Why didn't they just say that in the first place?

After everything that's been said about Firefox, it was this video, linked within these very words, that convinced me to switch.

"Ahh-WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Major Blood 04-19-2006 09:19 AM

That was fuggin awesome. What exactly was netscape trying to do?

BlackMageGirl! 04-19-2006 09:23 AM

I think Netscape was trying to "mock" the other ones. Or maybe it was just stupid.

Maybe both. XD

synkr0nized 04-19-2006 05:16 PM

Yes.
That totally has sold me on why Firefox is a better browser.
The anthropomorphized icons certainly bring about the quality and usability issues.

The_Bear 04-19-2006 05:44 PM

Yay, more fodder for a pointless war. Seriously, this is crap. I'm sick of people telling to to switch to Firefox. I hate it, I don't want it, leave me alone. Nobody should give a crap about what browser other people use, but apparently they do, and it's fricking retarded.

And another thing, people wouldn't have so many IE problems if they stopped being so damned stupid. I swear, most of the poeple I know either A.) Use IE or B.)Used IE, downloaded every god-damned thing on the internet, whined about how much IE sucks, then switched to Firefox.

Hey, some of us LIKE downloading every god-damned thing on the internet.

Absolute fuggin' truth! Every one of my friends demanded I switch to Firefox, so I tried it out. I ended up liking IE more because Firefox actually has a loading time. I click my IE icon and it's like BAM!

Also, amazing video. =D

Grandmaster_Skweeb 04-19-2006 06:30 PM

Funny how that works out Bob. Its exactly the other way around for me.

One reason why I prefer to have Firefox is because the tab system. I usually have fifteen to twenty tabs open at any given time. Firefox keeps my taskbar nice and uncluttered.

Another interesting thing is a friend of mine has cable internet and he used IE for a looong time. Sad thing is when I was using dialup at the time I jumped from page to page to page while his first one would still be loading. I asked him to try out firefox and he was able to surf the internet at the speed he should have been.

He has been a firefoxer ever since.

Same here.

A lot of people say firefox is slower, but that's because it has a few controls (that you can only access by typing in a certain web address which I can't remember off the top of my head) which other browsers don't. Sometimes it needs one of those settings changed, and then it's considerably faster.

Also, in response to Bear: I refused to switch from I.E. for a long time. That is until I decided to look up music lyrics one day. I wasn't downloading anything, was just curious about some lyrics. Well I didn't think to close the window and wandered away.

End result?

I ended up having to format my hard drive some months later when NOTHING could kill the adware and spyware that had infected it, switch over to linux for some time, and finally buy a new computer.

Firefox doesn't allow automatic downloads like I.E. does, so there's far less worry of something like that happening again.

I mean, keep using I.E. if you want to. Maybe it won't ever bite you in the ass. I used it for years and years and years without getting a single piece of spyware, adware, or a virus. Even without any protection programs, either.

However, someday it could really bite you in the ass. Even if you don't download every goddamn thing on the internet... which I didn't.

Mmm... security holes.

Mirai Gen 04-19-2006 06:40 PM

You know what's funny? There's apparently an official statement telling everyone about security holes that Firefox has.

Aproximately thirty seconds later, Firefox released an update.

"Fh-wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

Funny video. I love my Firefox.

Thundergod Cid 04-19-2006 07:19 PM

It's funny, krylo's story is almost exactly how I wound up switching to Firefox. My computer got assaulted by spyware from a lyrics site once too. It wasn't as extreme as having to format, but still pretty ridiculous.

In my opinion, IE isn't as bad as some people tell you, but Firefox is still better.

And, to keep this on topic, that video is hilarious. Especially IE.

CHICAGO¤lollie 04-19-2006 07:25 PM

One thing I've noticed about FireFox is that it doesn't handle FTP like IE does. Instead of working like a "My Computer" thing, it just gives a list of everything that's on there. Not handy. A couple of sites don't seem to work like they should, either.

Not a big loss though. I do a lot of program-switching anyway, it's just another couple to add to the switch-list.

You must be a fascinating individual. I'm wholly impressed by your personality now, and the GOBS of free time you must have laying around.

Esquire 04-19-2006 09:15 PM

My friend uses Firefox, and he loves it. All he has to do is load a site, find the required plug-in, download the plug-in to get the plug in, install them both, so he can open the page that says Firefox isn't supported.

I've yet to encounter a site apart from windows update that isn't supported in Firefox 1.5.

Slime 04-20-2006 05:59 AM

I've encountered some non firefox compatible pages, and I don't know why. Firefox is BIG now. A great number of people use it.

I used IE for years. Then I saw a link on a MUD I played. It was a link to firefox. Because I liked this MUD, I clicked the link and my life has been better ever since.

