Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach

There was another thread on the same topic...it has been slain by the mighty beast of Time...but the progress merits a revival!

The up and coming MMORPG is in the closed beta/stress test phase right now, and it's looking sexy. I remain cautiously optimistic, because most MMORPG's look "sexy" when they aren't released yet. Still, the way Turbine is working everything seems to really click with my RPG gaming style. As a native to first-person shooters, the combat system looks very friendly (realtime, like Neverwinter Nights but to even get a dice roll you have to physically aim and hit them with your mouse/hotkey/whatever).

Stress tests! I've applied and been accepted into it, and the game is already pre-ordered too. According to EB Games I'll have roughly 20 days of play time before the game is launched in full, which is dandy. They are opening subscription (free) for Stress Test 2 right freaking now, I suggest those interested grab the beta keys before the frothing horde of fans overwhelm their servers and steal all of them (if they haven't already).

I already have most of my real-life friends getting the game, but my next best choice for a party would probably be some cool NPFers. Yeehaw. I'm going to be a rogue!

I borrowed a friends' FilePlanet account, and it sent it to HIS e-mail. whoops.

But hell yes, I'm looking forward.

My friends and I plan to play on the Wayfinder server during the ST, figured I would post that here in case NPF wanted to semi-coordinate servers so we could party up in the future (12 person dragon slaying runs? Teehee!)

Just signed up for my ST key, will install tonight and see what it is all about. Will be on the Wayfinder server if possible, and will attempt to have a character name of Lothair :D

My only complaint is, Eberron  , why eberron, Grrrrr.. silly wizards and attempting to change their core world... They should just stick to Forgotten Realms, now that's a World I'd like to MMORPG in... Heck even the boringness that is Greyhawk would be better than Eberron...

(Sorry, just not a fan of Eberron, in case you couldn't tell..)

You guys got into beta? I want in.

Also, Turbine made it. Didn't they make Star Wars Galaxies, or am I thinking of someone else? (Uh-oh.)

Monkey 12-14-2005 10:50 AM

not in beta chipper, in stress test, just go to fileplanet and sign up. And was any one else aware that Turbine is making a LOTR mmorpg?? just read This

Turbine's MMO history include Asheron's Call 1 and 2 if I recall correctly, though I've played neither.

I did however play DDO for about 12 hours non-stop, which gives a decent indictation of how entertained I was. There are problems, but it's the stress test so that's to be expected. There is still a problem with class PvM ability, but diverse groups are definitely a necessity.

As an example, in a group of one rogue, one wizard, and one sorcerer it took us 2.5 hours and 3 respawns to finish one of the "long" quests. In a group of the same rogue, wizard, and sorcerer, plus a paladin, it took 30 minutes and no respawns. Yeah...

Wayfinder was the only server up, and my username is Azisien, because I'm creative like that.

Ya they did make AC1 and 2.. and Now DDO and LOTRO.. not sure of anything else (if anything else) they have made. Hoping to get on DDO this weekend. I am excited about it, and being a LONG time D&D fan, it better be damn good. I'm not too excited about this "forced to group" type mentality, I understand it (D&D has always been about a "group" of adventurers complementing each other's skill sets), hopefully the provide new and innovative ways to group up rather than spamming "LFG lvl 10rogue lvl10 wizard lvl 12cleric for random quest X" over and over.. WoW's meeting stone are interesting, mostly uneffective in my experience, but interesting. I guess I shall wait and see what they come up with.

Dammit, so they've already announced who's going to be in the stress test and who won't be?

Dammit all, I didn't get in. Dammit!

Azisien 12-14-2005 06:42 PM

I'm in the Stress Test, not the Beta. The Stress Test lasts for 45 days only, from tuesday until saturday. According to the EB Games pre-order, I'll also get into the beta, but not yet.

There is a built-in party search system, but I either don't know how it works (yet), or it isn't fully functional (yet). At the moment most party recruitment is going to a tavern and asking for X level X class to join party. So far it really hasn't been a problem for me because:
a) I'm trying to play just with people I know anyway.
b) There's always eager people sitting in the taverns.

As expected (and I suppose it rubs off PnP too), fighters and barbarians and the like have a supreme leg up. I made it to 2nd level easily in a few hours with an AC-heavy fighter, compared to nearly 14 hours invested into my rogue (and only 90% complete 1st level).

Anyway, if you have any questions about the game, I'm not terribly far yet but I've got a good "taste," I'll be glad to discuss it via PM.
