FFX2 - Love it or hate it?

Go to town, fuckers!

MetalPsycho 04-04-2006 06:06 PM

I loved it, then I hated it, now I'm kinda...disclosed. I do love Rikku though. :D

Leon-the-Dark-Knight 04-04-2006 06:10 PM

Loved it, love Yuna and Riku, and FFX was awsome depite what others might say.

FFX-2. Let's not get into X. I have issues with X. A lot of issues. Mostly how it tried to be innovative in a way that would not piss off the fanbase, and how it failed its innovation roll with a natural 1.

But let's not get into that.

FFX-2. Haven't played it, never going to. Why? Partially because of their advertising based on sex appeal, partly because of their fan service, both of which I object to in Final Fantasy; partly because, of everything I've heard about it, nothing sounds good to me; partly because they made one of my favorite features of the FF series, the job class system, into an excuse for a Barbie-dress-up function.

Those are probably enough parts by themselves, though there are certainly more reasons that I don't ever intend on laying hands on it.

Muffin Mage 04-04-2006 06:25 PM

I tried for twenty minutes. I couldn't stand the thought of playing another twenty hours. Not unless there was flat-out lesbian action, and even then I'd probably give it a miss.

My verdict: 0 out of 4 kumquats.

Such is the plight of the unenlightened.:(

Then you really have no reason to be in a discussion about it, do you?

Your opinion has thusly been invalidated. It'd be like me telling you to NEVER eat sashimi. I mean, I've never had it, so I wouldn't actually KNOW what it tastes like, but I've seen it once, kinda. Oh and it has been described to me! It sounds totally gross! Ew. Seafood!

Seriously, not just you, but everyone, if you haven't played a game you have no buisness commenting upon how 'good' or 'bad' it is.

That's amusing, really it is.

I suppose you've never played a MMORPG, and gone grabbing clothes? I really wish I had easy access to the news post wherein Brian dissected this exact view point with satire, but the game was released too long ago to make finding the news post easy. At all.

Regardless, the point is this: most of the people who complain about that particular aspect have played/do play/enjoy playing other games wherin they play far more 'true' versions of the 'Barbie-dress-up' game.

SCIII's character creation? MUCH closer to 'Barbie-dress-up' than the job spheres. That's not to say I have anything against SCIII's character creation--in fact, I love it. As I assume most other people do.

However, the point I'm making is that bashing a game just because girls change into different outfits when they change class is retarded.

Hell, they did the same thing in every FF game that had different classes. The only differences were:
  • It wasn't as graphically complete.
  • You couldn't do it in battle.
  • There wasn't a (slightly) different version of the class outfit for each seperate character.
  • The method of unlocking different jobs.

And even your complaints about them advertising to sex appeal are worthless.

I could ALMOST see your complaint if FFX-2 was ever meant to be taken as a serious game. However, the problem still remains that he game isn't meant to be taken seriously, at least not until about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the way through it, if at all.

The story is cheesy. The way it's told is cheesy. Everything about it is cheesy.

What people have a problem comprehending is that this was NOT done on accident.

If FF8 was angsty-emo-drama, and FF7 was an action/romance, then FFX-2 was comedy.

Just like movies or books, the style of RPGs falls into different genres. FFX-2 is a very non-serious RPG.

Doing that may have been a mistake on Square's part, because every other Final Fantasy HAS been serious, and people went into the game thinking it would be serious. Once your pre-defined notions have been wronged, you're probably going to have a problem with whatever it is which wronged them.

This, however, is not a problem of the book/movie/TV series/game. It's a problem of the reader/watcher/player.

Taken for what it is--a quirky light hearted game with a good amount of comic cheese thrown in--FFX-2 is an extremely good game.

Taken as a 'serious' Final Fantasy, yah, it falls flat... despite the fact that the battle mechanics are some of the best the FF series has seen.

Vile 04-04-2006 07:47 PM

I don't really give a damn what you think of my opinion, but it was asked, and thus I gave it. Not personally, of course, but neither was anybody else's. As far as comedy goes, again, going by what I've heard, researched, and otherwise looked into—and I'm terribly sorry that that's all I've got—it also falls flat. It would appear to be, as you yourself said, cheesy—and that doesn't make for terribly good comedy. But then, I'm sorry. Maybe you like your comedy low-brow. Maybe you enjoyed the Charlie's Angels movies. Maybe you enjoy SNL. Maybe you like fart jokes. I don't know you, and I can't really say either way, but that kind of comedy just doesn't appeal to people who like to think very much.

Also, you seem to assume that I've heard bad things about it. A fair number of the people I've asked about it have liked it, and reported good things to me. Those good things, however, upon reflection and consideration, along with time delving into reviews, aspects of gameplay, and other sources of information concerning the game, I decided I didn't like.

Death Dealer 04-04-2006 07:56 PM

Muffin, there actually is some lesbian action. Play more.

I liked it, a lot. Borrowed it from a friend, went to town with job classes and monster smacking, enjoyed seeing the strange new costumes for the sheer cheese of it all. Each of the characters have certain classes they can play (out of the basic classes, not even talking about the special ones) where they seem more hilarious (Paine as a dancer....try it.) I have to agree about the battle system comment too. I loved that Battle System.
