Sony hints at PS3 game pricing.

Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has hinted at the company's software pricing strategy for the PS3, suggesting games could be more expensive than Xbox 360 titles.

In a recent interview with US consumer magazine PSM, Hirai was quizzed on the price point for Sony's next-gen software in comparison to the current retail cost of games on Microsoft's Xbox 360.

"Generally speaking, over the past twelve years or so, there has been a consumer expectation that disc based games are maybe US$ 59 on the high end to US$ 39 on the low end," Hirai stated.

"So, what I can say now is, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to think that we could suddenly turn around and say ‘PS3 games now US$ 99.99’."

Although there were no direct figures quoted, Hirai went on to say that Sony will be making its next-gen software "as affordable as possible," but suggested costs could rise from what consumers are currently paying.

"If it becomes a bit higher than US$ 59, don't ding me, but, again, I don't expect it to be US$ 100," he concluded.

Sony has already come under heavy fire for its pricing strategy on the PS3 console itself, which will retail for US$/Euro 499-599, with two SKUs available from launch.

UK consumers are getting a slightly rougher deal however, with the machine costing GBP 425 when it reaches stores, despite a direct Euro conversion coming in at the marginally lower price of around GBP 405.

There appears to be little correlation between US and UK software prices either, with Xbox 360 titles currently selling for between GBP 44.99-49.99 in the UK, which could mean a price point of around GBP 70 or more for games on Sony's console.

Of course, the software pricing is mere speculation at the moment, and is unlikely to be officially confirmed by the company until much closer to the anticipated November launch of the PlayStation 3.
Interesting. Not only is the PS3 system really expensive, but the games will be too! this will turn off alot of gamers and drive them to more cheaper options like the Wii.

Interesting. Does anybody else get a "We're-sticking-with-cartridges"-type vibe from this.

The PS3 could severely weaken Sony.

Looks like the 360 will be the power and the Wii will the the innovation, but the PS3 will be the price.

Hmmm US $60 or so, that's CDN $66 or so, and that's lower than they charged me for my copy of Half-Life 2 months after it was released. Actually, that's close to the going rate for a brand spanking new PC game, especially a real spiffy one. Don't see a big deal here, but then I've never been one to buy TONS of games anyway, I buy a select number of very good, reliable games and stick to 'em.

I want to wake up from this horrible, horrible nightmare and hear that this was all just a late April Fool's Day joke from my beloved Sony, who would, in all reality, never do anything so pathetically stupid as this.

The difference is, HL2 came with basically 3 games in 1 and it was a graphical engine that had downloadable extras avaliable in the future.

60-100 dollars for a single game on a disk = bad.

I think the guys at Sony have some kind of bet going how far they can go before Japanese kids will actually consider buying an Xbox.

SONY: Okay now memory cards will cost you twelve years of indentured servitute, but our new Dual Shock Four enhances the gaming experience by actually shocking you with several thousand volts of electricity at irregular intervals!

JAPANESE KID: It still plays Final Fantasy, right?

SONY: You bet your ass it does!

JAPANESE KID: ...Yeah, I'll take it.

SONY: Choke on that, J. Allard!

I think that maybe Nintendo silently bought out Sony and they're they're doing whatever they can to make the Wii seem like the physical manifestation of Jesus in console form by comparison.

Like I said elsewhere:

On the first day both systems are available, [Sony fanatic] will weep uncontrollably as he shuffles in shame to his car bearing a seven hundred dollar debt, a PS3 and one game, while I shall skip merrily home with a Wii and 6 or 7 games for the same amount.
