It’s one of those things you don’t want to believe could actually happen, but then it does, and you’re just like, :gonk: ,because you don’t know how else to react. What were all these people thinking? I guess I know what the fiancée was thinking, but what about the rest of them? What was going through their heads that made them think this was normal police procedure? Sodomy? Jumping Jacks? I also find it oddly fitting that the janitor was the only one with enough common sense to go “What the fuck?” and try and figure out what was going on.

Edit: I remember the experiment with the “patient” and the electroshock that showed people are far too compliant with authority, but I never thought it was as bad as this.

People are so dumb.

Anyone who falls for that deserves it.

And you had to know the caller was thinking "This is working out better than I ever could have imagined..."

MasterOfMagic 11-17-2005 06:31 PM

They are all most definately stupid. Strip searching her? Looking for a stolen purse? Uh...not only should the whole "over the phone" thing ring a bell or two, but how the hell is strip searching her gonna help find the purse? Its not like she could stuff in in her clothes without it being painfully obvious.

I can understand being dumbfounded for just a little while, just because this is so...out there. But a minute or two after the manager was told to have the girl take off her clothes, rationality should have set in. Surely. So idiotic......

I haven't heard of this before. What'd it involve?

I doubt it, considering he had been making these calls for a while, and getting similar results. That's right, folks. Things like this happened MULTIPLE TIMES. *shakes his head*

A warning sign of an overly compliant world. We all need to start pulling on our chains at least once and awhile. "HE wants me to do WHAT? Screw that!"

Jumping jacks. Sure. What did they expect that to do? The movement and lead spreading would remove any possibility she hid it up #@# !&*^&*^& ?

This is one of the many reasons why I don't want to work in the fast food business. I mean sure, the customer having it his way is fine and dandy, until he desires you to get nude and jump around. What really should have tipped them off that it was phony was the realization that the Police rarely call you, and a strip search is only okay if officers are present, and they'll usually try and get an officer of the same gender to watch the proceedings.

Once almost all clothing is removed and searched (quickly I might add), then the person's free to redress. I suppose some people aren't very knowledgeable about the justice system and only know that they're supposed to do what Police tell them.

Glad they caught the asshat too.

I sort of hope this is a reflection of the fast food industry rather than humanity as a whole. Also:

Well, to be fair, that was when the manager's fiance was in the room. He probably wasn't too worried about whether it was a real cop or not. I mean, you know no officer is going to tell you to have them preform a "sexual act". Yet he went along with that.

I'd say he was just enjoying the ride. Not a good thing, but at least we know it wasn't a matter of someone thinking jumping jacks being acceptable.

Skyshot 11-17-2005 07:43 PM

This has been going on for a while, as described by Snopes. (Read the commentary, not the urban legend.)

Personally, I can't picture people being this trusting of someone on the phone claiming to be a cop, but then, I'm probably slightly more paranoid than the average citizen. I don't think the police is going to be offended by a demand of actual proof before doing something like this. Of course, I believe I saw something in there about waiting for one to arrive, which they should have done before starting the search anyways.

(Also, I had the "virtual voyeurism" thing figured out before actually reaching that point in the article. Score one point for Skyshot.)

This is the most horrible thing I have ever seen. You really never think something like this could happen.

Don't cops usually go check things out for themselves when a crime is reported? I can't believe he went along with a "sexual act". No wonder she called off the engagement.

I just feel really sorry for that poor girl. But ya gotta think why would she even go along with a sexual act or jumping jacks. I wouldn't have taken my clothes off in the first place without an officer present. I guess you really never know what you would do until you get into a situation like that.

Psycho Mantis 11-17-2005 08:21 PM

If the janitor had enough common sense to realize the whole thing was bullshit, then everyone else involved really has no excuse except that they are 'teh stupid'.
