D&D 2 ?
I hoped it would never happen, but apparently someone is crazy enough to do it.
Less than 5 mins ago I saw a commercial on the Sci-Fi channel for, ahem, "Dungeons and Dragons 2: Wrath of the Dragon God" the movie. Has anybody heard anything about this before now? 'cause I sure haven't. :stressed: |
Sosa claims it's "not bad."
|
You know, I'd almost prefer it to be bad, like, really terrible. I am 99.999999999999.... percent sure that it cannot possibly be good, so the least they could do is make it hilariously bad. You know, like the Dragon Strike demo-video (FLOATING DUNGEON MASTER HEAD).
How does one even make a D&D movie? It's a game system. It's like making, "Active Time Battle," the romantic comedy. Hell, D&D doesn't even imply a fantasy setting these days. Now, if they made something based on one of the (good) books, instead of just throwing together a bunch of stuff that looks D&Dish, then maybe we'd get something decent. The last one wasn't so bad (except for that terrible, horrible, ridiculous ending), but it wasn't good either. However, as far as I'm concerned, mediocre is about the worst thing a movie can be; it leaves you with absolutely nothing to say. Edit: Every time I read that title, I picture William Shatner screaming, "BAHAMUUUUT!" |
God.
For. Bid. |
well, I didn't get to see the whole first movie all the way through... but it's better than SOME of the crap I've watched on TV and the theatres. Sosa claim's it's not bad. Sosa has never led me wrong before. I shall do as Sosa reccomends.
...Sosa also told me to burn things... |
The first one had only 2 things majorly against it:
1) The ending. Wha?! It had almost no closure and was just plain wierd. [Spoiler] Why would they fly into the air like pixies for no good reason? And he was just knighted and such 2) When you attach a majestic name such as Dungeons and Dragons to something, there is an automatic standard raising. Some of the things allowed in 'normal' fantasy films will be left wanting in the minds of the fans. If it had been named something like "Dragon Swarm" or such, it would be considered a fairly decent fantasy film. But that didn't happen. So, if you can ignore the D&D in the title, it's not all that bad. But, I've been an avid fan of the game for years and it's hard for me not to want something better, IMO. |
Is it really necessary to attach the D&D moniker? If you make a movie called "Wrath of the Dragon King" isn't your audience base about set?
|
Does it even continue the first story? And how can it be good without (that one funny black actor who I think may be a wayans brother but I'm terrible at remembering this kinda stuff and I'll beat my self up over it in bed until I can remember it.)
That was the best fantasy thief I"ve ever seen portrayed in a fantasy setting! Remember what his said and the look on his face when he found that bag of "magic" powder? I just burst out laughing in the theater, and some guy threw his popcorn of +5/+1 (It was stale, but lacked butter.) at me. The ending sucked. It sucked ass. The elven seductress, who might as well have been (and I think later portrayed a) Vulcan, goes to the hero and pretty much says "I'm not going to outright say he's still alive, but I'm just going to be vague and say something mystical along the lines of 'He's not pushing up daisies.'" |
There wasn't a whole lot wrong about the first movie, but like I said, there was really nothing right about it. It was just completely mediocre.

Fucking christ - as if it wasn't bad enough they hashed together a plot forgetting the main fucking thing about DND where the dragons are, you know, smarter than us. We also had to live with a Wayans brother in the wrong fucking era, overacting the most ludicrous lines in history. I mean, Ridley wasn't that bad, but we seriously needed him to do things like...you know...Hide. And Move Silent. Or Pick Pockets. Nothing he ever did in the movie. He wasn't a theif; he was a Chaotic Neutral fighter who was relatively greedy. Quote:
EDIT: I just realized how much of a DND loyalist I am. |

