Marvel Nemesis

Please, for the love of god do not buy this game. No matter how much of a gamer+comic fan you might be, there are better places to spend your $50 + Tax (where applicable).

I was skeptical from the start. EA has no fighting game credentials (And no, Def Jam Vendetta/Fight for NY do not count... amazingly enough, MN uses the same gameplay engine and manages to suck even worse than either of the aforementioned titles did) and to be frank, the US does not have a great track record when it comes to this genre to begin with.

Without beating around the bush, I will simply say that this title does nothing to break that tradition. In a word or two, Marvel Nemesis is pure and utter garbage. It features two buttons used in offensive maneuvers, one melee attack button and one throw button. Throwing is also mostly useless, so for all intents and purposes you can cut that down to one button for offense. Even as a straight-up brawler, the game is chokingly limited from the get-go due to the lack of offensive options.

Basically, the premise is that one character smashes the square button while in relative proximity to another character. Your on-screen avatar then performs a bunch of poorly animated attacks. To add to this amazing depth, after you knock your opponent to the ground, you can continue to mash the attack button and do some manner of drop-kick to your opponent, and quite literally kick them when they're down. After you're done kicking them, you can mash that attack button some more, and continue to kick them while they're flat on their back until they die.

That's right folks, not only does the game suck at it's core, but it appears to be entirely broken by way of an exploit that a goddamn four year old could take advantage of!

There's some special powers in there too, but as best I can tell from the demo included in OPM, your special powers are reserved entirely for making you move around the arena in a slightly flashier than normal manner. Personally, I used it to ring myself out as quickly as possible when I played Spider-Man.

I could continue to go on, denouncing every other aspect of this game, but I'm already rambling. I will simply end this rant by saying that "Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects" was aptly sub-titled, in that it described the combined talents of the designers and developers behind this pile of utter garbage with pinpoint accuracy.

For the love of god people, Soul Calibur 3 releases in less than a month. Save your money.

And I had such high hopes...

*sigh*
Advance Wars has yet to fail me.

I kinda figured.

I should have known. It came out on the Gamecube. I own a Gamecube. And I know i'm not allowed any good fighting games besides SSBM and Soul Calibur II.

That damn Namco not giving me Soul Calibur III. I need it :( .

Thanks for the tip. Soul Calibur is my favorite fighting game series.

That was a low blow. The GC version of SCII was the most fun of the three.

I know. Link rocked that game with his arrows and his kai-ten-giri (japenese name for spin attack.).

but back on topic, The game had Thing, Spider-Man, and Wolverine. I can't believe they screwed it up!

Squall Leonhart 10-03-2005 08:21 PM

Shit... Fuck...

I was looking foward to this game! I mean, sure, they decided the Thing should go instead of the Hulk, and they thought it was a good idea to get rid of Captain America from the very start and what not evident flaws, but still, it had Venom and Spider-Man, something I thought very cool, not to mention Wolverine, who has always rocked.

I guess the least I can do now is give it a rental. I waited long enough to just let it go by.

If you're really masochistic, check out the newest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine. It's got a playable featuring Spider-Man and Johnny Ohm, who I'm assuming is one of the characters of EA's design. I've tooled around on this and a bit of the retail version as well. You're not going to get anything worthwhile out of the full version that you can't get out of the demo, so I'd suggest going this route if you really, really need to try it out for yourself.

Of course, the real reason to buy it would be the playable Soul Calibur 3 demo. I must say, I was a bit skeptical given SC2's lackluster performance on the PS2 compared to the 'Cube and Xbox, but it's 100% smooth and didn't seem to suffer from any slowdown or general lack of speed compared to it's predecessor. And it looked and played flawless, to boot!

Ahh, the benefits of living within the US... I do not have that privilege though... I guess I'm damned to rent the game to see why people says it screws.

Again, you eat in front of the hungry... Why must you mock us third-world citizens so? We even get the games a few days after the US release. Why must you do this to!? :gonk:
