'As-Read' status not working?

So there was this in the I-hate-such-and-such thread:

I've actually been noticing the same thing, lately. Along with the opposite, of threads showing up bolded long after I've read them and without anything new in them.

Any of the admins know what's up with this? Anyone else noticed it happening?

It happens to me on occasion but I usually know whether or not someone has made a new reply to a thread. I assumed that it was a problem on my end (maybe having to do with cookies), but I guess that isn't the case.

It happens a lot when I close the window, after reading subscribed threads, coming back, and subscribed threads being bolded like there is something new, when, in fact, there is not. It's been happening since... January, I think. No precise date, but it's been happening for a while to me. Maybe a Forum upgrade to the software that is wonky?

I've only experienced the second part, about threads showing up bold after I just read them.

Fenris 08-13-2006 09:07 PM

Well, for me, I read the thread, but the forum won't go inactive until after I go into the forum and back to the main page. In other words, if I hit the big 8-BIT THEATER thing after reading a thread, the forum will show up as active.

Yeah I've had similar problems, it stays marked as unread even after I've read it, and it does this a lot, haven't noticed the reverse though.

Mesden 08-14-2006 01:30 AM

Actually, I know the problem.

Say, in General forum, there's one thread you actually haven't 'read'. When you go to read it, you exit out with Main Category or Nuklear Power Forums, instead of General.

If you don't go back to the general thread, it remains unread.

So:

You go to read "Random crap about something"

Then you leave the thread using the Main Category tab.

It'll stay marked as unread on for you, as you never reset the General forum from your side by revisiting it.

So, to solve the problem, you'd just go to whichever forum you're in(Example: Off Topic, General), and then go to Main Category/Nuklear Power Forum and it should be marked as read.

That's what's worked for me.

Also, there's a "Mark Forums Read" tab at Nuklear Power Forum Index which just solves that.

True, but you didn't used to have to do that, you just exit directly from the thread to Main Category and you'd be fine, so something's changed.

Nope, I just tried it for myself. I read your message, clicked Main category, and this forum was marked unread. I clicked on the forum, then back to Main category (Without looking at this thread) and it came up as unread.

So, as far as I can tell, everything I stated still holds true.

Well, for me, you're wrong.

I click the thread, click the Forum related stuff forum, click the Nuklear Power Forums, and it reads read.

The threads show up as read after the first viewing. The forum, however doesn't recognize when you've viewed all the threads in the forum until you go into said forum, and back out.
