Dogs used as shark bait

It's been too long since I last posted a news story, so let's start fresh with...the French.

***Warning: Graphic***

:O_o:

As if I didn't have ENOUGH reason to hate the french.

I'm sorry, but that picture simply makes me think of my dog, and that makes me VERY angry. How could they do that to a dog?

Meister 10-03-2005 11:51 AM

Mind you, the Sun barely deserves to be given the name "newspaper" - they'll do anything to sell. Think "National Enquirer."

Also, the fact that the island is French governed doesn't mean the French are the heads of an evil international shark-baiting organization. In fact, this article explicitly states that it's a violation of French law. If you're posting stuff like this, at least keep it on an appropriate level for Discussion. Don't barge in screaming "holy shit it's THE FRENCH!" if all you have are reports about something that, looked at calmly, is nothing but another crime.

But, isn't that all I post? :D

Seriously though, I should've made it more clear that it was on a French island and the paper was a tabloid. A tabloid, I'm sad to say, my grandma is subscribed to.

Raiden 10-03-2005 12:00 PM

All right, I didn't realize that it was just a tabloid.

What I wonder is, why are they trying to bait sharks? I really doubt that it's for research purposes, since they most likely could get grants to buy actual bait with.

You have my sincere condolences on the death of her taste in media.

Being openly racist makes you smarter!

For one thing, tabloid. For another thing, even if it were this story, in some cultures, dogs are as "important" as mice. That's animal bias, there. Now, I'm fairly certain the French aren't like that--but even if they were, I don't see the problem: it's just a big fluffy version of an organism.

I'm a bit at a loss to find what is supposed to be significant in that fact.

To think this doesn't/wouldn't constitute appalling cruelty also 'animal bias' of some kind. The fact that people's reaction is stronger because it's a dog specifically borders on the arbitrary I'd agree with, but on the other hand I don't find one or several cultures vouching for this (instead of against) any more impressive.

Lockeownzj00 10-03-2005 04:54 PM

I meant fluffy organism to point out that it's mostly an aesthetic attachment we have to the way dogs "look." Not concern for the life, but concerned that something they find cute will be gone.

Of course, many people are not like that. I just, personally, would not want to put that much meaning on any animal.

I'll do a good old Dennis Leary quote here.

What are you?
"I'm an otter."
What do you do?
"I swim around on my back and do cute little human things with my hands."
You're free to go. And what are you?
"I'm a cow."
Get on the truck. You're a baseball glove.
