Fable: The Lost Chapters
I got this game a week ago, and I loved it. I liked the first Fable a lot, and when I found out that this was coming out, I couldn't wait for it. And now that Clevinger brought it up, I figured I could start talking about it now.
Basically, it's an extended version of the first game. It has all the stuff the first game had, plus included some quests that they didn't have time/resources to put in the first one. There aren't many appearance additions other than a few tattoos and some new helms. The big addition is near the end, where they included the quests that had involved the lighthouse and dragon. Also, they now have a good version of the Sword of Aeons, so in case you followed the good path, you won't miss out. |

I liked the first Fable, but was a bit disappointed that it wouldn't allow me, at the end, to just take the sword without killing Theresa or throwing it into the vortex. Bah, I guess I just demanded too much.

well, yeah, but when you're talking about a game whose point is the shallow exploration (not in theory, but in application) of moral choices, you need to have an end-game decision like that. The Lost Chapters was good, in my opinion, but it just really struck home the point that it was braod, but shallow. I liked the Age system, though, and with a better reworking of a moral code (especially when it comes to punishments for being evil, for what good is morality if there are no good punishments for not following it? ostracism doesn't really matter if the characters are as one-note as they are, and I can't think of another punishment other than death, and death is unacceptable. Also, there's never been a game dealing with the motivation for moral choices, to my knowledge. That's my interest when it comes to morality. Say, Jade Empire, for example. You could be a hero just because of the girl/guy at the end, or you could be a hero because you want glory, or you could be a hero because you want to do the right thing, or any shade in between those three or even something completely different. An exploration of those causes would be interesting to me, not these "choose this if you want to be more good, choose this if you want to be more evil" decisions, which is how the moral systems I've played with (KOTOR, Jade Empire, Fable, Black and White, even Planescape Torment to a degree) have functioned. Now, I'm not sure if it's possible for such a game to exist, but it'd be nice if such a game did), the inevitable sequel would rock my socks off.

I recently beat the Lost Chapters, after having beaten the Xbox version when it first came out, I must say this game is much better. One of the best things about the game is that it adds quest that seem like they should have been in the first game to start with.
Briar Rose now appears more than once; in the Xbox version she shows up once near the end to help in a fight. Their is now appoint to visiting the Grey House; before you could visit the house and see something, and any idiot could put 2 and 2 together to figure out what happened, however you could never do anything with that knowledge. Now you can. The additions at the end of the main story make it seem more epic. Now that guy you defeated (Jack of Blades) is more than your standard I want REAL ULTIMATE POWER, no matter what havoc it unleashes upon the Earth villian. Now he seems like a more epic foe, and you are the prophosized hero to stand against him. The side quests make the game seem more alive; previously I just flew through the main quest. Now I'm stopping and helping two love birds come together, and collecting books for the local schoolhouse. Heck I even own my own brothel now! The game still has some faults though. For one there needs to be a expression bar somewhere on the screen. I know theirs the quickaction bar, but when your a mage-anything combination you find yourself using that for spells. The controls could be better, but it seems as if the developers were unwilling to change too much from the xbox version (my keyboard has a lot of keys, why am I holding shift to get to my magic, and then why do I have to cycle between two spells at a time). And while I like having a character that ages and changes as I progress through the game. Why doesn't the rest of the world change some more. I've been married to the same woman for twenty years and she hasn't aged a day. |
For someone that's new to Fable... Should I get the extended version or the first? Which is more fulfilling?

Getting the "Extended version" Is basically the same thing as the original version, they just added more stuff. It's not like it's a sequel, and there's plot points you missed beforehand. It's just added on.
Extended, anyday. |
My apologies for the "longest damned statement within parentheses." I was just venting about Fable, which had promised so much (I'm not even talking about the hype, I'm talking about the choices in childhood, and my hopes about how they would grow more complex as time went on (turns out that DARE YOU BREAK THE BOXES???? was the template for most of the moral decisions) and failed to deliver, in my opinion (on that front, anyway). So....yeah.

Might I add that Jade Empire was done beautifully, as the Path of the Closed Fist was more centered around harder, more 'it's-your-responsibility' actions. Evil? Debatable.
I loved Jade Empire. |
