Paper Mario Interest thread
Yes yes yes, you all must be confused, so let me explain.
Its a battle system I am wanting to test, basically ripped from the first Paper mario game and a little revamped for online rping. (Because if I said to twirl your thumbstick, then things would get confusing) As for characters, I can't decide whether to let you guys play characters from the Mario universe, or maybe an alternate reality in which you guys all play humans in this strange world. As for story, your basic, princess has been kidnapped and you must rescue her kinda of deal. Unless of course you guys want a deep and confusing plot in which everything won't make sense till the end. So, anyone up for this? |
An explanation of this battle system would be useful.
Also, I vote for no Mario characters. Instead, a very similar universe. Though not everyone should be a human who got transported to some weird world. |
Alright then, for the system
Characters are going to look like this (This isn't a character sheet, so its subject to change) Level: (Durh, everyone starts at 1) Hp: Heart Points(You should know what this is, starts at 10) Fp: Flower Points (Mana, starts at 5) Bp: Badge Points (Determines how many badges you can wear, starts at 3) Jump damage: (Starts off with 1, changes with badges) Weapon Damage: (Also at 1, changes with badges) Defense: (Starts at 1, changes with badges) Exp: (how muc exp is still needed before level up, its determined by 10 xcurrent level) I'll let everyone decide on what weapon you use, and when you find a badge that unlocks a special attack with that weapon, I'll tell you what that special attack does. As for fighting, it will go simple. Whoever sees each other first gets the first blow, then you trade blows until one is dead. Though the pcs get an advantage. In the game, you hit a button just right and you got to either deal an extra point of damage or dodge a point of damage. I'm replacing this with a roll of percentile dice. Get above 50, you deal extra damage, get below you don't. I will be doing all the rolling though, so don't worry about that, I'll just tell how the attack turns out. As for the two attacks, each have an advantage and a disadvantage. With weapons, your limited to just what is in front of you. For jump, you can hit any enemy you in battle with, and enemies that fly. Though enemies with spiked shells and whatnot can instead of taking damage, stop it and deal you a point of damage. You will get special attacks based on your badges and whatnot. You also get items, in which you can heal with, or use to deal damage, or cure statis effects. Instead of attacking, you can use an item for a turn. Badges are your equipment for this rp. Badges to equip will take a range from 1 bp to 6 bp, and each one will have a different effect. For example, the weapon warrior's badge gives you a -1 to jump attacks, but gives a +1 to weapon attacks, and it takes 3 bps to wear. Another example is lucky dodger, which takes 1 bp to wear and give a slightly better chance in avoiding attacks. (Note, if you played the Paper Mario games, then know that most of these badges I am using I made up myself.) As for the story goes, well its whatever you guys want to do. |
well seems worth a try. I also vote for non-mario characters. But if we do use mario people, I call Yoshi

I liked the Paper Mario battle system, so I'm interested. I'd like to see what you can do with this.
Edit: Just wanted to mention that I, too, am voting for no Mario characters. The more unique the setting, the better. |

i would definetely be interested in this. though, unlike what other people are saying, i think mario characters would be ok. like races and ethnicities are what i mean. you could be a type of yoshi or toad or koopa. though, what your character would be like would have different personalities and stuff. thats my two cents..

Most of the votes go for non-mario characters, so thats what it will be. Now do you guys want like a realistic gruesome enemies and whatnot, or do you want a more cartoonish feel to it? Note that this will take place in a medevilish setting, and if anyone has any ideas for a story I am all ears.

Cartoon. This should be like the Mario universe, minus the Mario characters.

Arlight then. I like the idea that this is set in the Mario universe, though we are keeping the whole paper feel to the characters. I'll probably end up giving badges that will mess with the paper feeling.
As for characters, its whatever you want to play guys. Just remember that each character should have a weapon attack equivalent and a jump attack equivalent. For the story? Well I haven't quite decided what I want to do, so I might as well let you guys help me decide, by what else, voting. 1) Save the princess. Easiest for me, and allows me to put all my focus in balancing this system out and making interesting enemies. 2) Couple of nations warring against each other. This gives the possibility of PvP, but probably will take some focus off the enemies. (Note I will still be making the rolls in the PvP, just to make sure everything is done right) 3) An enemy is going for the ultimate power, and has captured an item allowing him to do so. So you all must set out in search of these items. This will take some thinking over, and I would have to put off sign-ups a bit to get a basic idea on how to run it. 4) Other: Insert your ideas here if you don't like these |
