Your favorite videogame soundtracks?
I got to wondering; what are your favorite videogame soundtracks? And when I ask for favorites, I don't mean, "hmm, [game title here] had a couple of nice tracks." By favorite, I mean as in, "Wow, [game title here]'s soundtrack is so awesome, I gotta buy the official soundtrack CD!"
I'll start off with my list. These are in no particular order: Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Tales of Phantasia, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Warcraft 2, Jet Set Radio Future, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Full Throttle. Frankly, I find the music from these games to be a lot better than most of the music being currently sold on store shelves. What do you think? Show me your lists! EDIT: It doesn't matter if the soundtrack in question is original, licensed, or a combination of both. |
I wholeheartedly believe that nothing will ever top Mega Man 2's soundtrack.
But FFVI's world map music comes pretty darn close. |
Xenogears music when you're in the Yggdrasil III. Hands Down.

Anything Yasunori Mitsuda tops out my list. Starting with Chrono Cross (shame such a mediocre game got the best damn soundtrack ever made), and I really digged Xenogears' music too.
I also like Metal Gear Solid 3's theme music, and Kingdom Hearts II's soundtrack had a few sweet tidbits. Also, since you didn't specify original music as a necessity in judging gaming soundtracks, I gotta include the Grand Theft Autos. Even if you weren't a huge fan of the gameplay or storylines (and I honestly wasn't,) I could spend hours on end just listening to any GTA's radio. Espesically the talk shows. Even the PS1 ones had phenomenal radio tracks if I remember correctly. |
Do I even need to say it?

This forum has just lose some awesomeness to me. How could you possibly ignore THIS soundtrack? I must admit that it belong to (arguably) one of the few (read, lots of) titles that to not deserve to be called FF at all. But if you have heard it, you can't even deny it sheer awesomeness. Kumi Tanioka is just... arrgh!

Actually, Ecco 2: Tides of Time was the game that really got me into video game music. And that was back on the Genesis, where video game music was just beeps and boops. You kids with yer fancy orchestral scores nowadays.

First I am happy to say that I have now escaped the oh-so thirteen posts I have made to the oh-so safe fourteen posts.
Getting back on track, I liked the AW: DS songs. For some crazy reason, I can't stop jammin' with Sensei's and Hawke's themes and the Black Hole Super CO Power song and the Black Tag Power song and the... |
Wild Arms. Quite possibly my favorite game soundtrack ever. Also the only one I've bought so far.
