Comics To the Web

Okay, here's the deal. Originally, I planned to just share my sprite comic with my friends. But printing them out with my dad's printer has taken a toll on his ink and his temper. So now I'm going to take it to the web and I'm looking for advice on how much it costs, which server to use, etc.

If you still want to just show it to your friends, use a free server like freewebs or something. You can just post them up, and you don't have to pay anything.

If you want to go more professional-looking, you can pay, and there are plenty of options. I'm sure this has been discussed in detail somewhere else on the site, use the search function.

And on the same vein, just google for "free web hosting" or something, and you can find a bunch. Since they're free, you can try out a few.

Free hosting for webcomics.

Is it copyright infringement if my comic has the same name as another comic?

Only if the name is copy righted, I think. Though I would come up with a new name just for the sake of someone trying to find your web-comic with a search engine and finding the other guys instead.

Keenspace does have free hosting for comics. However I checked their disclaimer and they don't seem to like sprite comics. I'll have to check into it again maybe that has changed. (I hope so because I need hosting for my comic.)

Drunk Duck is another site that hosts comics for free. They don't seem to have any problem with sprite comics either.

Sprite comics are not copywright infringement.

Basically, if you don't make the original product/game look bad, or inhibit their sales (which is dumb, because most sprite comics make me WANT to play the game), and aren't using it for personal commercial gain, it's Fair Use, and legal.

I'm not sure how Brian gets around it with his merchandising, I haven't looked into it. But in themselves, sprite comics aren't illegal.

Brian doesn't use FF1 sprites in his T-shirts etc. There's artwork that is based on the charecters HE created (The personality of BM, RM, FTR, THF, WM, BB, etc are all Brian's creation, though the images of them are not.)

Besides, sqaure should be leaving gifts and monies on his doorstep - his comic has increased the popularity of what should be an obsolete game. Its one of the reasons I bothered to play ANY of FF1 OR 2 in the Origins package.

Also, if you don't want to really publish anything, you can always just use a free image host and give your friends the links to them.
