That’s right, Genpets are not toys or robots. They are living, breathing genetic animals.

...I'm sorry, WHAT? Real pets? That thing? Talk about creepy. O_o

Ogianres 06-15-2006 09:43 PM

Oh. My. God.

I don't mean that in either a good way or a bad way. Just a big WTF?

I have to admit, I am curious. I also found some of the links on the site (links to scientific articles and such) to be also interesting. Maybe I'll comment further when I can recover from this weird surprise.

Fifthfiend 06-15-2006 09:44 PM

Oh man, they're like Furbies, but sexier!

CallmePrismatic 06-15-2006 09:54 PM

I'm pretty sure I've been leaving GenPets floating in my toilet for quite some time now.

Potty humor aside...god damn are those things creepy. It looks like they're in some sort of clear carbonite prison waiting to be released and pay back the misdeeds done to them ten fold.

MasterOfMagic 06-15-2006 09:55 PM

...You know those cats they disect in anatomy class? These things make me think of that. After they've peeled off the skin. So yess. SMEXY.

Oh yeah, I want one of these things to cuddle up to at night. So it can strangle me in my sleep

Loyal 06-15-2006 09:56 PM

I'm sorry, but this just... well, every time I saw a picture of the thing, my only thought was "That's just goddamn creepy..."

Ferchrissakes, we have cyborg pets now??

Something just seems so very wrong about this... Artificial life... And something about the way it looks makes me think it's going to eat me alive if let out of its cryostorage... *Fetal position*

Krylo 06-15-2006 09:58 PM

I think I'll get one to go with my bonsai kittens and pleasure lump.

Flarecobra 06-15-2006 10:00 PM

......I can see why Pillow Chicago is screaming in horror.

Ketsueki 06-15-2006 10:03 PM

Why does this disturb me so? I find it intriguing, but very disturbing. I mena, WTF? You can buy living things prepackaged in plastic on store shelves? Also, in that article about chimeras.

Bolded part for emphasis. Not a mad scientist? I'd say that yeah he is. Although, I must admit, I'm incredibly interested in chimeras. My morals and curiousity don't get along.

EDIT: Krylo, WTF's a pleasure lump? And I just hope this is a joke. Those things are really friggin' creepy.

Mondt 06-15-2006 10:07 PM

I scream every time I see it and cry myself to sleep. Simply thinking about it forces me to cringe, no matter my mood. Hearing it's name makes my ears bleed. Just reading this has made me go entirely numb. Forever shall I have a GenPet imprinted into my memory, laughing as I close my ears and eyes, hoping it will go away.

Mesden 06-15-2006 10:11 PM

You know this isn't real, right?

Krylo 06-15-2006 10:14 PM

Look it up. I'm pretty sure linking it or describing it would be against the terms and conditions of the NPF here.

Also, be prepared for disturbing and somewhat adult images.

I would've answered in an edit of my other post, but that would completely kill the mood of it and leave it less funny. Well, funny by my standards.

And yes. We aren't exactly cool enough to do this.

I think. :sweatdrop

Shishio 06-15-2006 10:18 PM

Reminds me of this:

Ketsueki 06-15-2006 10:28 PM

Oh, good. I thought those were too screwed up to be real. But still, it is very disturbing.

O.O

Creeepy. But it doesn't creep me out half as much as reading their ads about gene-splicing.

Bolded for emphasis. I mean, what the hell? I'm not afraid of spiders, but who in their right mind thinks we need giant spider-sheep roaming the land?! Good lord. Also:

Run, ohh dear god run before it eats you and craps out your soul!

CHICAGO¤lollie 06-15-2006 11:15 PM

A pox on your reading material! Do you really want to break this child's heart?

Aw, come now, it keeps the kids happy! And that's what counts, isn't it? Yes, that's right, it's all for the kids!

Mike McC 06-15-2006 11:15 PM

Not ninja'd. Merely disgraced. Suck it, skull boy.

mammothtank 06-15-2006 11:20 PM

Eww.

Part of the appeal of owning a pet is to have something warm and fuzzy to curl up in your lap on a cold day. I would not let one of those things within ten feet of me, much less on my lap. Geez, that's disturbing - it looks like a mini E.T. for chrissake! Gah.

I see you've seen Kerri's Big Invention. I think. That's a great quote...

Yeah, you ahve to scroll down.

Premmy 06-15-2006 11:45 PM

Damn, I was secretly hoping they were real, so I could buy a shit load and sneak them into peoples houses at night. I was'nt creeped out for more than a second, instead I just laughed for about ten minutes. Hell, I'm using a picture of on for my desktop. I'd like one of the boxes so I could hang it up in my house to creep annoying people out and make them leave.

Nikose Tyris 06-15-2006 11:53 PM

I half hoped they were real, and that we could custom order one. :/ I want a freakin' PIKACHU.

