Aaaand...your opinions on Runaways?

Yes, I mean the comic called Runaways. I got this little slice of the Marvel-verse (the first eighteen issues in one volume) from the library, and I rather liked it; but I also wanted to hear what all of you thought about it, if you've read it. So am I Teh Suxx0rs at comics because I liked this :p ? (Seriously, I know next to nothing about comics outside of ElfQuest, so I wouldn't be surprised.)

Again, anything you'd like to chip in about this series would be appreciated.

The first arc, the one where the Runaways defeat their parents. was OK, I haven't read much of later issues.

Absolutely fantastic in every respect. By turns hectic, hilarious, and heart-wrenchingly tragic, self-aware without being sarcastic about it and never stooping to condescend to its audience. The kind of comic book that makes me want to grab somebody who makes comic books and say There, you degenerate bile-spewing fucksack, that is how you make a goddamn comic book!

In fact I will say as an inveterate Comics Geek that the capacity for appreciation of Runaways largely makes up my test of one's worth as a human being, and you may rest assured SO that you have passed.

(Shishio - you're on thin ice. Shape up or ship out.)

((Sooooooo kidding!))

I think my bar-none favorite out of all of the ones I've read is the one where Princess Power - aka Molly - gets knocked into the LA basin during a fight and gets kidnapped by a would-be supervillain forcing orphans and, well, runaways, to do his malicious bidding.

So if I own every issue, where does that put me?

Yeah, when this came out and I saw that it was by the writer of Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina, I had to give it a try and I've been hooked ever since. As with his other titles, this book has loads of characterization, and the kids are constantly exploring different avenues in their relationships with each other. Also, there's not a ton of obligitory fighting of villians every issue.

So, in conclusion, you should buy this if you like comics.

With points deducted for being smug.

To be honest Ex Machina I couldn't get into that much.

I thought the political aspect rang a bit hollow, although I grant as my getting hung up over that is more my thing than any kind of general complaint.

Y: The Last Man was great, and then I just stopped caring.

This however cannot be disputed.

Out of Brian K Vaughan's titles, I like Y The Last Man the best. I think it's an excellent series. Ex Machina and Runaways are OK.

Sorry FifthFiend, I just can't show as much enthusiasm for the series as you do.

On another note, fans of Mr. Vaughan may be interested to know that he won a Shuster Award for "Outstanding International Comic Book Creator" last Saturday at the Paradise Comic Convention in Toronto. (He did not make an appearance, however, the artist for Runaways accepted the award on his behalf and he, (Vaughan) gave his acceptance speech over a cellphone.)

... But no, honestly I do acknowledge on some level that my love of Runaways is based in significant part on its correlation with my own personal preferences and prejudices, and as such someone might not be wholly blameworth for not responding to it with my level of enthusiasm.

Just, not on any level I'd ever admit to having.

I just finished reading the hardcover of the first 18 issues and I can honestly say this was the best Marvel I've read in a long time.

Copy and paste here. It was great, and it introduced me to the beautiful art of Jo Chen.

I checked it out from my little cousin(damn him and his monies) and I must say, Runaways is the single reason I could understand emo Music. Hell if I thought I'd get magic powers I'd cut off ym goddamned arm. Fianlly, I must buy these books. Now now now now. plus Sentinel.
