joke tally! frames 1-4 seem to be pretty solid, so thats 1. i have no clue what happened between frames 5 and 6, though i think they tried firing the tank cannon, and it blew the arabs up instead. but the expression on his face is priceless, so i give it a joke count, so 3. 7 to 12 makes for a good bit of "help me, i'm being ignored" angsty goodness, but not a joke, the way he was being ignored though, in frames 8 to 11, #4, solid gold dinosaur military anachronism joy. the epilouge had what i'd say qualifys as 2 solid jokes, or at least funny nugget sized chucklies. suzie, heh. tallies up to 6, any disagreements?

netrider6 08-05-2005 11:36 PM

Hehe.... Suzie.

Swiftbow 08-05-2005 11:44 PM

Quote:

He grabbed that rocket launcher on top of the upside-down jeep and fired it. The beeping was the targeting system, I assume.

ElfLad 08-05-2005 11:49 PM

That was frickin' hilarious.

netrider6 08-05-2005 11:51 PM

Took me a while to figure it out too. The AIM! part looked like an upside-down person in green pants to me at first glance....

Carnivore 08-06-2005 12:14 AM

Okay, I wasn't feeling the previus ones, but I really like this one. Is it just me, or is it a troop of Red Mages? "Gentlemen? The Stegosaur. Discuss" really sounds like a Red Mage thing to say.

MetalPsycho 08-06-2005 06:34 AM

"Gentlemen? The Stegosaur. Discuss"

There's so much funny about that. =D

Great Cartoonist 08-06-2005 06:43 AM

Which dinosaur is clearly the tank of the prehistoric world? That I'd like to know.
Oh, and by the way, this new article is up.

Sky Warrior Bob 08-06-2005 08:07 AM

Roy G BIVowitz, huh? Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo & Violet.

Discuss.

SWK
- Personally, I blame Paranoia.

ElfLad 08-06-2005 10:05 AM

Rainbow- Sign of gay pride... Coincidence?

talse 08-06-2005 10:05 AM

i'd bet it was intentional, course thats just me.

Skyshot 08-06-2005 01:19 PM

If you look at post #24 on this thread, you'll see someone noticed that well before now.

Interesting how they've all come out from behind the crate after the tank blows, but don't pay attention to the poor sucker guy.

Nucleus 08-06-2005 02:44 PM

Distinguishing characters solely by their six-pixel hairlines is irritating, I have to say.

talse 08-06-2005 04:50 PM

you've been bothering with that? i've been doin it by the seat of my pants

Hooray for introductions at the END of the series! Like credits on TV... :D

talse 08-07-2005 12:02 AM

well, we've been subjected to it for 8 days, sunday to sunday, and what is the general concensus? my vote it was worth it. there were quality jokes and a worthwhile look at, and analysis of how brian does a comic.

Myst 08-07-2005 12:22 AM

I found it an enjoyable break. I wouldn't want to replace the FF 8 bit with it, but as a second series, it and dynasty memories should both recieve more comics. I'm still most amused by the 'see why I only have wrenches and shotguns' segments

PyrosNine 08-07-2005 12:31 AM

I was particularly touched by the wrenches and shotguns part. Considering I always play as engineer in BF2. Put me riding 'shotgun' on a tank, and I'm INVINCIBLE!

Pyros Likey shotgun.

Salookanana 08-07-2005 04:55 AM

I say: Keep FF 8 bit the main comic, but every week or so give us a Dynasty Memories or a EZ company. They all rock! And since varity is the spice of life: GIVE US MORE!

You are like a dealer who has gotten us hooked on oh so good stuff! WE HUNGER!!! GAH! I'm going through withdrawl!! more... dynasty... gahk...

henke37 08-07-2005 09:06 AM

God proof that Brian absolutly could handle the end of 8-bit. If 8-bit has to go, this is a worthy replacement.
