Dumb Luck

This seems like the sort of thing we do here.

OK so in the last nine months I have managed to

1. Total a car

2. Get caught going 25 over the highway limit

3. Hit another car in the drugstore parking lot while backing out

I just got my insurance renewal today, and the company just dropped 90 dollars a month off my bill.

For a minute there I was ready to call them and be like "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?"

So anyone else gotten stupidly lucky in inexplicable ways?

I've had dumb unluck :(

I went and bought a guitar string, and as I was stringing it, it seemed to be excessively long, even for a guitar string. So, I cut a little off, and upon attempting to restring the thing, the string no longer even reached the tuning knob. So like...fuck. I broke a string, had to leave town to get a new one, and then cut the new one too short....ugh

My luck is typically horrible, and I've come to think that I only ever had a certain small allowance of "good" luck that slowly refills over a long period of time. At one point, I had a decent amount of luck built up around the turn of the century for some reason...

...so I decided to blow it all by beating this guy at "Puzzle Fighter" over and over again for week without actually paying attention or trying at all. This was back in 2001.

All in all, I think it was worth it.

My luck = slightly bad. Nothing horrible though. Most of the bad things that happen to me are the result of my procrastination.

I only have dumb luck in online video games :gonk:

The other day I fell of a roof and landed in a swimming pool, not 2 feet away from cement. Of course, it was like 30 degrees outside, so ya.

But better that than the concrete.

Also the pool hadn't been cleaned is 3 months. But honestly, I don't really care, I was stoked it had water in it, it was supposed to be drained 2 weeks ago.

I'd probably be dead otherwise. Or at least be hurt pretty bad.

I am the embodiment of dumb luck. I jsut get SOOO much of it.

Lets see, in this school year alone I have done

1. twice the speedlimit infront of a cop and not get pulled over

2. backed into a car and had the guy tell me to just keep going. no damage done.

3. not worn my school I.D in forever even though its required AND checked daily. no ISS or detentions for me yet.

4. sexually abused a teacher, and only got a "tell your mom about it and we'll forget this thing happened".

and thats about the worst I can think of.

I've got car trouble, not entriely unlike fifth's...

I in the last year have managed to get TWO pretty severe speeding tickets. Bad, but not horrible, eh? The ironic thing is though, that I am 99% percent of the time, a 100% safe driver. Never more then 5mph over the limit, seat belts, etc. All that.

I also, recently, rear ended someone. We pulled over and I was scared out of my wits that I was gonna have some big trouble, but the guy just shrugged it off and didn't want to deal with it. We stood around for a bit, and I was all 'Uh, so... you ok?' and he was like 'Um... yeah, I'm good." To which I replied "Oh. Good." He then got in his car and said "Alright, I'm outta here. See ya."

That was a lucky break. No one was ever the wiser...

Fifthfiend 02-28-2006 10:38 PM

Just so I'm clear, the tickets and crashes and such weren't luck, those were just that I am a ridiculous hazard of an idiot who should never be allowed within ten feet of a steering wheel.

That the insurance company somehow decided to reward my ineptitude is really the 'luck' part I'm getting at.

Luck? Luck... Oh, yeah, that thing! I spent all the luck in my personal reservoir a long time ago. I usually have dumb luck doing puzzles in RPGs, though.

Example:

I'll see an item and be like "Meh, maybe I can sell it." Then I'll totally forget about it. Then later in the game, I'll need that item to unlock the "Super-Awesome-Mega-Doom" weapon, and when the game says I have it, I'll be all "When'd I pick that up?"

Yeah, that's all I got.
