Addiction to SSBM?
Ok, I work with a Marine and EVERY DAMN DAY after we get done with work he throws on Super Smash Brothers Melee, and when some of us want to do something diffrent, he gets all bitchy and complains that "Oh, you get to have your time but I don't get to have mine?" Hell, even as I'm writing that at 1:04 AM, he's behind me playing that damn game. Also he thinks he's such a badass that he'll challange everyone in the shop to fight agesnt him in it, and yet I see him get womped by two level-9 CPU opponets.
Also while he's playing he's always talking smack and making crazy battle noises. In short, it's driving myself, and the 7 others in my shop crazy. We tried hiding it a while ago, but he just went ballistic, accusing us of swiping it and tearing the place apart looking for the disc. Any advice on how to deal with him? |
Erm...some sort of positive-reinforcement scheme? Like a bit of a reward if you guys get to play something else for, say, an hour or half-hour. That's just off the top of my head, tho'--"attracting more flies with honey than with vinegar" and that style of thing.

What you should do is gag him, roll him up in carpet, and tie him to the middle of an active volcano...oh wait...
But seriously, you should make a deal with him to limit his gaming, and buy an egg timer to time his usage. Also, you could buy him his own TV (they are only like $50 these days) and hook the Gcube up to his room. He can play in private that way, and you don't have to listen to him. Or there is one that everyone forgets...and that is to try and reason with him. Surely he can't be that bad. If worse comes to worse, use my earlier suggestion, or destroy the disk (ya, you might have to do it. He won't be happy, but being so addicted is unhealthy.). Good luck! |
If possible, just find someone better than him to train one of you in the art of SSBM ass-kickery. Or practice. Then whenever he wants to play, just beat the snot out of him. Losing repeatedly takes the fun out of gaming.

However for someone who thinks he's all that at the game, then yes he might not like it after getting pwned enough times. Ego does that to you. Also an idea: Put him down. Like a dog. Don't ban, I was joking. |
Hold an intervention? Or you just deny it every time he asks until he finally gives up - cold turkey!
I know someone who was doing the same thing with Halo when he first got it - I'm not great as FPSs so I usually give up on them early and let others play - however he wouldn't let me off, eventually I just started to lose on purpose until it wasn't fun anymore for him. It took a while though, even if it was obvious that I was attempting to die. |
Force him to play Hyrule Temple matches. Then play as Mewtwo.
If you get good, you can arrange it so he never gets to freakin' touch you. (my brother is infuriatingly good at getting cat-boy to dance around me. STAY IN ONE PLACE SO I CAN PUNCH YOU!) |

1. Tie him to a chair. 2. Hook him up to a car battery, or alternately put duck tape on any hairy part of his body. Hell, you could even do both. 3. Yell "Super Smash Bros Melee!" and turn on the current or pull off the tape really fast. This make his subconsious mind associate the thing he loves with pain, thus making him not want to do it. 4. Repeat for 5-8 hours as desired. There, problem solved. |
First of all, when you want to play something different, remind him of all of the time that is used daily as "his time."
Also, if you can, get good at the game! Whoop him good. |
I concur with the latter suggestion from Zak. Get good at it and beat him so badly he wont want to play anymore.
If that fails, then get the 3 other people to team on him and then make it so that the last place gives up controller, last place being him, he gives it up, have rotate through for 3 or 4 games with everyone playing normally, when he gets back in, everyone team on him agian. Should solve your problem with him quick enough as he wont be playing it much then, but watching. |
