Let's Get Ready to Rumble! (help needed)
Now, before the mods drop the banhammer on me for opening a Vs. thread, let me state that this is in fact NOT a Vs. thread, contrary to what the title may lead you to believe.
That said, let me explain my situation: I have just obtained my first job about a month ago as a basketball announcer, along with a friend of mine. This basically means I get to belt out my excellent Michael Buffer impression while getting free admission and snacks at my high school's basketball games. What I need help with is this: in addition to announcing, my friend and I are in charge of DJing music, which is played for 30- to 60- second intervals during quarter breaks and timeouts, and 10- to 15- minute intervals during halftime and in between games. I need help finding said music, and I'll appreciate any and all help that's offered. One more thing: the girls' teams think that they're the ghettoest of gangstas, so I especially need help finding music in that sort of genre. Also keep in mind that anything explicit will get me fired, and I love my job... Once again, thanks a bunch! |
My recommendation is (if you can find time/afford it) to go to a college game in your area, listen to what music they are playing, and then find those songs and play them. Hockey is good for this sort of thing too, as they are always stopping and starting.
Finally, ask the players what music they'd like to hear. I imagine they'd get a kick out of hearing their suggestions played during the game. |
I can say that i have never ever been to a basketball game without hearing the song "Oh Ellin" by Gob. That song should definatly go in there.
And just because you have the power, you should play the Hockey night tonight song and see how people react. |
Want music for the girls' team? I have a suggestion. Just go to almost any of blogs made by girls! It really works!
But seriously, ... Ok. I got nothin'. How general is the term "explicit" in this case? Ok, I suggest listening to a rap radio station from where you live, see if it "beeps" too much, and go lyrics hunting. I do that and I don't even have a job. Minus the rap part that is. XD |
Gurusloth: coincidentally, a minor league hockey team just started up near where I live, and a buddy of mine has season tickets. I'll be sure to check that out sometime.
Major: I'll look into it. Sk3L: "Explicit" would be anything that would normally be censored on the radio. Basically, F-bombs, S-bombs, racial slurs, etc. Also, inappropriate subject matter would fall under this category ("Baby Got Back" got me an odd look from my boss, even though he ok'd it seconds earlier). Basically, if you don't find it in a Homestar Runner cartoon, then I probably shouldn't be playing it at work. Also, my cowroker summed up the girls' taste very well: "If it isn't an offshoot of hip-hop or rap, then they won't like it." Luckily the boys aren't nearly as picky... |
Rap is so over-rated. Play some Mozart, man.
|
Wow. So basically, what I'm learning from this thread is that women have terrible taste in music.
...It seems so obvious now, like I should have known all along. |
Girls just want music they can dance to. Something fun and upbeat, most likely rap. You can also do the fun rock songs everyone loves. Nothing emo really. Don't want to bring down the mood.

Recently, I've been checking out the songs on the NFL Street 2 soundtrack, with some good results. Now, if I can track down my NBA Street Ver. 2 and NFL Street 1 games, I can probably compile a decent playlist from that alone. I'm still open to suggestions, though :D |

Why is it that dancing and sex are slowly converging? |
All-Star - Smashmouth
In Too Deep - Sum41 Im Just a Kid - Simple Plan It Just Takes Some Time - Jimmy Eats World And if you want to annoy some people, Mambo No. 5 by our dear sweat Lou Bega. Thats all I can think of right now. |

Low self-esteem. A girl thinks she needs to act a little bit more slutty because she isn't good enough being herself. High standards now-a-days. That's how I think of it anyway. |

But the butt-shaking, hip-gyrating, dry-humping hip-hop danceing? Yeah. I've got a problem with that. Needless to say, I was not a fan of the 'Thong Song' music video. |
One thing is objectifying women--the other is, 'we're both virile and horny and there's no justification for this dance other than to heighten or arousal of each other.' I think there's nothing wrong with that. If you'll recall, many people go to clubs for the sole reason of dancing raunchily.
Music suggestions: sports games love repetitive techno and formulaic rock. Try some 'famous' old techno songs like Castles in the Sky. |
I just remembered there used to be a series of CDs called Jock Jams, the contents of which was these type of songs. I dunno if you can find them or not anymore (or how current the songs are), but it might be worth hunting around some used CD sites.

I'm a fan of all things JEW. Pun! Figured he might want the correct song title. :P If you must play rap, I'd suggest "Let's Go" by Lil' John simply because it has the guitar part for Crazy Train. You should go with some older hip-hop instead of more recent rap. Play stuff like old MC Hammer songs or Tag Team. If you want to mess with everyone, go with Vanilla Ice. As far as the guys' games, just go with some rock and/or 70's and 80's metal that will get people pumped up. Go with things like "Welcome to the Jungle" and you'll be fine. |
Steve Miller, anybody?
|
Last night we had two Boys' games, and it was a total blast! Jim and I were blasting good music and cranking out killer commentary, and the audience enjoyed it so much they were dancin' during time-out music time...thingie. The cheerleaders busted some killer moves to our beats, as well. All thanks to a little experience and your suggestions.
That said, I'd still appreciate any more ideas flung my way, especially because our next work day is Tuesday with the Girls' league... |
