Yet Another Hadoken-y Hypothesis

Pardon me if this has already been mentioned - I did attempt to search for it, but searching for "Hadoken Theory" turns up a lot of threads, and there's a good chance I may have overlooked it.

As most of us doubtless know, Black Mage's Hadoken is a deliciously ingenious spell - sucking love out of the universe and converting it into reality-rending devastation. I really haven't seen anything quite as awesome since Megido Arc was fired the city of Tokyo Millenium in another world and another timeline. However, I can't help but wonder if the blatant-destruction aspect of the spell is the LESSER of its two effects, especially considering some of the people that Black Mage associates with-er, is acquainted to.

Specifically, White Mage. Now, consider this. White Mage, at one point, was responsible for the creation of a universe, due to a miscalculation by Sarda in his use of extradimensional space. Just which universe is unclear, but that still renders her God of that universe. Now, the method in which she brought about that universe's creation is consistent with Christianity's creation story in the book of Genesis. This would imply that White Mage, too, shares similarities with the Christian God, who is said to be "pure love and light."

Now, what I'm getting at is this: could it be that every time Black Mage launches his Hadoken, White Mage (since she is quite possibly the greatest source of love in the world) is being stripped of her ability to love others? I seem to notice that she's becoming increasingly more violent and decreasingly effective at her job - healing and nurturing. Could the Hadokens that Black Mage has been throwing around be the underlying cause?

Discuss, please.

It's an interesting theory if nothing else. I like it.

great theory. it'd be fun to think that black mage was constantly, if indirectly, making white mage hate everyone more.
if he keeps this up, she'll become pure darkness and hatred! Mwaha!

Urgh...you have a point there. If Black Mage uses his Hadoken every time he wants to destroy some insignificant thing -- like a bee -- or something much more important -- like Fighter -- then he would undoubtedly be sapping White Mage's ability to love and care away from her. She does seem to be having more violence with the world around her.

Perhaps she is only fueled by rage from having Black Mage around, misery from Black Belt -- her guardian -- dying with her unable to bring him back to life, and frustration with getting stuck with the "destined ones".

But if not, Black Mage is crushing his every way of getting to White Mage.

Exactly. Furthers the idea that the world exists to hurt Black Mage, doesn't it? Hadoken's his favorite spell, but each cast could potentially be lowering his chances of being accepted by the only person he's ever felt anything other than stabbity-laced hatred for. In addition, if I have my facts straight, he sacrificed children for the Hadoken ability, so that means that the Dark God(s) may have seen his lust-laden desires regarding White Mage coming, and decided that the best way to prevent Black Mage from falling in with the goody-two-shoes entirely was to kill several birds with one stone. After all, from the Dark God(s)' standpoint, it's win-win-win the whole way around.
  • Hadoken brings explosive, atom-rending DESTRUCTION to the world
  • Hadoken strips the world of love and causes divorce rates to spike, causing panic, havoc, and hatred to rise
  • Hadoken also reduces White Mage's ability to accept and love others unconditionally, which prevents her from doing anything but loathe Black Mage
  • Which increases the number of times Black Mage gets rejected, which only fuels his rage at the world, which gives him all the more excuse to launch Hadokens on little provocation
Lo and behold, a vicious cycle forms. A Dark God couldn't ask for much better of a thing to be entertained by. The best part is that, unless I'm mistaken, Black Mage has mentioned how Hadoken works in front of White Mage, and if I'm right about it affecting her, she hasn't even realized it!

However...

This is a pretty good counter-argument. It could be possible that it's her frustration with the ineptitude and lack of real heroism among the Light(bulb) Warriors, along with the grief surrounding the late Black Belt's fate and her inability to rescue him from it, could be what's causing her to be violent and ineffective at her job.

After all, I know what it's like to be forced to clean up after idiots. It does nothing good for one's sanity, faith in society, or morale.

I like this theory. Seems to actually have proof for it, which most theories i've seen don't. Congrats for coming up with a sensible one :) You have my support, if you want it lol

What getting at, turns out you weren't, then thought someone else would state, which they didn't, was this:

If she was supposedly "pure love", would not that mean sucking love from the world would deteriorate HER? Supposedly, God is the channel through which all love flows, and, like removing water from a river, the lack of love destroys Him. So, by casting Hadokken, BM is not erasing her abillity to love, but bringing her closer to death.

And that's my (what I thought was unoriginal) theory

Lucis 03-06-2006 07:09 PM

That's another possibility, and a good one, actually. The only problem is that, despite all the Hadokens that have been fired thus far, we've yet to see any physical deterioration in White Mage. Not to say that there isn't any (could be the ulterior reason behind the heavy robes), but there's yet no evidence of it.

Her emotional/spiritual degradation since her introduction into the comic, however, is plainly obvious. Episode 127, for your perusal, clearly shows that White Mage has begun doubting her mission and her faith. Episode 189 shows White Mage trembling with rage, begging her deities for forgiveness, and then visiting divine, flaming pain upon the form of Black Mage. Now if that isn't a blatant display of hatred-induced violence (something Black Mage indulges in regularly, and thus, HAS to be evil or at least incredibly spiteful,) I don't know what is. Not only that, but the aftermath of her action resulted in the death of an innocent living creature (admittedly a rather foul one, but still living) which promptly exploded and visited pain upon the rest of the Light(bulb) Warriors (Episode 190, for the curious.) Then we have Episode 198 which has White Mage casting aspersions on the Light(bulb) Warriors. Fighter is the only one she has anything nice to say about, but follows it up by calling him an idiot, and she doesn't even bother to support her claim against Red Mage, who probably would attempt to save the world, if nothing else for the huge experience rewards for accomplishing such a grand quest.

Now, I'll admit, White Mage has been violent before, especially back in Episode 26, through to Episode 28, but you don't see her doubting her faith in any serious way or insulting anyone, plus she's obviously defending herself from sexual harassment from BM, who is also stalking her. In fact, the moment that BM stops being a pervert toward her, in Episode 29, her attacks immediately stop and she actually pays the morally bankrupt black-magic casting fiend who just stalked her and sexually harassed her through the past five comics a compliment.

Now is it just me or has she become, in the space of 161 or so comics and at least one Hadoken, more bitter, spiteful, doubting of her faith and less forgiving?

Just for kicks, since I'm on a linking-spree, I hunted up every Hadoken between Ep 29 and Ep 127. Surprisingly, I can find but one. It's here. Oh, and this attempt at one.

Seran 03-06-2006 07:28 PM

You're right about that...
Ever since Black Mage's Hadokens after White Mage was introduced, she has become more angry with the world around her.

Maybe she was violent in the beginning to start with because Black Mage still used his Hadoken back then and before then.

I'd still like to know what happens to the love after being focused into a beam of destruction.
