Who is Riddick, and why do I care?

I saw a trailer for the upcoming movie Chronicles of Riddick, and I have never heard of this. Its looks sci-fi like. Anyone know what this is about, and how far has Vin Diesel's career fallen into the sewer when he is the star and only in the trailer for about 5 seconds? Dont get me wrong, Vin Deisel sucks.

Riddick is from the movie Pitch Black or something like that. It wasn't a very good movie.

pitch black wasnt all bad, there were a few cool things going for it. a few. ok, so maybe not. at least it didnt look as fucking retarded as this new movie does.

Pitch Black was good if you really like the "oh-shit-its-an-alien-monster-we-gotta-get-the-hell-out-of-here-OH-GODAMN-I'M-DEAD" genre (Originating with Alien, of course). And I do. It wasn't spectacular though, but I've learned to forgive a lot of things about Sci-Fi movies, because I just don't see many good ones these days. I gotta take what I can get.

I hate Vin Diesel and every movie he's ever done...except Pitch Black. It really wasn't as bad as some of the newer sci-fi movies out there. I'll probably see The Chronicles of Riddick for the special effects, but I'm not counting on much of a story.

Obviously, none of you know anything about this film, and so I will educate you. I've known about it since it was a possible film, long before it was shot.

Here's the deal: Riddick is one of the few characters who survived at the end of Pitch Black. The movie was about a group of survivors of a ship crash on a planet with two suns, and ravenous creatures that only came out during the planet's regular eclipses twenty-six years apart. Riddick was a fugitive being brought in by a bounty hunter, and a very dangerous criminal. However, he had silvery eyes that could see in the dark, and thus became a useful asset to the survivors.

It was a very good film about faith, love, and redemption, if you could look past the monsters.

The Chronicles of Riddick is not one film, but a prequel trilogy to Pitch Black, involving the adventures of Riddick. From what I've heard about it, it delves deeper into the universe only hinted at in Pitch Black, and is more of an epic than the original.

I personally am looking forward to it.

Pitch Black was okay, but * SPOILERS *

it would've been a lot better if Riddick had died at the end. The ending we got didn't make any sense thematically. Riddick should have sacrificed himself to save the pilot, not the other way around. That would have wrapped up both Riddick and the pilot's stroy arcs nicely, with Rissick redeeming himself through his sacrifice, and the pilot finally taking responsibility for the survivors. Instead we got no indication that Riddick was anything more than the psychotic murderer he always was, other than a bullshit line about him "dying on the planet."

Well, yes DI, but we all know Vin Diesel is WAY too badass to die!

Really though... It wouldn't surprise me in the bit if that's how the writers had it in the first place, but Vin didn't want his character to die or something. He's ok... for mindless action, but I wouldn't put Vin Diesel in anything in which you want an actual plot. Just look at his name... it kinda says it all.

Of course... I could be wrong, and he MIGHT be a very good actor that just got type-cast into the hardass role... but, meh.

thank you Deckamster. Ive never seen Pitch Black, nor do I plan to, but at least I now know what this is all about. And knowing is half the battle.
