Announcement: Google to take over world

http://gigaom.com/2005/09/30/google-...co-wifi-plans/

Well, sorta.

So apparently Google is badass and decided to give all of San Francisco wi-fi across the entire goddamn city. Do you think this is feasable? For free? I mean, sure, there's the whole "reuglar" and "Premium" subscriptions..but come on, will it hold?

I find it unlikely that this will even be fully realized.
If it does go off without a hitch, then yes, they very well could take over the world.

As a side note, I've noticed that posts with links that involve more than just pretty pictures, tend to rate pretty low on the number of replies.

Fucking awesome. If Google ever needs to borrow a few bucks to take over the world, I'll lend it to them. I can't see why Google would do this, but hey, free Intraweb.

You know what? We should have an Internet tax so that all cities can have free internet everywhere.

You gotta worry about the telecoms who don't want the government to get involved. Just look at New York where you got a guy running on just that campaign...

Wi-Fi and Cell coverage for all of NY.

The problem is SBC could lose buisness because of this. If Google says "Here you go," that means - with the exceptions of the "Maximum Overdrive" online gamers - there's no point in paying for subscription provided you have a wireless adapter. Which don't cost much.

Eh, I have no problem with Google owning the world.

Not like we've done such a great job.

Digg has been in a furvor about this for about three-four months I think, abouts. It was cool as more info unfolded. I remember when the first info was just "Google is buying dark cables (unused) for some reason" and stuff.

But ya--free wifi would be sick.

Nique 10-02-2005 04:09 PM

Well, I dunno if it would be monopolizing the field, but I wouldn't complain. Google hasn't done anything bad to me lately, and if they want to give me free internet, who am I to stop them?

Mirai Gen 10-02-2005 05:26 PM

The only reason it's really a contraversy fall into two categories
1 - Companies like SBC will lose buisness, undoubtedly.
2 - Can they do it, realistically, for indefinate periods of time?

Nique 10-02-2005 05:31 PM

yes, and I think yes.

Giving something of quality away increases your popularity, so with some clever buisness management... couldn't this be a free service with benefits for google and the consumer?

People who consider "free intArweb!" are not thinking clearly and looking at the bigger picture..

If the internet were to become a goverment owned thing, all kinds of problems could arise..

#1: Many people would lose thier jobs, and the economy would suffer the consequinces.

#2: Our ammendment right to free speech would be tarnished. As the goverment liables anyone saying something bad about them a terrorist or some other social threat.

#3: We no longer would have supirior internet services. If we don't like the way our shit server is running, too bad, it's the goverment's. Atleast now, I can choose to switch my provider anytime I want if it pisses me off enough.

And #4: It only brings us closer to becoming a socialist state. And The United States was never meant to be a socialism.