Anyways, I don't think that it could possibly be any worse than the original D&D movie. And if Sosa said that it's not that bad, then it must have done something to please the D&D fanbase. Hopefully something along the lines of not sucking so bad. |
The book(yes, I read it) had a much better ending. Very plain and to the point, "Goodbye old friend." End close.
Also... Thora Burch as the "Empress" please! Get someone with a modicum of acting talent at least! This girl couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag! She was horrible in American Beauty and she was even worse here. And don't even get me started on the Wayans Brother... The movie had a lot of potential, but it flopped horribly because of bad decisions. I can only hope the second one(hopefully not a sequel) will be better. :stressed: |
Honestly, I thought Kenan Ivory [Wayans] was the best actor in the entire cast.
|
I don't see how. He was trying too hard to be funny half the time, and the other half it was him critiquing the entire plot of the movie. It was like they had him for comic relief and also the audience's personal Avatar.
Well, in very good news, the rumor that Paris "I do anything for money" Hilton will not be in the cast. The IMDB also shows the box art for the movie, which contains a large Dungeons and Dragons logo ala Wizards of the Coast. Should be decent, at least. |

It was Marlon... not Kenan. Kenan was the bald one from such things as In Living Color and [sarcasm] the classic action thriller [/sarcasm] "Most Wanted" which also featured JOhn Voight(sp?). They probably got him to do it after Kenan turned it down because it wasn't high profile enough for him to put his name on. |
Have any of *EVER* even tried to watch a Sci-Fi Channel original movie? IMO, this is nothing less than a step up from what they normally come up with, *EVEN* if it turns out to be twice as bad as the orginal DND.
But actually, from the promo I've seen, the new DND movie looks like it might be semi-decent. I mean the first one really suffered with hammy acting & crappy attempts at "humor". This one seems like its going to take itself a bit more seriously, which could be good if it doesn't go too far with that. Frankly, if it ends up like Dragonslayer (a good campy dragon movie) I'll be more than satisfied. http://www.scifi.com/dnd/ SWK |

I agree with KC here. Most of SciFI's movies are pretty decent... except for that one Bruce Campbell movie with Gabrielle from Xena where they came home to earch to find it infested with people/wood eating insect aliens. That was just bad.
Man With The Screaming Brain was actually a pretty good and funny movie. I'm definitely giving this one a chance when it comes on. It'll give me a break from playing Dawn of War: Winter Assault for hours on end.(damn you Brian Clevinger for giving it a good review and being right! Damn yous I say!) |
Myself, and all of my friends that watched it at a LAN, thought it was horrible. Just horrible. I'm not even going to bother going into it really, it was as bad or worse then the first movie. The first movie was also horrible.
Don't watch this movie if you aren't doing so for free. |
:O_o:
Do I see the same Sci-Fi orginal movies that you guys do? I mean, sure some of them are entertaining, but for the most part...I find them lacking in quality, shall we say. There are exceptions, to be sure, but I found most of them to be pretty lame...especially the fantasy based ones. I have very low hopes for this. Even the dracolich flying around in the commericial for it (at least I assume it's a dracolich) wasn't enough for me to get past my initial thought of "You have got to be kidding me!" |

What I was saying was that D&D was a step up for the Sci-Fi Channel, and quite frankly, I don't think even the Sci-Fi channel could do all that much worse than the 1st D&D. It might even be better. I mean, the Sci-Fi channel can come up with some almost decent stuff. I mean, I kinda liked their Waterworld flick, and live-action The Guyver 2 was about the same quality as The Guyver 1. SWK - Luke, you are a freak, a super freak. |
I said "some" of their movies are decent. Maybe I used the word good, but it was a bit too strong. 90% of the movies on SciFi are under par B Movies. And I still agree with you, KC. This is a step up for them. I'll be watching it on Saturday because I'll have nothing better to do. Or I'll TiVO it and watch it when I'm bored(I may just go see Serenity again).
But remember, this is SciFi. The series shows they have are good because they don't cost a lot to make. The movies are about as good as they can be considering the money SciFi has to put into them. Personally, I'd rather see them put money into getting Firefly from Fox, but alas I am not in control of that. |

Besides, if the Serenity movie does well enough, that can only serve to encourage this likelyhood. I mean, Sci-Fi channel did add a few more years to Mst3k, so who knows? And while they're movies tend to suck, some of their original series have been worth watching. Invisible Man & Farscape were two of my favorites. SWK |

