Avatar-Esque RP: Sign-ups

Long before Aang was born, the four clans (The Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads) were entrenched in the longest peace ever known.

Although their still existed the petty in-fighting common to nations that have been for countless eons, infintesimal arguments magnified by ignorance and time, and occasional Spirit world collisions, the majority of the world was in a comfortable state.

In this age, when all had the capability to bend their respective elements but not always the drive, the Avatar was born into the Earth Kingdom, quickly sheperded into the most densely protected, and has been training in the art of Earthbending ever since. She is currently eight.

Because an 8-year old cannot be expected to train in all the bending practices AND perform the active peace-keeping duties associated with the Avatar (bridge between the Spirit and Physical, all around mediator and such), the four clans came together to propose a solution. Because vast tracts of armies would prove too superfluous and unneccesary for the few troubles of some backwards village, they proposed a simpler solution, one that would involve all, willing, members of the world: A volunteer corps.

For those who could not gain entrance into their respective army or higher class, the corps would perform the peace keeping duties of the single Avatar in a group. As a side benefit, it would also promote inter-clan friendships, although the primary reason was still to appease the various problems affliciting their small base villages.

You are a member of this corps, and we are all a small group on its first assignment, investigating the problems afflicting a small village at the base of the Western Air Temple.

Name:
Age:
Appearance:
Items:
Bending Style: (Water, Earth, Air, Fire)
Bending Prowess: 1-5 (1 being beginning Katara, 5 being a near master) (Everyone is a bender but that doesn't mean we are a world of masters. If you say you're a 5 and then pull out some Blue-Spirit style weapon prowess I will reprimand you in the RP)
Weapons: (If any. Feel free to say "My mitts")
Bio:

My character...

Name: Yuuyan (goes by Yuu)
Age: 23
Appearance: Wears simple brown cloth clothes and keeps his bow and arrows strapped to his back. Keeps his smooth black hair in a ponytail.
Items: Quiver of red-tipped arrows.
Bending Style: Fire
Bending Prowess: 1
Weapons: Arrow
Bio: When he was a child, Yuuyan's parents took him to see a fortune teller, a family tradition, with the expectation that he would recieve the same message every other male of his family had been given: A devotion to the well-being of his family, a well grounded study of Firebending, and a sense of pride in his Nation.

Yuuyan heard a different future: In his personal telling, the fortune teller read the bones and predicted that his name would live on, not through his offspring but through his followers. He would become the most famous practitioner of his craft and although he would be forgotten his skill would be remembered eternally.

Now, as the Avatar was currently two cycles away he deduced that becoming the premiere Firebender was a little out of his reach, so he looked to the more physical crafts he could delve into. The arts bored him, he proved too stubborn-minded to embrace religion, and the only thing he wanted to be remembered for was combat. After searching through his family geneology he came across a great-great-so on aunt-or-something that had once staved off a great raid or somesuch armed only with a bow.

Being known as the greatest archer appealed to some aspect of Yuuyan, and after acquiring a bow and learning to fletch he began to practice, much to his family's chagrin, who had expected another Firebender.

In desperation they attempted to enroll him in the military, but the Fire Nation would except someone who had no interest in the art of furthering his bending, so he was left on his own.

After the corps opened, with its promise of far away travel and adventure, promised a chance to train archery on new targets. This will be his first mission.

Name: Shi Tuhan (Tuhan to you, youngster!)
Age: 52
Appearance: Wears a long robe that covers most of his body. On his robe, several medals are pinned to the chest area. The medals were awarded for his fine work in the Earth Kingdom's army when he was still enlisted, and he takes great pride in them. His hair is long and white. Strapped to his back is a very large jug. His body is thin, and he carries a walking staff everywhere he goes.
Items: His walking staff, and the Secret Ally.
Bending Style: Earth
Bending Prowess: 5
Weapons: Earth bending abilities and the Secret Ally
Bio: Shi Tuhan is the new avatar's grandfather. Though he is strict in her Earthbending training, he loves her dearly. He would give his life for her, if need be.

In his younger days, he was known as the Rock Coffin General. This name came from his special move and his use of the Secret Ally. The Secret Ally is the name he gave to the jug he carries on his back. The jug is filled with a large assortment of sharp rocks and pebbles. As such, even if the environment makes it hard to use his bending powers on it, he still has access to earth to bend. His specialty move is to envelop the enemy in the rocks like a coffin, and crush them in the stones.

When he heard that they were creating a volunteer group, he scoffed at first. However, he knew that he was getting on in years. Other than working to further enhance his bending abilities, there really wasn't much else to do with his life. So, he decided to join the volunteer group to keep himself useful. He likes to finish missions as quickly as possible so that he can go home and enjoy his time with his granddaughter.

His physical abilities are limited, but his bending is extremely skilled. All of the years he spent in the Earth Kingdom army taught him military tactics that could be useful.

