Tom Clancy XXX...

It's Microsoft/UbiSoft's fault for not registering for themselves the domain they planned on using in their game, however in a complex game these things can be overlooked somewhat easily. I don't take any heat off of the guy who actually registered the domain, however. I think its kind of a cheap attempt at making money.

Kuja 01-16-2004 09:07 AM

Yeah. But you gotta give the guy some credit for at least trying something funny. Haven't they made enough Tom Clancy videogames as is? And they've barely touched his Jack Ryan character so far, just think of the Rainbow Six-esque franchaise they could make out of that.

Gramcrackered 01-16-2004 01:04 PM

Tsh. So nice the way he's created a site of garbage solely for money via a good game. Makes you feel all warm inside.

*sniff* Why it almost restores your hope in the human race, dosen't it?

Yes, how dare they not assume that someone would take their site and make into a porn site. What is their deal?

That Ashcroft guy is a jackass.

That's not what I meant. First of all it wasn't THEIR site, which is how that guy was able to register it for himself. What I was saying was that if a company is going to use a URL within a vidoegame, movie, any other form of media where a lot of people will see it an perhaps visit that URL, that company should be sure to register it for themselves so people don't take advantage of them, no matter what kind of site they make. If some random person registered the URL as a site that sells video game merchandise or something along those lines, they would have free advertising from a very popular game, thus taking advantage of Microsoft/Ubisoft's mistake.

Ralvuimago 01-16-2004 04:09 PM

Despite that, I still hold up my comment that Ashcroft is a jackass.

Gramcrackered 01-16-2004 04:30 PM

I think it's the way Ashcroft so blatently uncaring and clear in his motives that makes it especially irritating. He wants money, anyway he can get it, pure and simple. Personally, what he's done crosses a moral line I wouldn't be willing to step over.

What VideoDrone is right about URL's - and phone numbers. Ever notice how movie numbers always start with 555, a number prefix reserved solely for such usage? Well, recently a director thought he'd be funny and put in his girlfriend's cell phone number.
To say that things have gone badly since is a bit of an understatement. Lawyers are discussing the matter even now.

I dunno. I think the guy's a genious. Not morally, but you can't think that way when trying to get what you really want...cash. I saw the first season of Survivor (then started hating reality shows) and I'd compare Ashcraft (not Ashcroft, lets not get them confused) to that gay guy who won. Sure he backstabbed and lied, but he won the million. He came into the game with that purpose and strategy and came through. I still hate the people who blast him for playing the game.

Youd probably do anything you could do to get money if you had been out of work for seven months(says he got laid off seven months ago, seems to imply that he has no job). I see nothing really wrong here, besides him using pornography(any other site and I would be fine). The idea behind him profiting from a company's mistake is a huge point in capitalism and I enjoy the idea of capitalism. Point is, Ubisoft can do nothing and all they can hope for is a settlement out of court because Ashcraft wont want to pay the legal fees. If it ever went to court, I doubt it would stand very well.
BTW, Ubisoft threw in a very powerful word, which I would like to clerify its meaning, so not to let them slide for their propaganda.

Blackmail: Extortion of money or something else of value from a person by the threat of exposing a criminal act or discreditable information

Ashcraft is not blackmailing him...hes already done what hes going to do. He says hell change the content of the site if they can give him a good reason(they most probably can not, as they would have to give a high statistic of younger people playing the games, which is possible, but would be a lot of hard work on their part) or he would sell it to them if they want. Ubisoft decided to take the easy way out and threaten him...which I think is pretty bad, but its still capitalism.
