Aquaman gets a TV show?

I'm currently downloading the pilot for 'Aquaman', a Smallville-esque attempt by the creators of... eh... 'Smallville'. Not surprisingly, it appears to follow the '1 part special effects, 2 parts attractive young actors' methodology that made Smallville, Charmed, and 7th Heaven hit TV shows with the hip-13 year olds... Ok, except for 7th Heaven. Which sucks...

Moving on.

So, I'm skeptical. I mean, initially, Smallville was a great re-interpretation of the Superboy stories... But the way things have been going the last 2 seasons... What could Aquaman possibly bring to us that could be something other than an excuse to have your key charecters in bikinis more often?

Who would be his vilians? Who would be his love interest? Would he talk to Dolphins? Would he die without being submerged in water periodically?

Would anyone care? It is this question that bothers me the most.

You see, everyone knows Superman. You screw up Superman too much, people notice. So, generally, his mythos doesn't get spat and urinated on so terribly... But Aquaman? Who cares about his powers, where he came from etc? What reason does the creative team behind Smallville, esspecially considering what they've done to the most well-recognized mythological charecter this side of the 19th centuary, have to stay true to or , more importantly, respect Aquaman's origins?

Anyway, oh look at that, downloads done. I'll let you all know how it is.

:O_o: A tad off-topic, but what? I always got made fun of for watching that.

But I'd agree on just about everything you said on the show. I didn't even like him in that show when I was little.

Wait.. who is what show?

Anyways, I just mention Charmed becuase it sort of fits the motif of these kinds of shows.

I've watched about 3/4 of the episode so far.

As predicted, mucho bikinis.

The basic story is this - A.C. is a hip 20-something beach bum who's super good at swimming, and he empathizes with aqautic life to the degree of making a point to free dolphins from a theme park. Make no mistake - when I say 'super' as if it is an indication of extrodinary, demi-god-like ability, I do mean just that. A.C. splashes around at some 500+ mph, apparently. But apart from the fact that he does this fairly publicly, no one seems to think much of him. (They expect me to beilive that Mr. surfer-boy never said 'hey, check me out swimming at mach 5 underwater biotch! hell ya!' )

Lou Diamond Philllips is totally his adoptive father, which is pretty cool. 'Aquaman' pulls in some pretty big Hollywood names, which is either a bad thing or a good thing...

Eh, I'll go more into it later. Anyone else checked it out?

I meant some cartoon Aquaman was in. Probably some cartoon about a team, and not just him. But I didn't like him.

At first the idea really scared me when it was announced as Mercy Reef and then the idea got dropped with only the pilot being made...
I mean its frekken Aquaman!
No one really likes him...
How could anyone make a good show starring the Ma-ti of the Justice League?
Now that they released the pilot to the public and after watching it I must say I really would of liked to see where they planned on taking the show...

And on a sidenote, when the show was first announced a band I know was trying to get their Aquaman song to the WB executives to make it the theme of the show.... and it sums up Aquaman pretty nicely...
Sadly they use myspace for that song instead of their actual site...
Check it out...

Oh, and if anyone deserved their own TV Show, it would totally be Green Lantern..

Yeah but I think GL missed the oppurtunity back in the mid-90s when Superhero shows in primetime could be more adult and less bikini-teenagers. Becuase, hey, no GL I ever heard of was a 'Teen Latern'.

Sounds to me like someone's been watching Entourage and didn't get the joke. But just as well, I mean, I'm not even sure the people who make Entourage entirely get the joke.

In any event, a good version of TV-Aquaman would read like The Little Mermaid - X-TREEEEME!!, so it's not like a shitty version's bound to be much worse. That's the whole thing about fucking up Aquaman, is honestly, who's gonna know the difference?

To paraphrase the great Homer:

I am intrigued by your words and would like to learn more. Do you have a pamphelt of some sort? Or perhaps a link to a web-like site where one might download this "Aquaman pilot" you speak of?

I am two steps away from ripping my hair out. How cruel, to have a post that took me the better part of 30 minutes vanish into the depths of the internet, becuase I forgot to click the 'remember me' button as I logged in.

So much swearing being screamed on the other side of the monitor. SO much.

Sort version;

Never seen entourage, but the 'Aquamom' episode seemed to be what fifth was referring to. Illumination please?

Also; I have no desire to see Superhero stories turn into 'rich white kids with super-powers' stories, ala the influence of 'Laguna Beach' and 'The O.C.'

As for getting the pilot of Aquaman, iTunes has it for $1.99, which is a pretty good deal considering a 5 mintue music video costs the same.

Aquaman was better as a character on the Justice League cartoons... but hell... i think that any tv show that took in THOSE characters would be good... so dont mind my ranting