Also, No avail at finding "Pleasure Lump" anywhere on the internet so far. any advice where to check?

Damn you Krylo, for peaking my curiosity.

Krylo 06-16-2006 12:51 AM

Well it's because it's actually called 'Love Lump'. I misremembered before.

mauve 06-16-2006 02:18 AM

Genpets?? That is really, really disturbing...

Blech... I'd be afraid it would somehow turn out evil and kill me in my sleep. I'd rather have a pet kitten, thank you. A normal, non-GMO kitten. Something that won't try to devour my soul when I'm not looking...

Grandmaster_Skweeb 06-16-2006 02:24 AM

Anybody ever see the movie Max and Me?

Those things look almost like those aliens. Damn good for a hoax though!

gurusloth 06-16-2006 02:32 AM

I dunno, I wouldn't mind having a gene-modded pet. Just not that one.

Seriously, what if they could gene-mod a pet so that it made a certain noise 15 minutes before it peed or pooped? That would be great! Or maybe a gene-mod that makes the pet more easily trainable. Just brainstorming here, but I think there's lots of room for improvement. But I think that removing all the hair from your pet and making them all creepy looking is not really a direction that ought to be pursued, genetically speaking.

ZERO. 06-16-2006 03:05 AM

Oh.

oh, God.

I just found out what a love lump is...

So I figured, this is entirely on-topic and disturbing enough to post in this thread:
Quote:

CHICAGO¤lollie: There's one thing though that's got me feelin' sorry for the lil' critters.
The DarkOverord: what?
The DarkOverord: Little kids are gonna get 'em?
CHICAGO¤lollie: Nono, their lack of genitalia. :T
The DarkOverord: XD
The DarkOverord: yus
The DarkOverord: I think it's so they can't take over D:
CHICAGO¤lollie: Yeah but, I mean, wtf. How are the little guys supposed to have fun if they can't do the jiggy? :T
The DarkOverord: XD
The DarkOverord: aye
CHICAGO¤lollie: I DEMAND MORE GENPET JIGGY!

Azisien 06-16-2006 07:38 AM

Why does the animal rights activist in me cringe at this?

Really though, if they can make these things, why not sell them like normal pets instead of wrap them in plastic like a CD player?

Premmy 06-16-2006 08:09 AM

Actually the point of the art thingy was to show how horrible the mass marketing of living things is.to deter stuff like this fomr happening. It all starts with thoughts like this..

Besides, if a company di do this you know they'd make it cute and furry, which would scare me more. If you can make a rat glow you can make a cute gen-pet. those things look like every genetic abomination you've seen on sci-fi movies, the ones that say "Kill me" all the time. Supposedly when the display was set up they were rigged to breathe and a few were set up to twitch and claw. sounds horrible. Imagine going by KB toys and seeing one of those poor things clawing at it's case. I'd cry so hard. then laugh becasue it can't do the jiggy.

MasterOfMagic 06-16-2006 10:24 AM

In all honesty, I really shouldn't have fallen for this. I mean I saw "genepet restraints" as one of the features and gave a big '0.o', then forgot all about it.

Still...ugh.

Break his heart? It'll eat his heart!

Godamn, please tell me they are not cyborgs. Please... somebody... I don't want to have to avoid my Christmas tree because of the fear of finding that thing sitting there... staring at me with it's eyes closed.

Krylo 06-16-2006 01:27 PM

Well they were made with animatronics and microchips... so... CYBORG HO!

TheBlindMime 06-16-2006 01:43 PM

Man I really want to cut one of those things open to see how it works, though that might be considered animal cruelty if I they are indeed alive. Then again I wont really know its animal cruelty until I cut them open will I.....

Blast you genpets. How dare you place me in a catch 22 you freaky alien cyborg things.

Flarecobra 06-16-2006 05:19 PM

....WHY do I see those things as a new "Child's Play" movie rip-off?

*Wraps my tail around Rick's leg*

ZERO. 06-17-2006 01:13 AM

The only kind of bio modded animal I would even think of buying would be tiny mini tigers the size of cats.

Mike McC 06-17-2006 06:11 AM

So... You'd buy a tabby cat. Good for you!

TheSpacePope 06-17-2006 11:59 AM

I can't believe that none of you are seeing this! Are you jUst ignoring it.

Sweet zombie jesus

the horror

CHICAGO¤lollie 06-17-2006 06:13 PM

I say! That one is covered in minor injuries!

Don't worry, it's not like it's life threatening or anything. Poor li'l critter's probably just nearing its expiration date. http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/623/nod4gs.gif

dojindog 06-18-2006 10:57 PM

I think they're cute kinda like little baby koala's only y'know bald and without sex organs. Too bad it's fake and all.
