MTG: Ravnica
What does everyone think of the new Ravnica set in Magic: The Gathering? With the new dual land cards (and complimenting dual casting mana costs) i think its one of the more powerful sets to come out. While Mirrodin was all about artifacts - this set appears to be about the creatures. Even high mana cost creatures have CONVOKE to get them out faster, and the with instants that have radience you can potentially effect all your creatures with one spell (or effect all your oppenents creatures) :p

Ravnica is amazing. There are so many awsome cards. My favorites so far are Lightning Helix, the new Dual Lands, Dimir Cutpurse, Glimpse the Unthinkable, and the guildmages. I can't wait until the rest of the block comes out, there will be so many cool colorful decks flying around. I also really want the Izzet (Blue/Red guild) dual lands (or even the bounce lands) to come out so I can stop getting so land screwed in my U/R splice deck.
I used to love radiance until I saw one card, Quickchange. Radinace got SHAFTED by that card. Now I love transmute. ;) |
I'm mostly waiting for some good... better instants for my Nezumi deck. It's already pretty good. It won't hold itself in a big tournament, but it works! Anyway, currently the only Ravnica card I've got in it is the Gleancrawler.
It's instant Ninja revival! No worries about my ninja getting cut down, they just get back up! You gotta love it... But I'm looking for some better cardremoval and -revival monsters and instants/sorceries/aura's(?). And I believe Ravnica will provide. |
The main problem with radience is that if your opponent is playing the same color as you it doesn't generally help (pumping your creatures pumps theirs too) I'm loving all the new token stuff..it's really excessive and crazy. And thats what makes it great. Plus that Wraith of God card for all non-tokens (can't remember what it's called)
I'm totally loving the dredge abilities. =) |
It's nice to have new duals that I can fetch with Land Grant. And Razia's a lovely addition to my Shapeshifter deck (it minors in reanimation)- esp. as I busted a foil one. I'm glad to see Saprolings back, even if there's only one card so far that's good enough to be mixed with the Invasion-era stuff. I expect Saproling support to get better. And I'd very much like to get more of that red ability-misdirection spell. For Transmute, there's nothing worthy of Type I play yet (unless you really like Mana Drain), but that too could change soon.
Out of the box I busted, all I'm playing with at the moment is Dimir Shapeshifter, Razia, and the U/B dual. I have the B/G dual, but it could only go in my Charbelcher deck at this point, and taking out a Bayou for it would be stupid as hell. I'd be running the free Naturalize and the free (2/3)Giant Growth if I played green. |
Ravnica is what happens when you leave the Invasion block and Urza block in the same file cabinet for too long. They get lonely, and eventually breed. I have to admit I like this. It promotes a very wide range of deck types, with many variants of each. They learned their lesson from Mercadian Masques. It'll get even more interesting with the addition of the LOST ICE AGE EXPANSION that will be released during this block and will be TOURNAMENT LEGAL! It is a fine time to be a Magic player; with the return of gold cards, they ensure a healthy tournament that is balanced and diverse.

Oh boy this set looks good. I haven't seen a card in it I don't like. I mostly like the Blue and Black cards, as that is my favorite color combination and the set adds a TON that I could add to my Blue/Black Mill/Beatdown deck. Can anyone say Glimpse the Unthinkable? 10 cards for 2 mana is rediculous, as well as the new dual lands i can add for better mana balance.
Red/White also looks really good. Has a lot of defensive cards which is what I like about white. |

I, uh, actually hate Ravnica. I also hate Champions, Saviors, Mirrodin, Darksteel....
I really just hate all of the 8th Edition format cards. They're ridiculously overpowered in comparison to everything from the original blocks like the three Urza's, original, unlimited, Alliances, Empires, Dark, etc etc etc. Like radiance; Disenchant for two, targets all colors. Or there's that angel I saw: Prop all colors when tapped. You can untap it whenever you play a spell. It's just too damn good. I can make a unique goblin deck from nearly anything of the older sets, why should I include something like Ben Ben Akki? |
I'm with Mirai on this one. The last set that I absolutely loved was Legions, and even that was a bit overpowered at the time. Sure, I use cards from all of these newer sets, but only because you pretty much have to in order to be competitive.
