Original Concepts?! Impossible!!
I've been always a little sick about how people always complaint about how everything was already done before in games... and also about how everything was already done before in games...
SO... is there anything NEW to be tried? Really.. is there? What are your new concepts of gameplay that you think it can be done with the current next-gen power? A New quest system for RPG's? A New element for FPS? Just what would you say that its possible, interesting and never done before in games!? |
A fully motion-sensing controller!
...sorry, had to be said :p Personally, I'd like to see what fifthfiend said in the "Dream Game" thread; a game where the antagonist actually acts independantly from you. A game where you could actually lose while you're fucking around getting strong shit to fight the boss with, wrapping up sidequests and all that. I'm looking at you, Tales of Symphonia! EDIT: When the fuck did fifthfiend become a mod? I just noticed that today. |
complete independence from the game mechanics. If I want to climb over a wall and drown in a lake of fire, I should be allowed.

realism in FPS? Shoot a guy in the arm, his aim will be severly lower and shooting will be slowed and lazy and such. Shoot a guy in the leg, he starts limping/falls down. same goes for you if you get shot anywhere.
as for RPG's, hows about letting us visit the entire world from the start? And not have it revealed to us through the storyline as that part becomes important. Lets start off as the guy with the airship. Lets be able to fight lvl 70 monsters when we're level 5 within the first hour of gameplay. |

I think that if made right, a game that you only did planning-like stuff for would be cool. Mainly for thinkers. Liek one of my friends suggested a game where you plan terrorist stuff for any country against any country. You start out small and end with large-scale attacks. Each thing you do has a consequence that could easily screw you over, but you wouldn't know it when it happened. Can you say aggravating? As long as it would somehow addicting, then it would work. The concept behind the idea, not the idea. |

Im not a big fan of games where you get to be the Bad Guy... or the good guy who is bad or the badass good guy... y'know? This is just getting lame over the years... I would really like to see a game that REALLY shapes itself depending on yoru actions... a really depp game system that rewards and penalize good and evil during its course... not just some lame text-based choices, or NPC killing that only falls on 1/10 on the story development... Also... games with alternate paths and multiple endings should exist more |
As for alternate endings and multiple paths, it should be for things that aren't just dialogue options. For example in Tales of Symphonia, if you end up winning the fight against Kratos the storyline could branch off into something completely different. And it would be awesome if you could prevent NPC story deaths. Imagine how rewarding it would be to be able to save a guy that you had to watch die in the last playthrough.
Also, I'm tired of the "one main hero" in RPGs. I want to be able to play FFX as Auron or play Tales of Symphonia as Zelos. Something where the story changes depending on who your frontguy is. |
What I want to see in RPGs is an AI that uses a non Chaos theory strategy- i.e. does not pick moves at random/in a set order. I want an enemy that does the same thing I do: targets the weakest and most dangerous enemies first, makes use of elemental foils, changes weapons or uses items when necessary, reacts to defensive spells with cancelling offensive spells and vice versa, and so forth and so on.
If I remembered any Java, I could probably write up such an AI. Maybe that'll be my project for next summer. |
I want to play as the goddam villain. And win.
|
The problem with making the villain the leader, is, well, he's the villain.
I mean, it's his job to sit and drink imported beverages (Alcohol or coffee or tea, take your pick) and have his lackeys do his work for him. All of those lackeys are conveniently subsequently stronger as they get closer and closer to head hancho, and he stops drinking his alcoholic tea-coffee long enough to taunt you and challenge you to a fight, where you promptly kick the shit out of him. I'm really not trying to burst your bubble, but there's a reason for this site. The cliches must go on, otherwise the game wouldn't work. Not that I'm opposed to playing the villain - it worked pretty well in Goldeneye, but even then you weren't the coffee-drinker. You were his right-hand man. I'm all for villainy triumphing the heroes occasionally, really, I am. It'd just be hard to do, and not many writers want to work that hard on their game's story. Anyway. I don't think that it's possible to say that every original concept has been done. That's what everyone said at the second-era Next Gen (PS2, Xbox, GCN)'s release, since then we were getting outstanding FPS games, good RPGs, solid action games, and the like. But, come on. Katamari Damacy? Shadow of the Colossus? Black and White? Viewtiful Joe? Hell, I'd even go as far as to say Guilty Gear XX, a game where they quite frankly said, "Fuck you, Namco, and your stupid 3D." So, no. I don't think that sequels and generic games have steamrolled Ingenuity's mom at their birthday party. I just think that companies who are doing something extremely well and making profits off of it are very leery to actually delve into the new and unexplored. And that's mostly because the Virtual Boy was a very good discipline towards unique ideas being shut down in thought-process form. |
