The 2006 FiFa WorldCup -Germany- Thread
Considering the huge amount of nerds on the NP Forums, i was thinking about how many of you may actually like sports like soccer... and so, as there isnt any thread about it around...
- Soccer - The 2006 germany World Cup - Your country's Team Any thoughts? Likes? Dislikes? Hates? |
Up here in Scotland we didn't get into the World cup :( We have a pretty crap team... All the English think we should be supporting them as we are all part of Britain but to hell with that. Go Trinidad and Tibagoe(sp?)! Nothing wrong with the English team though, just the commentators. Every game, no matter who's playing, gets a mention of 1966. Some places bet on match outcomes but near me just as popular is how long till 1966 is mentioned (I think 12 seconds for the next one).
Aside from that slight rant, I think Brazil will do well (cos they always seem to) and I'd like Sweden to get quite far. Oh, and I'd like Trinidad and Tibagoe(sp?) to beat everyone and win :p , but that is really unlikely to happen |

Aaaanyway, I really believe that the US will at least make the second, if not third round this year. They aren't going to win, of course, but it might get people to like Soccer in the USA again. |
i saw 2 of those Friendly matches that took place last month, the one with Germany ended up with 7x0 to Germany (But then, they played Japan, and ended Up 2x2... Funny enoguh, Japan's coach is from Brazil) and the one with Brazil ended in 8x0 for Brazil... of course, those are all low profile games... but even so, it seens to be quite a Show to see until the Olympic games come by again...

I don't understand how Germany is not declaring war due to Budweiser being the "official" beer this time.
That's just not acceptable. I will be rooting for the U.S. team, of course, as I do every Cup, regardless of their chances. However, their division looks manageable this year. They didn't do too bad last time -- let's see them go further. However, I will continue to root for Germany, as well. I don't know; I latched onto them and Argentina for some reason many years ago. |
Football, goddammit, FOOTBALL!!
Ahem. All I have to say is if the Mexico team loses again at the second round, I will sincerely lose faith in all that is my country. That is, of course, until we win another SUB-17 world cup or I drink some horchata water from my ranch. Whichever comes first. ¡Viva México, cabrones! |
Fifa World Cup 2006
Who are your favorites to win and who do you think will win? And discuss the games you've seen or missed. whatever, this is the all purpose World Cup 2006 thread!
I think that it'll either be between Germany or Italy for winning the world cup. I do however hope that Poland wins, despite however poorly they did against Equador was it? It does seem to me like they were put in a decent group for them to advance onward from. Poland, Germany, Equador, and Costarica. Also, does anyone know where we can get a live feed of all(or most of) the games online from? I'm stuck with basic cable and ABC will only cover 12 of the games and the only other channel that airs them is in Spanish:whee:. |
Does language matter to watch soccer? It's not like the commentators add much to the overall ambience, but I guess my opinion doesn't count for much since I don't really follow the names of the players. Although the commentary I did pay attention to was a little...off ("T&T fans are some of the most persisent and loyal, coming from far away, blah blah..." *3 minutes later* "It's suprising to see T&T keeping this game scoreless, their fans were betting to see how many goals they would let in." Me = ?).
Anyways, best I could find on short notice was this blog that details the happenings in each game and has videos for the goals and such. How can you not have Brazil winning? It's freaking Brazil, they run soccer. I will admit that even though I have Brazil winning overall, the team I'm following is Trinidad & Tobago. For some reason, T&T is the Jamaican bobsledding team of the FIFA Cool Runnings, and I like cheering for the underdog. Plus the Swedish team looked like one player cloned with different haircuts. |
I want England to win, naturally. We dominated the first half of our first game, but the second half was poor, we still won though.
Game I'd most like to see in the world cup? America vs Iran! |
Threads merged, yo.

Also, with the fuss FIFA is making about, hell, just about anything related to the World Cup, I'm surprised they let anyone broadcast it at all. I think if someone streamed the games they'd kill him with satellites. Not to mention the bandwidth strain as half the world latches on. On a sidenote, only a few months ago I thought "surely there must be some product they can't advertise using football/soccer imagery." Boy was I ever wrong. They wrap lettuce in clear bags with a hexagon pattern here, and that's one of the normal examples. |
