Too bad you don't have many area-effect spells :p

I know lighting a torch would be provoking an attack of oppurtunity but would I be able to attack after also?

Krylo 09-02-2005 05:02 PM

Well, if I'm reading the rules right, lighting a torch is a full round action, meaning it takes your entire round--so you could attack on the next round. If you have a tindertwig it's then a standard action so you could make a move or free action along with it, but not another standard (attacking), so again, on your next round. Although I think getting the torch out would be a move action in the first place... so you'd have to spend one round getting it out and attacking/full defense/random other standard action (AoO for getting it out), and then a round lighting it without being able to do anything else (AoO).

So, in short, you're boned for at least two rounds.

Of course, I'm kind of new to this so I don't know for certain...

PhoenixFlame 09-02-2005 05:32 PM

Krylo, it takes even longer and a concentration/dexterity check or somesuch to light a torch in the dark, when you cannot see. This is further exascerbated by being distracted (Aka, swarmed by rats) while taking damage from said distraction... In addition to a move action to draw the torch, like you said.

So yeah, he has very little chance of getting a torch working. It's assumed you have flint and tinder, so...

I'd say, a move action to draw the torch, next round, you'll make a DC 15 dexterity check to try and light it while keeping the rats off of it, and a DC 15 concentration check to not screw up while they're tearing you up. Full round action on top of that. It'd be hard, yes. Dante could give you a more specific analysis, however, I think those checks are a bit too forgiving.

Flint and tinder needs relative peace to light. He's both murky-eyed AND blinded AND being swarmed by feral rats. He should find another way.

My connection = suck. I'll try to post whenever I can; for now Phoenix is the acting DM. Phoenix, assume that Pyros is in Elysian's way, about 250 feet ahead of her. DM appropriately. krylo can find his way into the sewers like everyone else - give him a swarm of his own to fight.

Incendius 09-02-2005 08:26 PM

I have absolutely no clue what to do in this situation, does anyone have any ideas?

Krylo 09-02-2005 08:35 PM

Flurry and/or full attack repeatedly would be my suggestion. You can't run fast enough in the dark to get away, you can't light a torch, and defending would only make the inevitable take a bit longer. If you can hit them a few more times, though, you should be able to do away with them.

PhoenixFlame 09-02-2005 08:49 PM

Right, Elysian, I assume you're moving at 10 feet per round, creeping along silently as your light spell murkily illuminates the area ahead of you. It'll take 25 rounds to reach poor Severin.

Meanwhile, Pyros, make your next round's attack rolls. ((Nevermind, I rolled them for you. Poor guy. You're having lots of trouble hitting them. 3 attacks with about a 60% hit rate, a 50% miss chance, and a 50% further miss chance, not good at all.))

Krylo, you hear the same skittering and screeching as the rest of the party did before. While your character is deftly concealed in the shadows, the ravenous rats are still able to smell him. You detect them at 30 feet away, act accordingly. Initiative 7 for them.

Incendius 09-02-2005 09:19 PM

I'm getting killed by some rats.......... Is there really any hope at all of me getting out of this? The only way I see is Dues Ex Machina or kria comes over to help...

PhoenixFlame 09-02-2005 09:34 PM

You'll get lucky eventually. If you don't, Kira will arrive in 24 rounds...
