Annoying Argument Sayings

This is a forum where people debate and argue until they're blue in the face. For me, there is the occasional argument that really REALLY bothers me.

For example: "You're just refuse to admit you're wrong!"

I mean, what the hell??? The whole point of a debate or argument is because two people are refusing to admit they're wrong. This argument is only valid in the very rare cirumstance the receiver has absolutely NO reason to believe what they believe. Otherwise, the person saying this statement is just as guilty of it. The even more annoying part of this is when one replies "No I don't" and the first person says "You see? You just proved my point!". Whether the receiver of this statement agrees or disagrees, the point is proven. It's an unfalsifiable statement, therefore not a proper argument.

The other variation of this: "You always think you're right!"

Duh. If anybody ever thought they were wrong, they'd probably change their view. The fact is in an argument EVERYBODY thinks they're right except for the occasional person who argues for the sake of arguing even though he might actually agree with the other view. In which case he can't use this anyway. The "No I don't" and "You just proved my point" scenario also fits here.

Another one is "You just have to prove people wrong don't you?"

This fits pretty well with the first two. In an argument or a debate, particularly when one's character is being attacked or one's major belief is being threatened, everybody feels a need to defend themselves or their positions. You may be seeing a pattern here, as no matter your response the person who says this will claim their point has been proven.

You may wonder what has started my thoughts on this. Well, I did have a debate with my ex-girlfriend of 6 years ago (yes 6) earlier today about how self-absorbed I was. The thing is, she hasn't seen me in 6 years and we only chat on msn once every couple of months or so. So after pointing out the fact that she doesn't know me that well anymore, I received all of these statements and variations thereof.

Of course she would use this thread to prove that I actually was self-absorbed instead of going to the fact that I might simply be frustrated with her inability to realize that I'm not 14 years old anymore.

You also might be asking why I still talk to her. Well her sister is marrying my brother and she's the MoH and I'm the BM (best man, not black mage). So unfortunately, I'll be seeing her real soon.

Anybody else have people that argue with them in ways they hate?

I pretty much don't like the way people talk in the discussion forum anymore, which is why I don;t post here as often as I used to. Whether it is someone saying something that is glaringly offensive or rude, or SOMEONE being overly rule concious, it is definitely hard to post here anymore. I'd say God Damn, but I am sure someone would jump over my case for mentioning religion. Really I don't have any problems with the way people post here, unless you disagree with them, then they are off to say that you are breaking rules, or just generaqlly being an ass.

So this is a message to the discussion forum. Lighten up, cause we are arguing on the internet. Remember that the next time you try and get high and mighty.
KTHNXBYE.

Meh. I basically start getting a sore head whenever I see blantant fallacies from total idiots that everyone can recognise. I don't mind so much when someone just seems to have the wrong end of the stick and misargues reasonably and coherently. But then the worst part is when someone who knows how to debate very well deliberately dances around their point using their ability to 'appear' right very effecitvely. (Mostly because that way sometimes loads of people are misled, and the whole general spread of ignorance hurts meh =( )

As for a debating pet peeve: The worst thing someone can ever ever do, for me, is say "In my opinion" as part of an argument. Or as justification. "Oh yeah? Well it's my opinion! Everyone can have their own opinion!".

People seem to fail desperately to grasp that an opinion in an argument should be based on fact, evidence... that sorta solid grounding we always use in debates, and that opinions are not self justified.

As opposed to the situation where 'IMO' actually works, which is something like "I like cheese" and other personal stuff that's purely in the realm of personal taste.

Eh...

Personally, I despise when people use the word "Irregardless" during debates.

It's a word often used for the sole purpose of sounding intelligent, or atleast that's my view on it. It kinda makes me laugh, knowing the user generally doesn't know it features the negative prefix "Ir-" and the negative suffix "-less" (Redundancy!).

Doesn't that create a double-negative, as well?

I'll let the irritators speak for me.

Good call.

I hate it when people say "There's no way for us to know," or "reason does not apply to God," or anything along those lines. Bullshit, says I.

I stop talking to people when we're having a difference of opinion and they use these words/phrases:

'You don't understand'
'Always'
'Never' (Especially 'you never [ " ]')
'Listen to me'
'whatever'
'like that matters'
And many others

And pretty much whenever cussing gets involved.

But the biggest thing that just turns me off of any 'argument' or even small friendly debate is when they turn talking about a subject into talking about you personally. 'Well, you're just obsessed with that kind of thing so of course you take that side'. Instant lose right there. I don't need to deal with talking to someone turning the convo about me and they pretty much just proved they're starting to see the flaws in their argument and need to change to making me mad or focus the negative on me to cover it up.

Its become normal for me now to just stop talking when these situations come up instead of proving my point or telling them to F*** off. Its also a lot easier for me and a lot harder for them. -_-

Skyshot, you are now officially one of my heroes. This attitude does happen in these forums from time to time, and this same attitude happens far too often in the real world as well. I'm sick and tired of it.

Also, here's my least favorite argument saying, "What? You think you're better than me?" even though I never said nor implied any form of superiority in my argument. People who use groundlesss excuses like that one in a debate immediately lose any and all respect I may have had for them.

Hypocrisy is the thing which annoys me most in discussion.

Speaking of which, I can literally TASTE it in this thread... so I'm just going to be someplace else.

I can agree to this to the utmost degree. When someone can't admit they're wrong, but they clearly are, it's always, "Whatever."

It's real convenient when suddenly things don't matter for the person who's losing.

I had the same amusing thought on my mind. However, we're all victims of logical fallacies from time to time. I mean, using them is a damn good way to avoid using them again, right?

So I'm quite happy with this thread.