My mind just decided it was a more interesting read if it blotted out a few words for me. Sorry about that. |
As a long time dungeons and dragons player/DM I feel the need to watch this movie even if it turns out really bad. The first one was a bomb to be sure but I hope this one fairs better.
|
Having seen it on Scifi less than an hour ago, I must say it is better than the first one... by far.
More thoughts to come once I sleep and am able to gather some. |
Maybe I shouldn't reply to my own post...
The movie was great! The cgi and makeup were nothing to boast about but once the movie got started it felt like a real dnd campaign! I recognized magic items the characters used, and spells they cast. No more generic glowy swords or magic powder spells from the last movie. The actors actually you know, acted.
|
Dammit! Missed it! Stupid Prince of Persia! Any reruns of it?
|
There's a 1:00 AM show this morning.
|
Or in an hour. Cause it's 12. Or at least where I am. Oh well. I suppose I don't need sleep.
|
Scifi is showing it again later this week on thursday at 9:00. Be there or suffer xp loss!
|
I hope Scifi shows the commercials for the actual Dungeons and Dragons game again, those almost added to the fun of watching the movie. It was like Adult Swim almost. They would chime in stuff like, "Adventurer's Rule #2: Always keep the cleric alive." Then in the movie the cleric would suddenly get eaten by a dragon and you'd just have to laugh.
|
What...the...
It was...watchable. My soul wasn't filled with hate and loathing as I watched it. Wasn't the greatest movie ever, but compared to the original, this one was pretty good. ::Looks at the guys who made the first D&D movie:: Sci-Fi made a sequal that was greater than your original movie. Seppuku is your only choice if you have any honor left in you. |
If it doesn't have Jeremy Irons hamming it up, I don't see why I should give a damn
|
Because it's chock full of DnD references?
|
Well, it wasn't a great movie (except for Sci-Fi channel; it was awesome when held to those standards), but it was an effective ad for D&D. Did I say "ad?" I meant, uh,... no, I meant ad. But in this case, that's not a bad thing. It's like the writers played a short campaign, then wrote a script based off of their experiences. It was certainly more D&D-ish than the "real" movie.
|
I will reserve my opinion on this movie until I sit down and watch it. If its bad then I will join in the poopfling fest (if one is already in action).
|
Its on again. With a preview for THE FOG!
|
I'm sure they've learned from the mistakes they made in the previous movie. You can only become more experienced.
No point in judging movies that aren't out. |
I hope they do those "cut from movie, show a couple of nerds debating"...
Like that 8-bit flash movie that mentioned that D&D was sinful. |
hehe, unfortunately they don't. But there are times whens you just know the character rolled a 1 for their spot or listen check.
|
Well, i finally got a copy of it (Arr! ARR! Hoist up on yonder Bittorent client! There be bandwith about! Ahh, our allies, SuperNova! Jolly up and lower the sails!).
It was really good. Like, I don't mind decent-to-bad movies. But this was a good movie. Normally anything that's not 'okay' or 'bad' I deem a "Good" movie. But, let's recap. Spells that were cast; Dispel Magic, many times. Gust of Wind, twice. Wall of Fire, Detect Magic, Summmon Monster 4 (IV), Discern Location, Locate Object (as Cleric), Desintigrate, Lightning Bolt, Dimension Door, Shadow Conjuration, Polymorph Self three times. The cleric spells were Sound Burst, Speak With Plants ( I think), and the cleric made a Turn check. I recognized two magic items, almsot by name. "Gem of True Sight," and "Ring of Ram". The giant ram-horns on the ring made me laugh. As a side note: I really, really liked Lok. She was an awesome character, her barbarian raging was great, and I loved her introduction. "Yes, Lok! Nobody is better in combat than her." "Nobody is more reckless, either." *big, burly guy sits down, gets his drink spilled* "Hey, bloody fool!" *Woman with tattoo kicks the shit out of everyone* |