Yeah, the thing about IE is it's perfectly fine, right up until it isn't. And then you're fucked.

Nikose Tyris 04-20-2006 05:21 PM

I've been using the opera browser lately; It's actually not that bad. Firefox I just don't like, for no explainable reason. I'm on IE right now.
why am I the only one that thinks whale biologist was incredibly rude there?

What lyrics site? Letssingit is far too adware'ish-related, lyrics.com is terrible and is probably adware related, azlyrics... I don't go there often. All I ever need to use is darklyrics.com, decently low traffic. I mean, it isn't even finished. For stuff it doesn't have, it redirects you to azlyrics.

Low traffic lyrics sites = T3h awesome.

For the record, darklyrics is for metal, not all heavy stuff. If it says metal in your music program, then it should probably be there.

pochercoaster 04-20-2006 06:56 PM

I only frequent a couple forums and comics, so viruses and spyware have never really been a problem for me. I found the tabbing rather attractive, though. It's a pain in the ass to have a research period at school and sort through 50 IE windows.

Skyshot 04-20-2006 07:00 PM

Is anyone else reminded of this?

It was a redirect from azlyrics to a They Might Be Giants lyrics page, if memory serves.

This is because Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are essentially the same program. A web browser is not really meant to be an FTP access program, but this relationship allows IE some leverage.

Open "My Computer" or "My Documents" and replace the path of the folder with a URL.

This, among other things, is part of the motivation for Microsoft being sued.

Easy. Some html still isn't standardized. Some tags work differently in some brtowsers, some tags don't work at all. And some people don't see the need to do a diffcult cross-platform html coding, so they just use the most used web browser. Also, Firefox still doesn't support all the WC3 standards. Oops. Test it out for yourself.

Firefox may seem hugely popular, but it's still only used by about 10% of the internet. Especially now that IE 7 has tabbed browsing, and there are several overlay programs that will give IE 6 the same functionality.

I don't like Firefox. It's buggy (I've had the most recent versions randomly close on me when I load certain pages), it's got major memory leaks (these are not bugs, but rather deals with the way the pages are being cached in the tabbed enviroment), and, without tweaking, it's slow. Firefox is a product of hype, and it ain't as good as everyone is saying it is. Hell, Opera seems to hit a lot of the claims of Firefox better than Firefox does.

A lot of problems with IE disappear when you remove the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (which has been discontinued), which weas the gateway a lot of spyware used to lunch itself into your computer. I've lost my link to it's removal tool, I'll keep looking for it. Just be sure to replace it with Sun's Java.

MetalPsycho 04-21-2006 03:50 PM

I use Oprera, Firefox, AND IE. IE the least though, Firefox for alot of flash related programs and stuff I want in my cache, and Opera for everything else, especially downloading. Firefox downloading sucks. ;__;

Different browsers work differently for different computers. TRY THEM ALL! See which one you like the best.

Currient Browser: Opera.

Rezero 04-22-2006 12:39 AM

IE has worked for me. But I've got some top-of-the-line protection software, so maybe it kind of compensates? I don't like NS however. Grandmother has it, I tried it out and it sucks ass, at least from my perspective.

Dwarfburg citizen 04-26-2006 09:04 PM

I use firefox because its hell of a lot faster than I.E. I just get annoyed by the "you are missing a plugin" message I get a few times. ...just like the one I got by clicking on the link for the vid...:gonk:

UrbanSpaceman 04-27-2006 07:46 AM

I've got no strong preference either way. I use Firefox for most of my everyday web browsing as it's generally quicker the IE and I prefer using tabs to having multiple windows open all the time. However, I sometimes find the improved security of Firefox actually slows me down, and sometimes when I'm visiting various sites that I know and trust, I prefer to use IE and just let everything download automatically rather than manually authorise everything as I have to in Firefox. For this reason, I've got Internet Explorer set to the absolute minimum security settings, as I generally only use it for trusted sites, and Firefox on a much higher security setting for generalised browsing.

"EUUUGH LOOK AT ME. EUUUGH I'M BLUE AND PLAY THINGS. EUUUGH I ALSO INSTALL ITUNES ON YOUR COMPUTER. EUUUGH."

And, not that it's a major thing, but, y'know how on some sites, the scrollbar's colors have been changed to suit the site? Firefox doesn't let the bar change. It just stays with that stupid boring stupid gray of stupid. :(

...still. It's quick. And it supports that deviantART plug-in where you can change the deviantART skin and make it all pretty-looking! Gimmicky!

ZERO. 04-28-2006 03:42 PM

As for me I think il stick with IE, it has served me well over the years.

Plus now that I know it's “special” I need to keep an eye on it or it will burn my house down.
