Utah's Attorney General to Parents: Get Game Savvy

He basically says: "Parents, know what you're kids are playing and pay attention to the ERSB rating."

The link is here.

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board puts symbols and content descriptions on every video game cover. It's important for parents to become familiar with them so they know if its ok for kids to play.

The video game rating system is nothing new, but the push for Utah parents to pay attention to it is. North Salt Lake mom, Carolyn Gardner says, "You need to know what's in the game. We won't purchase any games that are rated M or A at all in our home. So we definitely count on those ratings being there."

With five young gamers at home, Gardner believes it's up to parents to be game savvy. Attorney General Mark Shurtleff agrees, "There's a lot of stuff that goes on in these video games, kids spend a lot of time playing video games, more than they're going to the movies, sometimes more than they're watching TV. So we ought to know what's in there."

And that's why father of five and Attorney General, Mark Shurtleff is launching a public service campaign. In it he comments, "So when you're choosing video games, use the ratings system. It works for my family and I know it will work for yours."

The ads will start running on radio and TV in the next few weeks. For more information on the video game rating system, go to: www.esrb.org.

A government official...advocating that parents pay attention to the ratings on the game instead of trying to ban them? What a unique concept! If only more people would go this route instead of the "Games bad! Must ban!" approach.

Holy shit, someone who's NOT Jack Thompson!

I hope this gets mimicked soon. I mean we've already got PA's Gabe and Tycho doing an ESRB ad run, and now we've got one in Utah. I really hope this pushes further.

Well, about damn time.

Really, most of us support this kind of thing.

There already has been people like this, in my own county here in California. I guess this guy is just getting the news for some other reason. We have commercials down here on TV for parents to focus on the ratings for both TV shows and games.

You know what's great?

When there is basically no comotion at all about video games.

I do not envy you on this, I rather feel sorry for you having to put up with the crap that you get on video games.

Though this would seem to be a step in to the right direction! Good thing.

Finally! Someone who doesn't wanna ban video games! I agree with him. Some of those M rated games are just gross. (and hey, he's from utah, so am I!)

I support this guy fully.

Hot dang, I was thinking I'd be in a heap of trouble for loving my Timesplitters, Halo, and Metal Gear Solid too much when I move to Utah for college, but if this guy is any indication, then looks like I'll be fine.

We should put Attourney General Mark Shurtleff against Senator Jack Thompson in a Celebrity Boxing match and let commen sense show the Jackinator who's boss.

FREEDOM!!!

Jack Thompson is a Senator now? Where the fuck have I been?

heh, Here in South Carolina we have commecials telling parents to start using the TV ratings system in place to keep an eye on what their kids are watching.

Hmm. The Oilers reaching the finals, now Government officials and parents telling others to get Game savvy.

I do believ these are the signs of the End of Days.

I'd call the US on being the "number one country in the world" if this was truth. I mean, god damn.

I had to write a 2500 word page on something of interest as a sort-of final for English 11 last year and did it on Video Games and their inffluence of children and such. My main object was Jack Thompson and what he should do instead.

He alienates (sp?) the very people that would be more than willing to help him. I for one, and as some stated earlier, others are acctually interested in better regulation of games. My sister was recently playing a game on the Gamecube that had near blatant sexual innuendos. She is 8 and doesn't need to be hearing that stuff.

What Utah's Attorney General is tring to do is a very good thing, and something that gamers everywhere shuold try to support, or forever be labled whatever the next crazy coot calls us.

I wrote a 15-page rant against video game censorship for english myself. My teacher was a bit surprised that a student was actually INTERESTED in their end-of-the-semester English 101 paper. There are days I think about going back and revising/expanding it, but there'd really be no point.

As for the rest, nothing much I can add except my stamp of approval. Very well said.
