Question
I'm thinking about buying a TracPhone but i'm not sure so if anyone here has any sugguestions about that please let me know thanx
|
Punctuation please.
I don't really have any suggestions, but I'd like to know... What is a TracPhone? |
I believe it's a TracFone. With an "F." Apparantly, it's a wireless phone service. I really haven't heard anything about it that would make me want to subscribe over some other mobile phone service. The only thing special about it is something about controlling your plan. I think.

The TracFone plan is one where you pay as you go. After you buy your phone, it generally comes with about $15 worth of minutes. You can buy more minutes whenever you want, either by using your credit card or by buying prepaid cards from businesses. You can call anywhere nation-wide, but you don't get any of those "Free Nights and Weekends" that are all the rage with cell phones now. The benefit is that you only have to buy the minutes you need and aren't forced into a contract. If you don't travel much, but you really want a cell phone, then get a TracFone if the prepaid plan looks good to you. If you plan on doing any travelling at all, stay far, far away from the TracFone, as its coverage area is very small.

News link and Product link. CT said it best, though. They've only been around recently, and it seems only in the States, from what I can tell.

Pay as you go is very very common in Europe. It works well but the drawback is if you run out of cred in the midst of something important you're fucked.

I own a motorolla tracfone. I like them, becuase my finances are not always stable enough to pay a monthly bill, yet they are sometimes plentiful enough to buy a huge load of minutes that won't run out at months end (if you buy their 300 min + double min + annual subscription at a pretty decent $150.00 or so... it pays for itself if you use it a lot)
If you don't need all the bells and whistles, tracfones are nice (most are very simple models), and if you run out of minutes and can't afford to buy more atm, oh well. Get 'em later.... although, you DO loose your phone number and get a new one assigned when you buy new minutes. The 'I happen-to-be-broke-atm' ppl and/or irresponsbile might find that irritating. |
So what we are talking about, is a prepaid? Right?
Old things those are. And I dunno, but I've never found them too usefull. Atleast not for me. They have also been making some trouble, in a way. You can't track the owner of a prepaid. |
I'd rather not sign a contract or have any obligation to any cell company - I'll take the extra trouble of having a prepaid phone for that peace of mind.
And not being able to track someone shouldn't really be that big of a deal - home phone numbers can make themselves unlisted if they really want to... |
I use T-Mobile ToGo, myself. Pretty much the same benefits as a TracFone, complete with the crappy service area, but I like it better for some reason. Maybe it's because I don't get a new phone number every time I run out of minutes.
