AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A 14-year-old girl who says she was sexually assaulted by another user of MySpace.com sued the social networking Web site Monday, claiming it does not take sufficient steps to protect underage members.

The suit, which seeks $30 million, also names News Corp., owner of MySpace.

The girl says a 19-year-old man lied in his profile about being a senior on a football team to gain her trust and phone number.

Pete Solis was arrested in May on a charge of sexual assault of a child. He could not immediately be reached Monday evening.

The suit alleges that MySpace has "absolutely no meaningful protections or security measures to protect underage users."

"(MySpace) has got to take this seriously," said attorney Carl Barry, who is representing the girl and her mother.

In a statement, MySpace said it is committed to the safety of its members.

"We take aggressive measures to protect our members," said Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer. "Ultimately, Internet safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage everyone on the Internet to engage in smart Web practices and have open family dialogue about how to apply offline lessons in the online world."
Can anyone here say "scapegoat"? Where the hell was this girls parents? I hope those idiots lose the lawsuit.

You might as well sue the city councils because there are streets and squares where you can meet people including ones with unsavoury interests. And what is it about football team seniors that you think you can give your phone number to them safely?

Um...Doesn't myspace not allow underage users? I remember my sister (13 at the time) complaining that myspace would not allow her to sign up because she was too young.

I think 13's right where they draw the line.

Scapegoat, indeed.

Another case of censorship as opposed to self-moderation and proper parenting.

The pedophile's been found! Quick, to the green minivan filled with candy! Pedo-Man away!

But, seriously, if he was 19, maybe he had just graduated? Hadn't changed his profile yet?

And wouldn't a 19 year old be just as wrong as a 17-18 year old? Damn double-standards.

$30 Million? What a load of bullcrap. I mean, I'm all for going after sexual assaulters...Where is the law going?

Nikose Tyris 06-20-2006 06:09 PM

...This happened in the states... my country has the legal age for sex at 14.

and, 19 and a 14 year old isn't that rare... If she WAS willing to meet him, and he had just graduated, maybe it isn't her that is suing, but maybe her parents instead...? It may all just be a get-rich-quick scheme the girl and this guy made up; it doesn't mention the guy being punished that I saw

[edit] or, it's right in plain site. there goes my theory. :P

and, let the fact I'm 18 and date girls 15-16 have NO say in my opinion on age here. :P

Hah.

That's all I have to say.

But really, as it's been said before, if you're stupid enough to believe anything you see from a person on the internet, you're not very smart.

Coming into this forum, or any forum, you shouldn't, by default, believe anything they say about themselves. I mean, it's a general rule for a lot of things.

Edit: Meant to say this earlier, but it was bound to happen eventually. Seriously, people sue for spilling coffee that was too hot or something on themselves. Didn't they win that, thought?

I agree. I have NEVER gotten an account on it, and never will. MySpace sucks. It annoys me when people talk about it. Ugh.
