Modern RP Sign Up Thread
The world is ours. The time is ours. The technology is ours.
Crime syndicates run rampant, 'private contractors' work for the highest bidder--eliminating threats, and the understaffed, over worked, underpaid law enforcement agencies have to attempt to keep the world safe. It isn't easy. --- Basically, there's no story. It's very very free form as far as story goes. The characters shall be either members of law enforcement or members of criminal organizations, and shall be playing off of each other and I'll be your bosses. I may also introduce characters which I'll play as from time to time. I don't plan to have an actual character, though. The groups I'm thinking of having are as follows: CIA: Rogue Division (think CIA ghosts... assassins, etc. The government disavows all knowledge, by the way, so get caught and you're screwed.) FBI Normal Police Yakuza Russian Mafia Italian Mafia Hitmen (This isn't an actual group, these people are lone wolf assassins) The advantage to being in one of them (besides hitmen) would be that you have their backing. This means any NPCs I create for that group, regardless of how powerful or weak, will be on your side. You'll almost always have faceless back up, if not fleshed out back up, as a member of one of the law enforcement agencies. The disadvantages... well they depend on the group. One key one across all of them is that you have to listen to your superiors... unless you manage to become the head (not completely impossible in the mafias... or government agencies either, if you [and this] last long enough). Further, some may make you go up against better equipped opponents in smaller numbers... and may even greet failure with death, even if you survive the initial mistake, (Yakuza) or worse. The advantage of being independent is that you're free to do as you like and take whatever contracts you like. The disadvantages are that you only get to play if the other players offer to hire you (or you just happen to be in the right place)... or if they don't for long enough, I may. Also, every one of those organizations can, and probably will, get pissed at you. If they get pissed at you... well some of them are criminal organizations, and will kill you. As for the others: you're probably a hitman, so they'll either arrest or kill you. In combat, etc... well, not so free form (or at all). This will be using the BESM (that's a link to the system, kids) system. If you have any trouble understanding any of it, that's fine, just ask me. Also, there will be some home rules. Firstly, the only classes allowed will be Adventurer, Gun Bunny, Hot Rodder, Martial Artist, the adjusted for BESM fighter and rogue classes, and... I GUESS, Samurai and Tech Genius (However, items of power shall be my bitches. The best you'll get is a kick ass gun or something. This isn't sci-fi). Secondly, no magical special abilities. I'm not going to bother listing them all, but if you look at one and think, "There's no way for this to physically really happen," don't try to buy the ability. You won't get it. Thirdly, guns will be your god. They will have their damage adjusted up. Fourthly, getting shot will be your bane. You will have 1/3 of the hp indicated in the rules, and going below -10 hp WILL mean death. However, to offset this, slightly, I am going to have a 'body area hit' chart made up, which will be used. A shot to your arm or leg can not kill you, and will have its damage divided by four, as that you're only losing life from bleeding. If it lands on your head, however, damage is multiplied by four. If it's a gun shot, you just plain die. Torso hits are the only place you'll take normal damage. Oh, and if you receive half of your hp or over in damage to a limb (before I adjust it down), that limb is disabled. If you receive over your full hp (again, before I adjust it down), that limb is blown off and you aren't getting it back. Fifthly, you're all human. Sixthly, static hp. You won't gain anymore HP after creation. This will be a 'gritty' RP. Characters will probably die if they don't act accordingly. Sheet should look like this: Name: Level: Discretionary Points: Class: Age: Height: Weight: Gender: Description: Abilities: Strength (Str) Dexterity (Dex) Constitution (Con) Intelligence (Int) Wisdom (Wis) Charisma (Cha) Base Attack Bonus: AC: Armour Rating: Hit Points: Energy Points: Skills: Feats: Attributes: Defects: Equipment: Bio: We'll be a level 5 campaign, with 42 discretionary points to spend. If anyone wants to join but can't navigate the creation they can ask me for help via PM or AIM. If, conversly, they want to join but they're lazy motherfuckers and just don't want to make a character, they can give me their character concept and I'll make a character for them. I can't guarantee it'll be good (you're being lazy, don't expect me to be non-lazy and twink at all), but it'll follow the concept. Also, this will probably be taking place on a more or less world wide scale... If a lot of people want to be normal police officers I may relegate it to one city (as that they'll have jurisdiction problems to get through whenever something happens outside their city). In that case I'll also probably limit it to one crime organization, as well... depending on where the city is. |
I just wanted to say that it sounds really interesting, and I'd like to participate. I'm not sure if I'll have the time though, so I'll just make my character sheet and then see what happens.
and that avatar... I'm just not going to ask. O_o |
Well, looks like there's not a whole lot of interest in this, which is too bad, because I'm certain it would be fun.
BESM really allows for a very wide range of characters, even with my 'reality' restrictions. You could be anywhere from a Spike-esque gunslinger, to a character like Jet Li's in Lethal Weapon 3 (the kick-ass martial artist who can disassemble guns held by other people), or anything inbetween. Also: when I say realistic, I don't mean completely 'everyone dies in a gun battle'. I mean more along the lines of what you see in action flicks. BESM allows for dodging like that... at really high levels I might even consider matrix-esque dodging. Mostly I'm just running it because I like RPs wherein there's an actual sense of danger for your character. There's a world of difference between being in a mexican stand off and knowing your character's life is in the hands of the GM (who likes you and hasn't killed off a character yet), and being in the same position with your character's life hanging on the whims of a die roll if you can't think of a way to end it. |
I'd be interested in participating if you decide to go ahead and go for it. Send me a PM if this ends up getting the green light.
(You may remember me, I used to RP on these boards a while back) |
I vaguely remember you, and it's got a green light so long as there's more than one or two people. I'd like to see at least four or five... more would be better due to the PvP dynamic I've kind of set up.

I'll make a character, shouldn't be too hard.
Edit: Why don't we just use D20 modern? Its altogether more suitable for a realisitic modern rp. |
So would it be correct to assume that the merc's job would be similar to the game Mercenaries? Keeping track of who hates you, who wants you, trying to balance the kills during missions, that sorta stuff? If so, I'd be a merc, although I'd ask you to construct my character stats.

Question:
When creating my character, should I take Attributes like Flunkies or Organization Ties, if I'm creating a mafia character? Or are those things assumed? |
You should take organisational ties as that there will be people without that protection (CMP, apparently), but only take flunkies if you're going to actually have some of your OWN flunkies (being higher up and having people working directly under you, or a sect that is loyal only to you). Flunkies that are assigned alongside you on a mission by mission basis are assumed.
Also, defects like conditional ownership or owned (in the case of the mafia [they may kill you if you try to leave, after all]) can be taken to offset that. And CMP: Yes, more or less, although a bit more dynamic and less number orientated. Like if you kill a mafia member and no one sees it to rat you out, you don't lose points with the mafia. In fact, they may hire you to go and find whoever did it and kill them, if they don't know. And Pyros, the reason we aren't using modern D20 is because I don't know the system very well/at all, and BESM should work fine. |
I would like to Join in.... PM me?
