Valentine's Day Music
Dear forum-ers,
I'm a DJ at a local college radio station. My show is on Tuesdays from 2 to 4. Now, as I assume you all know, tomorrow is both Tuesday and Valentine's day. I know. It's wiggy. Anywho, as I will be doing my show, the Goat Show tomorrow, I was wondering if you guys could help me with some of the songs. The catch: I'd like most of the songs to be about love-loss and other things that will bum out everyone's good time. (Bumming out everyone's good time is a staple of my show my audience has come to enjoy. Also, I yell at the weatherman when the weather's bad outside.) So yeah, think of some songs that state how love sucks or how your girlfriend left you and was cheating on you. Oh yeah, no cursing. The FCC's really on our ass right now. I got this idea while listening to the new Willie Nelson CD. |
My Funny Valentine.
I mean seriously this isn't even an option, My Funny Valentine. I mean I'm pretty sure there is actually a law. Also, Can't Take My Eyes Off of You. No, neither one is very sad. That depress-me-even-more crap is for the birds. |
hey, how about "forgive me" by "evanescence" or
"behind blue eyes" by "the who" "my immortal" by "evanescence" "angel" by "judas priest" EDIT: "ghost of you" by "my chemical romance" "exodus" by "evanescence" note this one is an import i think oh and "broken" by "seether" featuring amy lee i shudder to mention it but, "wake me up when september ends" by "green day" maybe "imaginary" by "evanescence" note: there are two versions of this song for a non depressing one you should play "you" by "evanesence" |
"Where The Wild Roses Grow" by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (with Kylie Minogue, of all people). A nice romantic melody accompanying the old story of boy-meets-and-murders-girl.

Following that theme... "Use to Love Her" by Guns 'N Roses
"Black", My favorite Pearl Jam song And a few years ago my roommate got me listening to Brand New, and I'd suggest "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot". Ooh, and how about "Don't Leave Me Now" from The Wall? :p That's about all I can think of from my music collection... |

Pearl Jam, ditto, ditto, "Better Man." |
If you want something a little... different for your viewers, that still follows the theme, try "Delilah" by Tom Jones. It's an old school (and by old school, I mean VERY fucking old school--this is the guy who did What's up Pussycat) soft rock song about a guy who catches his girlfriend cheating on him and then stabs da bitch. Stabs her dead.
If you wanna go pure depressing, shoot for "Pollyanna" by One Line Drawing. Easily the most depressing heart-break song ever (the best part is that the singer sounds too weak to be actually singing). Want something a bit harder? Try I'm a Cloud or As I Watch the Sun Fuck the Ocean by Boy Hits Car. Two out of Three Ain't Bad by Meatloaf is another good depressing song--about how he doesn't love his girlfriend and how the only woman he ever loved didn't love him back. So sad. So sad. Wanna go a little country? Try Hurt by Johnny Cash. He cuts himself. 'Cause he's depressed. Yah. And, not really depressing, but still topical--Scenes from an Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel. If you don't know, it's a song which consists of his discussion with a woman at an italian restaurant about the popular couple in highschool. How they got married, couldn't support themselves, and ended up getting divorced. You can also find it hiding under the title of "Brenda and Eddie" (they were the popular steady, after all). Oh, and if you want one that isn't depressing, but very definately denies all that Valentine's Day is about, try "Instant Pleasure" by Rufus Wainwright. The first lyrics are "I don't want somebody to love me. Just give me sex whenever I want it, 'cause all I ask for is instant pleasure." Fun song, really. Speaking of Rufus, another good depressing one is Hallelujah. Love is just a cold and broken hallelujah. It isn't a victory march, yanno? |

Right over my head with that one. Murdering your girlfriend songs... I dunno, that one by Eminem? I think the Deftones have a couple of good kidnapping/rape songs. Lesse... oh yeah, for properly twisted Valentine's tales, Lola, by the Kinks, is an absolute must. I mean the absolute pinnacle of the genre. Shit, it practically is the genre. No curse words neither, just the tender romance between a naive young lad and his very, um, physically assertive paramour. |
"Jude Law and a Semester Abroad" by Brand New
"Radio" and "Jaked on Green Beers" by Alkaline Trio "Hear You Me" by Jimmy Eat World "My Friends Over You" by New Found Glory That's a few. I'll be listening to them. :( |
