Questions of legality on shutting down Chrono Ressurection

I'm sure you're all aware of the two-year old unfortunate news.

I've just been thinking about this alot. If I'm not mistaken, it was being done for non-profit, wasn't it? Does Square actually have legal grounding in "Cease and desist" on a fan-based non-profit game?

It might just be a sense of misplaced sentimentality, but still. I really am curious as to why they would shut down this project.

If by 'legal grounding' you mean 'highly paid attorneys' then yes, it is almost certain that Square has lots and lots of legal grounding. Which, unfortunately, is more or less what this sort of thing comes down to.

the way that copyright laws work (or at least how they were explained to me) is this: If a company does not defend its right of ownership at one point, and then attempts to defend it's right at a later date, it essentialy loses it's legal ability to defend itself and it's property.

as heineous as the shutting down of the Chrono project is, Disney is know for much more atrocious acts along the same lines.

The reasoning is along these lines: Chrono Trigger is still a viable game for them to remake/rerelease and make a profit off of. Having a fan-based, free version of their intellectual property cuts away at their ability to do that.

That's the idea, anyway.

Then they really need to do a remake or a sequel, and make it very, very good. it's the only way they'll gain my favour again.

I hate to sound evil, but one person's favor (or lack thereof) means little if there's no force to back it up...

Actually, I HEARD(That means it can be a stinky lie) that they were remaking it to the GBA or DS(Possibly DS since GBA was forgotten...) . And they mean Remakin and not porting like happened to FF IV.

Keep in mind the enormous fanbase behind Chrono Trigger. Just browse through the "What games to you come back to time and time again?" and count how many posts it took to become a Chrono Trigger based thread.

If Square does a remake, that's big money.

yeah, because Square is strapped for cash, and is having troubles squeazing money out of the Final Fantasy dead horse i mean series.

I'd be the first person in line for a Chrono Trigger release (and if someone got in line before me i'd shiv that fucker and take his spot) for the GBA. hell, i'd even buy a DS if thats what they released it for. but no, all they'll give us is the CT for the PS1, complete with load times and awkwardly placed cutscenes.

So all things considered, it doesn't look too good for Inverted Hearts then huh?