Name: Kalo
Age: 22
Appearance: He keeps his long, red hair pulled back with a bandanna. His eyes are black, and he generally smirks. He wears black clothes with a red cloak. He has one red glove and one black.
Items: Under his cloak, he has a utility belt with climbing gear and survival gear.
Bending Style: Air
Bending Prowess: 2
Weapons: Kalo generally uses a scimitar and throwing knives. He also has needles in his belt.
Bio: Orphaned at a young age, Kalo had a hard childhood. Being passed from relative to relative, it seemed nobody wanted him around until he was thirteen and showed aptitude for bending. He was quickly sent off to the Air Temple to train. The monks there seemed to accept him where his own family wouldn't. He couldn't be sure if they truly cared about him or his rising skill in the art of bending. Feeling like the only reason he was wanted anywhere because of his potential, Kalo fled from the Temple at sixteen and since then has been trying to prove his worth. He feels like he has to prove himself to the world, as well as himself, if he wants to truly earn his place among men.

Premonitions, no 10 year old would ever be a master in bending. He should be at least 20. Also, they would not think that he is the avatar, since he is a water bending. Avatars are born in a cycle, Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. Since he is a water bender, he couldn't be the avatar.

Since everyone is a bender, would all Air Nomad children be raised in the temples? If so, Kalo should have grown up in a temple with monks.

Also, since I enjoy the show very much, I feel as though I should include some more information that CMP did not.

All of the bending styles are based on a style of martial arts. Water is Tai Chi, Fire is Shaolin Kung Fu, Earth is Hung Gar, and Air is Ba Gua.

All bending involves some sort of movement, usually involving the hands.

Firebenders fight with their Kung Fu. They just add a firey extension to their attacks. So a punch comes with a fireball. Or a block becomes a firey block. Though, a firebender can do more then that, since a firebending entertainer created a fire dragon and had it fly around.

Airbenders tactics are avoid and evade. They are the most agile, so they dodge a lot (This includes running up walls and ceilings).

Waterbenders keep their distance and use water/ice to hit their enemies from a range. Lots of ways to do this.

There has only been one real fight with an Earth Bender, and for the most part he kept Aang away from him (Turning the ground to sand to trap Aang, for example) while throwing rocks.

Firebenders are the only benders who can make their elements. The other three need their elements nearby to bend them (Though Airbenders always have air).

Firebenders can create smoke as well as fire. They are also the only benders so far to have been able to bend without moving (All they did was heat up their bodies to melt snow)

Airbenders can fly with the help of a glider. They also can run fast and jump high.

Waterbenders can heal, but not all of them. Female waterbenders from the north aren't allowed to use bending for combat (Assuming the traditions in the show date back to this time).

Earth benders can only control rocks, dirt, sand, and other earthy things. Metals don't count.

Aha! I'll go back and edit my post a bit to put him in the Temple in place of a rich relative...

I've never seen the show, so yeah...

Premmy 12-16-2005 03:47 PM

okay will change the avatar bit, but he's not a master just really powerfull
the whole idea is that he's too strong to be that young

IHateMakingNames 12-16-2005 03:49 PM

But 5 == near master. Being a powerful bender for a young age would probably be a 3. Aang's a 5, and he's the avatar.

Raiden 12-16-2005 03:52 PM

And basically, the higher your bending rank, the lower your physical abilities, as was stated.

If you're a one, it's alright to be pulling out a lot of your martial art style. At a one, your bending will really not be worth for much other than enhancing your fighting or weapon style.

If you're a five, you're rarely going to be physically fighting anyone. To become a master, you need to spend years training to control your power. After all, a bending won't work if you make even one mistake in your form.

Really, if you're a five, you shouldn't even be carrying a weapon, since the chances of you making any use of it is low.

Also, the bending alignment/tribe you choose to join will restrict what kind of weapons you can use.

As IHMN pointed out, each bending style is affected by a certain martial art. As such, only certain weapons are used in those styles. I recommend doing some research to find what weapons you use.

Example, let's take the Air Nomads. Their style is based off of Ba Gua, a martial arts style that increases one's wisdom, inner health, and creates a powerful self-defense. Their style incorporates such techniques as 8 Palms and is based on the essence that your movement should be fast, agile, and unpredictable. They never stop in their attacking. Every move is linked to another, and their body is constantly moving. The weapons employed in this style are light and fast, such as the Chinese Broadsword, Deer Horn Knives, or the Iron Fan. There's no way in hell they'll be using any kind of weapon that slows down their performance. This is the martial arts expert/enthusiast in me, but if I see an Air Bender with an axe or hammer, I will verbally bitch slap you.

Really, do research before you make your choices. Well, those who intend to be low bending and high physical activity, anyway.

[EDIT]: Premonitions, being a master isn't so much being really smart. Being a master means that not only are you able to bend, but you have all the motions memorized, all factors are taken in, etc. In the Avatar world, you can't simply wave your hand and expect bending to happen. Any bending move is pulled off through a series of intricate and complicated movements. Even the slightest wrong move, like having a finger in the wrong place, will cause it to not work. The fact is that, at such a young age, there is no way your character could possible have had the time to memorize and master all the moves. And, if he uses them sloppily and carelessly, then he's not a master. If anything, he's a 3.

Premmy 12-16-2005 03:55 PM

*fixes character* check and check, Will we be going through some kind of enlisting thing or will this start at the beginning of a mission after we've all met?
edit: i was thinking more like too powefull like if he flinches too much he causes
a tsunami (exaggeration) kind of thing his motions causes more force in the water so even the basics do far more than they should but okay a three gothca. not a master just really strong
